Cougars’ Softball Sweeps Week with 3 Victories; Boys’ Lacrosse Team Improves to 7-1

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team improved to 12-1 on the season after winning all three of its games last week. The Cougars posted shutouts over Old Saybrook and Cromwell and then earned a win against North Branford in recent action.

H-K started up its week by earning a 21-0 victory at Old Saybrook in a 5-inning game on April 25. Junior Kaleigh Bodak went 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI for the Cougars. Sophomore Annabelle Zajac had 2 hits with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Sophomore Bella Richwine, Bodak, and sophomore Brooke Hickman combined for the shutout on the mound.

Then on April 27, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and blanked the Panthers by a 7-0 score. Richwine and Bodak shared the pitching duties for H-K with Bodak getting the win. Sophomore Ivy McNeil had 3 hits with 2 RBI, sophomore Cheyenne LaTouche had a single and a home run with 2 runs scored, and Richwine hit a 2-run single in the victory.

The next day, H-K was on the road to face North Branford and claimed a 9-4 victory versus the Thunderbirds. Hickman picked up the win by tossing 5 innings of relief for H-K, allowing 1 run to go with 8 strikeouts. McNeil had 3 more hits, while Bodak had 2 hits, scored 2 runs, and drove in 2 runs.

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team moved to 8-4 this season after winning two of its three games last week.

The Cougars claimed a 4-1 victory versus Old Saybrook in a home game on April 25. Senior Alex Sheehan struck out 8 and allowed just 1 earned run to get his first win of the season for H-K. Sophomore Blake Kamoen had 2 hits with 2 RBI, and senior Lucas Kamoen had 1 hit and 1 RBI for the Cougars.

Then on April 27, H-K hit the road to face Cromwell and eked out a 2-1 win against the Panthers. Junior Callen Powers struck out 9 batters in a complete-game effort for H-K. Senior Nick Glynn had a big hit to drive home both of the Cougars’ runs in the fourth inning.

The following day, H-K hosted North Branford and lost the contest by a 6-0 score. Junior Dylan Coon and freshman Todd Butler both had a hit for Haddam-Killingworth.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse squad claimed victory in both of last week’s contests and is now 7-1 on the year.

On April 26, H-K hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats by the final tally of 7-4. Freshman Gunnar Howes scored 3 goals for the Cougars in the victory. Senior Corey Phipps scored 2 goals, junior Nolan Braren had 1 goal with 2 assists, and junior Alex Phipps had 1 goal and 1 assist. Senior Matteo Piacenti and junior Jack Insalaco contributed 1 assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Braden Civiello earned the win in net for H-K.

Two days later, the Cougars played a home game against Morgan and claimed a 7-1 win versus the Huskies. Braren and Corey Phipps both had a hat trick by netting 3 goals apiece in the victory, and Phipps also had an assist. Alex Phipps had 1 goal with 1 assist, while Inascalco had 1 assist for the Cougars.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ lacrosse team boosted its record to 5-3 on the season after posting victories in two of its three matchups last week.

The Cougars started off the week by earning a 13-7 win in Old Lyme on April 26. Then on April 28, H-K traveled to Clinton to face Morgan and won the contest by a 7-5 score. Two days later, H-K took an 11-7 loss to Valley Regional in a home game.

Head Coach Shelia Reilly said that Haddam-Killingworth was bolstered by great defensive work that included some clutch ground ball scoops by junior Sophia Ramino, sophomore Sammy Ruimerman, and freshman Ava Ramino throughout the week. The Cougars also had great ball movement on offense with Ruimerman, senior Grace Cassidy, senior Yumi Imai, and junior Audrey Wrinn among the team’s top goal scorers on the week. Senior goalkeeper Rhianna Phipps turned in a stellar performance in H-K’s win over Morgan by making 10 saves against 15 shots faced.

Boys’ Golf

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ golf team improved to 3-1-1 on the season after earning two wins and a tie last week.

H-K teed off its week by posting a 175-193 home victory versus Hale-Ray at Black Birch Golf Course on April 25. Freshman Andrew Crayton shot a 41 to lead the Cougars on the afternoon. Sophomore Declan Kessler shot a 42, junior Jacob Maier finished with a 44, senior Andrew Fleig scored a 48, and senior Gabe Barile posted a score of 50 for H-K.

The following day, the Cougars defeated Old Lyme by a 193-205 score in a road match at the Black Hall Club. Then on April 28, H-K hosted North Branford and played the Thunderbirds to a 184-184 draw. Fleig (44), Maier (44), Crayton (48), and Barile (48) competed for the Cougars at the meet.

Boys’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ tennis team moved to 4-6 this year gaining a split of two recent matches.

The Cougars started off their week by posting a 4-3 victory at Old Lyme on April 25. The contest was tied 3-3 with the No. 3 singles match still on the courts. H-K senior captain Joey Mercier netted a 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure the victory for the Cougars. Sophomore Eddie White notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles; and Bryce Leiberman posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles match. Gus Luzietti, playing singles for the second time this season, earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 4 singles match for Haddam-Killingworth.

On April 28, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and were edged out by a 4-3 score. With the match tied 3-3, Cromwell won a 10-8 decision in a doubles contest that served as a super tiebreaker to determine a winner.

White (6-1, 6-4) and Leiberman (6-1, 6-1) were straight-set victors at the top two singles spots for H-K. The Cougars’ No. 1 doubles team of Luzietti and freshman Joe Wessinger won their contest by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

Girls’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ tennis team took two defeats last week to move to 0-11 on the season.

On April 25, H-K took a 7-0 home loss against Old Lyme. Two days later, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and lost to the Panthers by a 7-0 score.
