North Haven Softball Sweeps Week With 3 Three Wins; Boys’ Tennis Takes 2 of 3

Softball

The North Haven softball team played three games last week and came away from the slate with three wins to improve its record to 6-3 this year. The Nighthawks notched victories against Sacred Heart Academy, West Haven, and Hamden in last week’s action.

On April 18, North Haven claimed a 3-1 road win over Sacred Heart Academy. North Haven trailed 1-0 entering the top of the seventh inning, but rallied for 3 runs by stringing together 5-consecutive hits in the frame. Senior Anna Schepisi, sophomore Avery Berney, and sophomore Izzy Blanchard drove home the Nighthawks’ runs in the big inning. Senior Caroline Toni had 2 hits in the game. Sophomore Reece Hebert pitched a complete game for North Haven.

Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted West Haven and won the contest by the final score of 9-4. Sophomore Gabby Blanchard hit a 3-run home run, while Toni also homered for North Haven in the victory. Freshman Alyssa DiGiovanna went 3-for-4 with an RBI, junior Juliana Galasso was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and junior Maria Lockery also had 2 hits. Hebert earned the win on the mound for the Nighthawks.

Then on April 22, North Haven wrapped up its week by posting a 14-1 win versus Hamden in a home game. Herbert picked up another victory by pitching a 3-hitter for her third complete game of the week. Toni had a single, 2 doubles, a triple, and 3 RBI to lead the North Haven offense. Galasso went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, while DiGiovanna and senior Megan Cross both had 2 RBI in the win.

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team claimed victory in one of its three games last week to move to 4-5 for the season. The Nighthawks took losses against Amity and Shelton to go with a win over Branford in last week’s contests.

North Haven took a defeat to 10-2 at Amity on April 18. Shaun Murray went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI for the Nighthawks. Tyler Harger went 1-for-1 with 2 walks and also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Branford and won the contest by the score of 13-3 in 6 innings. Jack Martineau pitched 5 innings to get the win for the Nighthawks, allowing 2 earned runs to go with 7 strikeouts. Senior Owen Pincince pitched a scoreless innings in relief.

Pincince also went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI for North Haven. Senior Mike Anquillare went 2-for-4 with 2 walks, a double, 2 runs, and 4 RBI. Senior Anthony Acampora went 1-for-3 with a run and a run and 2 RBI; Steven Vincent was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, a triple, and 2 RBI; Derek Novicki went 1-for-4 with a walk, 2 runs, and 1 RBI; and Shaun Murray drew 4 walks, scored 4 runs, and had an RBI.

In its last game of the week, North Haven took a 12-3 defeat at Shelton on April 22. Senior Ty Rooney went 2-for-3 with a double, and Vincent was also 2-for-3. Acampora went 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, while Pincince was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Boys’ Tennis

The North Haven boys’ tennis team played three matches last week and came away with two victories to improve its record to 3-5 this season. The Nighthawks notched wins over Wilcox Tech and Shelton to go with a loss against Fairfield Prep in recent action.

North Haven kicked off its week by earning a 7-0 road victory versus Wilcox Tech on April 1. Freshman Seth Tobin posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match for the Nighthawks. Senior Ben Rudikoff claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles; junior Billy Lipinski notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles; and sophomore Nathan Oh won a 6-3, 6-0 decision in the No. 4 singles match.

North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Justin Geremia and sophomore Parthiv Patel earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory. The team of junior Alex Ranciato and junior Evan Looney netted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles; and North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of freshman Nick Sabina and freshman Hashim Ibrahim won its match by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

The next day, North Haven took a 6-1 home loss against Fairfield Prep. Rudikoff gutted out a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) victory for the Nighthawks in the No. 2 singles match.

Then on April 22, North Haven hosted Shelton and claimed a 4-3 win against the Gaels. Junior Lucas de Lancastre earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven. Rudikoff posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 2 singles; and Lipinski claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win at in the No. 3 singles match. North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of Patel and junior Jonathan Chin notched a 6-4, 7-5 victory to help the Nighthawks win the contest.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team won one of its three matchups last week to put its record at 3-5 for the season. The Nighthawks took defeats against St. Paul and Waterford and also earned a win versus Shelton in last week’s contests.

On April 18, North Haven took a 14-8 loss to St. Paul in a home game. Then on April 21, the Nighthawks faced Shelton on the road and claimed an 8-7 win against the Gaels.

Senior Jake Hines scored 3 goals for the Nighthawks in their victory versus Shelton. Senior Caden Doheny and freshman Ben Pizzano netted 2 goals apiece. Senior Michael Rubano added a goal in the win. Junior Mike Masto made 13 saves in net for North Haven.

In its last game of the week, North Haven took a 7-5 loss at Waterford on April 23.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team hosted Lauralton Hall for its lone contest of the week on April 21. The Nighthawks took a 16-7 loss the Crusaders at North Haven Middle School and now have a record of 2-4 this season.

Senior Shea Saracino scored 3 goals for North Haven in its contest versus Lauralton Hall. Senior Riley Minns, senior Eliza O’Connor, senior Ellie Kerzner, and sophomore Catherine Bianchi added 1 goal apiece for the Nighthawks. Senior Hannah Sommer made 13 saves in net.
