The Westbrook girls’ tennis team netted shutouts in both of last week’s matchups and is now sporting a record of 8-1 this season. The Knights defeated Old Saybrook and North Branford in shutout fashion last week and have now won seven matches in a row.
Westbrook began its week by recording a 7-0 victory over Old Saybrook in a home match on April 25. Senior Julia Farnoli won her No. 1 singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 score for Westbrook. The Knights also received singles victories from senior Gianni Salisbury (6-2, 6-1), freshman Megan Bache (6-0, 6-1), and junior Caroline Dias (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 2 through 4 singles spots, respectively.
Westbrook’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt prevailed by a 6-0, 6-1 score. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win; and the No. 3 team of senior Xan Zanzalari and junior Adriana Stranieri also won their match by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Then on April 27, the Knights hosted North Branford and blanked the T-Birds by a 7-0 final. Farnoli (6-0, 6-0), Salisbury (6-0, 6-2), and Bache (6-2, 6-0) were victorious at the top three singles spots for Westbrook. Junior Ava Ciarcia posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match. The Knights’ doubles duos of Koplas-Belcourt (6-0, 6-1); Sacco-Palumbo (6-0, 6-0), and Zanzalari-Stranieri (6-0, 6-0) were all straight-sets victors for Head Coach Paula Fitzgerald’s squad.
Boys’ Tennis
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team improved to 6-1 by winning its lone matchup on the schedule last week. On April 25, the Knights played a road match versus Old Saybrook and posted a 4-1 victory over the Rams.
Softball
The Westbrook-Portland (W-P) co-op softball team moved to 1-11 on the year after losing three road games last week.
On April 25, the Knights took a 21-0 loss at North Branford. Two days later, W-P had a road matchup against Old Saybrook and lost to the Rams by a 24-12 score. Then on April 29, the Knights were back on the road to face Coginchaug and took an 18-0 defeat to the Blue Devils.
Baseball
The Westbrook baseball team took three defeats last week to move to 0-11 on the season.
Westbrook took a 19-4 home loss against Old Saybrook on April 27. Senior Sam Freeman ht a double for the Knights in the contest.
Then on April 29, the Knights played a road game versus Coginchaug and lost to the Blue Devils by the score of 11-1. The next day, Westbrook hosted Portland and took a 12-1 loss to the Highlanders.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team participated in its first big invitational meet since 2019 when the Knights competed in a competition at Ellington High School on April 30. The team finished in 14th place at the meet.
Sophomore Hannah Freund took first place in the long jump with a personal-record distance of 14 feet-10 inches for Westbrook. She also finished sixth in the pole vault with a state-qualifying height of 7-6. Sophomore Leticia Pires took fifth place in the triple jump (30-1.5) on behalf of the Knights.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook boys’ outdoor track squad came in 15th place when it took part in an invitational meet at Ellington High School on April 30.
Westbrook’s 4x100 relay of junior Vinny Naccarato, junior John Grace, junior James Grace, and junior Brandon Naccarato finished in first place with a time of 45.75. Brandon Naccarato also finished fourth in the long jump with a personal-record, state-qualifying mark of 19-2.
Senior Brett Metcalfe placed fourth in the high jump (6-0) for the Knights. Junior Hevar Gomez finished seventh in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best mark of 45.92.
