Morgan Golf Team Improves to 7-0; Girls’ Lacrosse Squad Earns First Win

Boys’ Golf

The Morgan boys’ golf team improved to 7-0 on the season by winning all three of its matches last week. The Huskies earned a win versus Old Saybrook and two victories over Old Lyme to stay perfect on the campaign.

Morgan started off its week by claiming a 172-188 road win against Old Saybrook at Fenwick Golf Course on April 26. Senior Drew Nye collected medalist honors by scoring a low total of 39 for the Huskies. Sophomore CJ Giuliano was right behind Nye with a score of 40 for Morgan. Senior Nick Schmidt shot a 44, while junior Ray Swan finished with a 49 in the victory.

The next day, Morgan hosted Old Lyme and won the contest by the score of 172-199 at Clinton Country Club. Giuliano was the match medalist with a low round of 40 for the Huskies. Schmidt, Nye, and senior Tyler Greenhouse all shot a 44 to help Morgan prevail.

The day after that, Morgan faced Old Lyme on the road and defeated the Wildcats by a 185-202 score at the Black Hall Club. Giuliano (45), Nye (46), Schmidt (47), Greenhouse (48), and Swan (49) competed for the Huskies in the meet.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team played three road games last week and came away with two wins to improve to 5-9 on the year.

Morgan started off its week by earning a 9-5 road victory over Portland on April 25. Brady Fritz went 3-for-4 to lead the Huskies’ offense, while senior Ethan Ranaudo also had multiple hits on the day. Ranaudo also picked up the win on the mound by tossing 6 innings with 9 strikeouts for Morgan. Senior Garret Garbinski pitched the seventh inning to finish off the victory.

Two days later, Morgan played a road game against East Hampton and triumphed by a 7-1 score. Garbinski tossed a complete game to get the win on the hill for the Huskies. The right-hander allowed just 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 13 batters in 7 innings pitched.

Senior Ethan Reemsnyder hit his third home run of the season and also had 2 stolen bases for Morgan, which stole 8 bases in the game. Garbinski and sophomore Sean Green also had hits to pace the Huskies’ offense.

On April 29, Morgan was back on the road to play Valley Regional and took a 12-3 loss to the Warriors.

Softball

The Morgan softball team took two defeats last week to put its record at 3-9 on the year.

On April 27, Morgan played a road game versus East Hampton and lost to the Bellringers by a 15-11 final. Then on April 29, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional and took a 16-1 loss in the contest.

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team stands at 6-3 on the year after splitting a pair of recent matchups.

Morgan posted a 7-0 shutout against Cromwell in a home match on April 25. Two days later, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and lost the contest by a 5-2 score. Junior Joseph Morse claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 singles match for Morgan versus. Junior Nick Bausch won a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles for the Huskies.

Girls’ Tennis

The Morgan girls’ tennis team had two road matches last week and came away with split of the set to move to 6-4 this season.

Morgan took a 7-0 defeat to Old Lyme in a road match on April 27. Then on April 29, the Huskies were back on the road to face North Branford and notched a 5-2 win versus the Thunderbirds.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Morgan girls’ lacrosse team picked up its first win of the year and when the Huskies claimed a 16-13 home victory versus Cromwell last week. The Huskies also took losses to Haddam-Killingworth and Somers for an overall record of 1-8 on the season.

Morgan defeated Cromwell by the score of 16-13 in a home game on April 26. Sophomore Maeva Madura put forth a huge performance by scoring 10 goals for the Huskies in the victory. She also had 9 draw controls. Junior Brooke Carlisle scored 3 goals and had 2 draw controls for Morgan. Sophomore Ava Schmidt and freshman Cora Dunham both scored 1 goal to go with 1 assist. Senior Cailin Steahle scored a goal, and fellow senior Alexis Shields contributed an assist. Junior Marin Stopkoski made 15 saves in net to help the Huskies get the win.

Two days later, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and dropped a 7-5 contest against the Cougars. Madura scored 3 goals, while Julia Tanner and Steahle both scored 1 goal. Schmidt had 1 assist. Stopkoski made 11 saves.

On April 30, Morgan took a 12-6 loss to Somers in a non-conference home game. Madura scored 2 goals, Carlisle had 1 goal with 2 assists, and Steahle had 1 goal and 1 assist for the Huskies. Shields and Tanner both scored a goal. Stopkoski had 13 saves in net.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team gained a split of two road games last week to put its record at 6-3 on the year.

On April 28, the Huskies took a 7-1 defeat at Haddam-Killingworth. Two days later, Morgan played a road tilt versus Cromwell and defeated the Panthers by the final score of 10-5.
