The Old Saybrook baseball team hit the field to play three games last week and came away with two wins to put its record at 8-3 on the season. The Rams took a defeat against Haddam-Killingworth before bouncing back with victories over Westbrook and Old Lyme.
On April 25, Old Saybrook took a 4-1 loss to H-K in a road game. Senior Jake Butler pitched a complete game for the Rams, allowing just 1 earned run in 6 innings pitched. Sophomore Auggie Albert had 2 hits, while senior Noah Hester and sophomore Connor Lane each hit a double.
Old Saybrook bounced back by claiming a 19-4, 5-inning victory at Westbrook on April 27. Senior Carson Brown pitched 3 scoreless innings for the Rams, allowing no hits. Junior Marlin Stavola threw the last 2 innings in relief.
Hester went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and 4 RBI for Old Saybrook. Brown was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, 2 runs, and 3 RBI. Albert went 1-for-1 with a walk, a triple, 2 runs, and 2 RBI; while Butler was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, a double, 2 runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Sophomore Ed Devaney went 1-for-1 with a walk, 3 runs scored, and an RBI; and Stavola went 1-for-1 with 2 walks, 2 runs, and an RBI.
The Rams closed out their week by claimed a 4-3 victory versus Old Lyme at home on April 29. Noah Grace picked up the win after pitching 5.2 innings for Old Saybrook, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. Butler pitched the final 1.1 innings to get the save.
Hester went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, 2 RBI, and a stolen base in the win. Albert was 1-for-2 with a walk, a triple, and a run scored. Grace went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Butler was 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, and Brown had a walk with a run scored and a stolen base.
Softball
The Old Saybrook softball team earned its first victory of the year when the Rams defeated Westbrook-Portland in a high-scoring game on April 27. The Rams also took a loss to Haddam-Killingworth and have an overall record of 1-6 on the year.
Old Saybrook took a 21-0 defeat against H-K in a home game on April 25. Two days later, the Rams hosted the Westbrook-Portland co-op squad and won the game by a 24-12 score in 5 innings to pick up their first victory this season.
Senior captain Cassie Johnson went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, 4 runs scored, and 4 RBI for Old Saybrook. Johnson also earned the win on the mound after coming in from shortstop to pitch in relief for the Rams. Senior Sophia Barker, senior Mackenna Cooke, and senior Ella Hagelston each had 2 hits to help Old Saybrook get the victory.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team picked up two wins when it swept a tri-meet at Valley Regional High School last week. The Rams claimed a 105.5-44.5 victory versus Valley Regional and defeated Portland by the score of 92-57 to get the sweep on April 27.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Old Saybrook boys’ outdoor track squad competed against Portland and Valley Regional at a tri-meet in Deep River on April 27. The Rams came away with a split by earning a 92-45 win over host Valley Regional to go with a 105-43 defeat versus Portland at the meet.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team played two road games last week and split the set to put the Rams’ record at 8-1 this season.
Old Saybrook took its first loss of the year when the Rams dropped a 13-11 decision at Valley Regional on April 26. Senior Lily Cody scored 5 goals and had 2 assists in the contest. Junior Chelsea Heinke scored 3 goals, and freshman Gretchen Kawecki netted 2 goals. Senior Grace Adams scored a goal, while senior Sophia Gormley and sophomore Amelia Sigersmith each had an assist for Old Saybrook. Senior goalie Samantha Wakelee made a career-best total of 22 saves in net.
Then on April 28, the Rams played a road game versus North Branford and rallied for an 11-10 victory versus the Thunderbirds. Old Saybrook trailed North Branford 9-4 in the second half, but stormed back for six-straight goals to take a 10-9 lead. With the score tied 10-10, Cody netted the game-winning goal with 11 seconds on the clock to give the Rams the advantage for good.
Kawecki scored 6 goals, and Cody had 4 goals for Old Saybrook. Adams had 1 goal with 1 assist, and Heinke also had an assist. Wakelee made 9 saves in net for the Rams, who were bolstered by an exceptional defensive effort from senior Lilly Sigersmith.
Boys’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team won one of its three home matches last week and is now 2-6 on the season.
On April 25, Old Saybrook took a 4-1 home loss to Westbrook. The Rams’ No. 2 doubles team of senior Joe Maselli and senior Zach Nichols earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the match.
Then on April 27, the Rams hosted Cromwell and lost to the Panthers by a 4-2 score. Old Saybrook’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Mike Kapij and junior Jack Forrestt claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win. Maselli and Nichols won their No. 2 doubles match by the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Two days later, the Rams posted a 5-0 victory versus Coginchaug in another match at Old Saybrook High School. Senior Logan Medbury earned a 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for Old Saybrook. Senior Victor Fuda netted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 2 singles; sophomore Daniel Steindl gutted out a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles; and Nichols won his match by a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 4 singles. Kapij and Forrestt won a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the No. 1 doubles match.
Girls’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis moved to 3-5 this year after losing two recent matchups.
The Rams took a 7-0 defeat against Westbrook in a road match on April 25. Three days later, the Rams played a home match versus Cromwell and lost by a 6-1 score at Old Saybrook High School.
Boys’ Golf
The Old Saybrook boys’ golf team hosted Morgan for its lone matchup of the week last week. The Rams took a 172-188 loss against the Huskies at Fenwick Golf Course to move to 2-2-1 on the year.
Sophomore Drew Kulman recorded Old Saybrook’s low score by posting a 42 at the meet. Sophomore Connor Cassella scored a 45, junior Adam Dower shot a 50, and sophomore Rylan Murphy finished with a 51 for the Rams.
