Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Improves to 6-1; Softball, Baseball Teams Take Defeats

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team added three more wins to its ledger last week, boosting the Knights’ record to 6-1 in the 2022 spring season. Westbrook earned recent victories versus Valley Regional, Morgan, and Coginchaug to make for an undefeated week between the baselines.

Westbrook kicked off its week by claiming a 5-2 home win against Valley Regional on April 18. Senior Julia Farnoli earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory for Westbrook in the No. 1 singles match. Freshman Megan Bache claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 2 singles matchup.

The Knights’ No. 1 doubles team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt won their match by a 6-0, 6-1 score. The No. 2 team of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo notched a 6-3, 6-0 win; and the No. 3 team of senior Xan Zanzalari and junior Adrianna Stranieri earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Two days later, the Knights hosted Morgan and recorded a 7-0 win over the Huskies at Westbrook High School. Farnoli (6-0, 6-0) and senior Gianni Salibury (6-3, 6-3) posted wins at the top two singles spots. Bache (6-0, 6-0) and junior Caroline Dias (6-3, 6-0) were victorious at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Westbrook’s doubles teams of Koplas-Belcourt (6-1, 6-0), Sacco-Palumbo (6-0, 6-1), and Zanzalari-Stranieri (6-0, 6-0) also won their contests in straight sets.

Then on April 22, Westbrook played a road match at Coginchaug and netted a 6-1 win against the Blue Devils. Salisbury (6-2, 6-0) and Bache (6-2, 6-0) were straight-sets winners at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. The Knights’ also received victories from their doubles duos of Koplas-Belcourt (6-0, 6-0), Sacco-Palumbo (6-1, 6-0), and Zanzalari-Stranieri (6-0, 6-0).

Softball

The Westbrook-Portland (W-P) co-op softball team lost three games last week to move to 1-7 on the season.

On April 18, W-P took a 19-2 home loss to East Hampton. Senior Leah May went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored, while fellow senior Sam Nunez was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for the Knights.

Two days later, the Knights were on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost the game by an 18-0 score. Then on April 22, the Knights took a 28-3 defeat versus Morgan in a home game at Westbrook High School. Nunez went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and May went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team moved to 0-9 this season after taking three recent defeats.

The Knights took a 17-0 loss at East Hampton on April 1. Then on April 20, Westbrook hosted Haddam- Killingworth and took a 14-0 defeat. Senior Dan Zambrano had a hit for Westbrook in the game.

Two days later, the Knights played a road game against Morgan and took a 16-6 defeat to the Huskies.
