Old Saybrook Girls’ Lacrosse Stays Undefeated; Tennis Teams Earn Splits

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team improved its record to 7-0 on the season by winning both of its matchups last week. The Rams claimed victories versus Old Lyme and Morgan to stay undefeated for the 2022 campaign.

Old Saybrook started off its week by netting a 12-7 home win over Old Lyme on April 19. Senior Lily Cody scored 4 goals to go with 2 assists, while freshman Gretchen Kawecki had 3 goals and 3 assists for Old Saybrook in the victory. Junior Chelsea Heinke scored 3 goals with 1 assist, and freshman Ayla D’Anna had 2 goals.

Senior Alexa Coty had an assist for the Rams. Senior Samantha Wakelee made 13 saves in goal for Old Saybrook, which received an excellent defensive effort from Coty, senior Lilly Sigersmith, junior Weston Richards, and senior Lorea Aramendi, along with a solid performance by freshman Grace Desmond, a defender who moved up to make contributions on offense in this contest.

Two days later, the Rams played a road game versus Morgan and notched a 6-5 victory versus the Huskies. Heinke netted 3 goals for Old Saybrook in the win. Kawecki scored 2 goals with 1 assist, while Cody had 1 goal with 2 assists. Sigersmith also had an assist. Wakelee stopped 6 shots in net for the Rams, including a crucial save when Morgan took the last shot on goal in the final minutes of the game.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team lost its two contests last week and is now 3-4 on the year.

On April 19, the Rams took a 14-8 road loss to Old Lyme. Two days later, the Rams hosted Morgan and took a 15-3 defeat against the Huskies at Old Saybrook High School.

Girls’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis team moved to 3-3 on the season after gaining a split of two matches last week.

On April 18, Old Saybrook took a 5-2 home loss versus Morgan. Two days later, the Rams hosted Coginchaug and edged out the Blue Devils by a 4-3 score at Old Saybrook High School.

Boys’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team split a pair of recent matchups and now has a record of 1-4 this year.

The Rams took a 7-0 defeat against Morgan in a road match on April 1. Then on April 20, Old Saybrook played a road match versus Coginchaug and claimed a 4-0 victory for its first win of the year.

Senior Logan Medbury posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory in singles competition for Old Saybrook against Coginchaug. Senior Victor Fuda claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win; while sophomore Daniel Steindl won rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-1 victory on the singles court. Old Saybrook’s doubles team of senior Zach Nichols and senior Joe Maselli won their contest by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team played three games last week and came away with one win to put its record at 6-2 this season. The Rams earned a win versus Valley Regional before taking losses to Cromwell and East Hampton in last week’s action.

In its first game of the week, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and edged out the Warriors by a 2-1 score. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Senior Nick Scalzo singled home the go-ahead run to give the Rams the lead. Scalzo went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for Old Saybrook. Senior Noah Hester was 1-for-1 with 2 walks, a run scored, and 2 stolen bases.

Senior Jake Butler picked up the win on the mound for the Rams. Butler allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 6 innings, striking out 7 and walking 1. Sophomore Connor Lane recorded the last three outs of the game to get the save for Old Saybrook. Lane also made the most plays in the field with 9 in the victory.

Two days later, the Rams took their first defeat of the year when they lost an 8-3 decision to Cromwell in road game. Then on April 22, Old Saybrook played a home game against East Hampton and took a 9-6 defeat to the Bellringers.

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team took a loss to Valley Regional in its lone contest of the week. On April 18, the Rams faced Valley Regional on the road and took a 15-1 defeat to the Warriors to move to 0-5 this season.
