North Haven Girls’ Tennis Sweeps Week with 4 Wins; Girls’ Lacrosse Notches 2 Victories

Girls’ Tennis

The North Haven girls’ tennis team continued its strong start to the season by notching four more victories last week. The Nighthawks improved to 9-2 on the year after earning wins over Shelton, Wilcox Tech, Sacred Heart Academy, and Mercy in recent action.

North Haven kicked off its week by posting a 7-0 victory at Shelton on April 25. Senior Ally Vollero earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven. The Nighthawks also received victories from freshman Sophia Padro (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2 singles; senior Taylor Morris (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 singles; and junior Risa Tobin (6-1, 6-0) at No. 4 singles.

North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Noelle Carmody and senior Zeena Mohamed claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win. The No. 2 team of sophomore Chandler Morris and sophomore Samantha Ide netted a 6-1, 6-2 win; and the No. 3 team of freshman Emily Cerasoli and freshman Anna Hansard triumphed by a 6-0, 7-5 score.

The following day, North Haven blanked Wilcox Tech by a 7-0 score in a home match. Vollero (6-0, 6-1), Padro (6-0, 6-0), and Tobin (6-0, 6-0) recorded wins at the top three singles spots. Hansard played No. 4 singles and won her match by the score of 6-0, 6-0. The Nighthawks’ doubles team of Taylor Morris and Mohamed, Chandler Morris and Carmody, and Cerasoli and sophomore Alyssa Cherian all posted 6-0, 6-0 victories.

On April 27, The Nighthawks earned a 5-2 win versus Sacred Heart Academy in a road match. Padro (6-0, 6-1), Taylor Morris (6-0, 6-1), and Tobin (6-0, 6-0) won their singles matches. Chandler Morris and Ide won a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles; while Cerasoli and Hansard notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.

Then on April 28, North Haven hosted Mercy and claimed a 6-1 victory versus the Tigers. Vollero (6-0, 6-0), Padro (6-0, 6-0), Taylor Morris (6-0, 6-2), and Tobin (6-0, 6-1) were victorious in singles play for the Nighthawks. On the doubles courts, North Haven’s tandems of Carmody-Mohamed (6-2, 6-2) and Cerasoli-Hansard (6-1, 6-0) also earned straight-sets wins.

Boys’ Tennis

The North Haven boys’ tennis team took three defeats last week to move to 3-8 on the season.

On April 25, North Haven lost a 4-3 decision against Cheshire in a home match. Senior Ben Rudikoff earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles matchup; while freshman Seth Tobin claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles for North Haven. The Nighthawks’ No. 1 doubles team of senior Justin Geremia and junior Jess Hansard won their contest by a 6-0, 6-4 score.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Hand took a 7-0 loss to the Tigers. On April 2, the Nighthawks dropped a 5-2 decision against Xavier in a home match. Rudikoff gutted out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory for North Haven at No. 2 singles. Billy Lipinski played a three-setter at No. 3 singles and won the matchup by the score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team claimed victory in two of its three games last week and now has a record of 4-5 on the year.

North Haven took a 17-5 home loss to Amity on April 26. Liz Hanson, senior Shea Saracino, senior Riley Minns, senior Eliza O’Connor, and Ellie Kerzner scored the Nighthawks’ goals in the contest. Head Coach Bernie Pellegrino said that sophomore Nora Coyle turned in an excellent performance on the draw for North Haven, adding that the Nighthawks also received a staunch effort on defense from seniors Jenna Pine, Lauren Bogaert, and Erin Johns, along with junior Aisling Pretty.

Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted Shelton and claimed a 12-4 victory versus the Gaels at North Haven Middle School. North Haven held a slim 2-1 advantage at halftime before scoring 10 goals during a dominating second-half performance to come away with the win.

Saracino scored 5 goals for the Nighthawks in the victory. O’Connor scored 3 goals, seniors Sophia Dorio had 2 goals, and senior Riley Minns and sophomore Catherine Bianchi added 1 goal apiece.

North Haven’s defensive corps of Bogaert, Johns, Pine, Pretty, senior Emma Kircaldie, junior Ava Huntley, and sophomore Kylie Pollard played a huge role in limiting Shelton to 4 goals in the game. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Sommer made 10 saves to get the win in net.

Then on April 30, North Haven played a road game against Berlin and posted a 14-13 victory in non-conference action. The Nighthawks held a 9-5 lead at halftime and then fended off Berlin’s comeback bid during the second half. With North Haven up by a goal, Sommer made 4 crucial saves in the final minutes to preserve the win for the Nighthawks. Sommer had 21 total saves on the day and was named the Player of the Game by her teammates.

Saracino netted 7 goals to help North Haven emerge victorious. O’Connor scored 5 goals for the Nighthawks, while Minns and Hanson added 1 goal apiece in the nail-biting win. Hanson and Dorio both had 3 assists, and Saracino also had an assist.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team played one game last week when it hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on April 28. The Nighthawks took an 18-5 loss against the Green Knights at North Haven Middle School to put their record at 3-6 on the season.

Softball

The North Haven softball team split a pair of games last week to move to 7-4 this year. The Nighthawks took a loss to East Haven before defeating Foran in their recent contests.

North Haven took a 4-2 defeat versus East Haven in a road game on April 25. Senior Caroline Toni drove home both of North Haven’s runs in the game. Senior Megan Cross and junior Juliana Galasso each had 2 hits for the Nighthawks.

Then on April 28, North Haven hosted Foran and notched a 7-2 win over the Lions. Sophomore Reese Hebert pitched a complete game to led the Nighthawks to the victory. Senior Jamie Swiatek, junior Maria Lockery, sophomore Izzy Blanchard, and freshman Alyssa DiGiovanna all had 2 hits for North Haven.

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team lost a pair of matchups last week to move to 4-7 on the season. The Nighthawks took defeats against Sheehan and West Haven in last week’s games.

North Haven took a 15-2 loss to Sheehan in a home game on April 25. Senior Mike Anquillare went 1-for-2 with 2 walks and an RBI for the Nighthawks. Senior Derek Novicki had a walk with a run scored and an RBI, while junior Steven Vincent drew 2 walks and scored a run.

Then on April 29, the Nighthawks faced West Haven on the road and took a 5-4 loss to the Blue Devils. North Haven held a 4-2 lead before West Haven scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-4 advantage.

Senior Anthony Acampora went 2-for-3 for North Haven, while senior Shaun Murray was 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs, and 2 RBI.

Junior Tyler Harger went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a run; senior Owen Pincince was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and an RBI; and Anquillare went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Junior Jack Martineau pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Nighthawks.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team competed against Lauralton Hall and Branford in a tri-meet on April 28. The Nighthawks earned a split by claiming a 70-66 win against North Haven and taking a 95-45 loss to Lauralton Hall.

Senior Emily Cocco took first place in the shot put (29-2.5) and the discus (80-10) for the Nighthawks at the meet. Sophomore Grayce Christoforo finished first in the javelin (85-4) for North Haven.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team moved to 5-2 on the season after splitting a meet against Branford and Fairfield Prep on April 27. The Nighthawks earned a victory over Fairfield Prep (115-35) and took a loss against Branford (80-70) to gain a split of the meet.

Daniel-Mark Thomas finished first in the 400 (56.0) and the long jump (17-10.5) for North Haven at the meet. Senior Cole DeCusati took first place in the discus (130-2.75) and the shot put (43-4). Matt Crispi won the 300 (47.0), and Nico Boyle finished first in the 3,200 (10:53.9) for the Nighthawks.
