05/07/2022 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) kicked off its 67th season when the league hosted Week 1 of play on April 28. Nine matches took place at the First Congregational Church in Deep River.
The Marlins started off their season get getting a 6-0 sweep against the Braves. Clinton resident Mark Goodale of the Marlins led all scorers with a 143 series to go along with 35 ringers and 7 doubles in the victory.
The Dodgers defeated the Reds by the final score of 4.5-1.5. Chester resident Andy Perna of the Dodgers was the third-leading scorer on the night with a 127 series. He also had the high game for the night with a 43.
The Pirates came away with a 4-2 victory versus the Red Sox. Higganum resident Paul Stevens of the Pirates finished with the highest score in the C Division with a 101 series. Deep River resident Cody Layton of the Red Sox was the top scorer in the B Division with a 107 series.
Behind Goodale's score of 143, Haddam resident Mike Zanelli, Sr., totaled the second-best score in the A Division with a 139 series. Perna was next with his 127.
In the B Division, Layton (107) was followed by Killingworth resident Todd Nuhn in second (93) and Cromwell resident Damin Roberts (85) in third. For the C Division, Stevens (101) was followed by Deep River resident Dave Atkinson in second (74) and Guilford resident Bill Black in third (69).
The Marlins are in first place in the standings with a 6-0 record after the first week of league play. The Dodgers and Orioles are tied for second with their records of 4.5-1.5, while the Tigers, Pirates, and Cardinals are next in line at 4-2. The Yankees, Rangers, Cubs, Padres, White Sox, and Giants are all 3-3. The Angels, Red Sox, and Royals are 2-4; the Reds and Mets are both 1.5-4.5; and the Braves are 0-6.
