Morgan Boys’ Lacrosse Sweeps the Week; Baseball, Girls’ Tennis Take 2 of 3

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team played three games last week and came away with three victories to improve its record to 5-2 for the season. The Huskies earned wins versus North Branford, Old Saybrook, and Stonington in last week’s action.

Morgan started off its week by posting a 7-6 home victory versus North Branford on April 19. Junior Ben McDonnell scored 4 goals to go with 1 assist in the win. Senior Aiden Madura and sophomore Casey Corrigan both had 1 goal and 1 assist, while junior Dylan Mazzarella added a goal for the Huskies. Junior goalie Abe Adams-Hull made 13 saves to earn the win in net.

Two days later, the Huskies played a road game against Old Saybrook and posted a 15-3 victory over the Rams. Mazzarella had 4 goals with 3 assists, Corrigan also scored 4 goals, and McDonnell had 3 goals with 1 assist in the victory. Senior Ethan Madura scored 2 goals with 1 assist, Aiden Madura had 1 goal and 2 assists, and junior Jake Mastrianno had 1 goal with 1 assist. Senior Tyler Mucha and sophomore Nico Cimino each contributed an assist in the win. Adams-Hull made 11 saves for Morgan.

Then on April 23, Morgan hosted non-conference opponent Stonington and won the contest by a 12-10 score. Corrigan had 4 goals with 2 assists, while McDonnell scored 3 goals to go with 2 assists in the win. Mazzarella netted 3 goals, Aiden Madura had 1 goal and 3 assists, and Ethan Madura had 1 goal with 1 assist. Adams-Hull stopped 15 shots in goal.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team improved to 3-8 on the season after winning two of its three games last week. The Huskies posted victories against Hale-Ray and Westbrook to go with a loss to Coginchaug in last week’s action.

Morgan kicked off the week by earning an 11-3 road win over Hale-Ray on April 18. Senior Ethan Ranaudo notched the win on the hill for the Huskies, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Sophomore Lucas Hoadley threw one inning in relief for Morgan.

Morgan’s offense got on the board when senior Garret Garbinski brought home a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Huskies put up 5 runs in the third inning, led by singles from senior Bailey Goss and senior Ethan Reemsnyder and a double by Garbinski.

Morgan tallied 13 hits on the day with Reemsnyder and Robert Estabrook getting 3 hits apiece. Morgan also had 8 stolen bases in the victory. Goss led the way on the basepaths by swiping 3 bags for the Huskies.

Two days later, Morgan took a 9-3 road loss against Coginchaug. Ranaudo, Garbinski, Goss, and freshman Wyatt Luke each had a hit in the contest. Senior Brady Fritz drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Then on April 22, Morgan hosted Westbrook and claimed a 16-6 victory against the Knights. Garbinski, Reemsnyder, and Fritz all had multiple hits for the Huskies with Garbinski going 3-for-4 at the plate. Garbinski, Fritz, junior Nick Spaziano, sophomore Sean Green, sophomore Ross Treubig, and Hoadley each had an RBI in a big fourth inning for Morgan. Hoadley also picked up the win on the mound by pitching 5 innings with 7 strikeouts.

Girls’ Tennis

The Morgan girls’ tennis team stands at 5-3 this season after winning two recent matches.

Morgan earned a 5-2 victory at Old Saybrook on April 18. Sophomore Molly Vitola earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 singles match; while junior Sophia Pacileo claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles for Morgan. The Huskies’ No. 1 doubles team of junior Sara Morrissey and sophomore Gavin Gersz notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory; the No. 2 team of senior Ava Rapini and junior Sadie Lyons was a 6-3, 6-3 winner; and the No. 3 team of junior Leah Vath and freshman Olivia Siciliano triumphed by a 6-4, 6-4 score.

Two days later, the Huskies were back on the road to face Westbrook and took a 7-0 loss. Then on April 22. The Huskies hosted North Branford and edged out the Thunderbirds by the final score of 4-3. Lyons netted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles; and freshman Rachel Spaziano posted a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 4 singles match for the Huskies. Morrissey and Gersz won a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles; and the team of junior Amelia Whelan and junior Eve Garner claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Softball

The Morgan softball team won one of its three games last week to move to 2-8 on the year.

Morgan took a 6-2 home loss against Hale-Ray on April 18. Junior Courtney Vause had 2 hits with a run scored for Morgan. Junior Angelina Herbst hit a double, while junior Kacey Edwards had a triple with a walk and a run scored.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and lost the contest by a 17-2 final. Then on April 22, Morgan claimed a 28-3 victory against Westbrook-Portland in a road game at Westbrook High School.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Morgan girls’ lacrosse team lost three games last week to move to 0-6 on the year.

On April 19, Morgan took a 16-3 defeat at North Branford. Sophomore Maeve Madura scored 3 goals for the Huskies, while senior Alex Shields had 1 assist in the game. Junior Marin Stopkoski made 12 saves in net for Morgan.

Then on April 21, the Huskies hosted Old Saybrook and lost to the Rams by a 6-5 score. Madura scored 4 goals to go with 1 assist and 5 draw controls for Morgan. Junior Brooke Carlisle had 1 goal with 1 assist in the contest. Stopkoski made 17 saves in goal.

Two days later, Morgan took a 9-7 loss versus Waterford in a non-conference home game. Madura had 4 goals with 1 assist and 4 draw controls in the contest. Sophomore Ava Schmidt recorded 3 assists, sophomore Ashley Reemsnyder and sophomore Emma Champagne both scored a goal, and freshman Cora Dunham had an assist. Stopkoski stopped 14 shots in net for Morgan.

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team split a pair of matchups last week to move to 5-2 for the 2022 season.

On April 18, the Huskies posted a 7-0 home win over Old Saybrook. Junior Joseph Morse netted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 singles match for Morgan. Junior Steven Kinser claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles; and fellow junior Matt Lopez earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. On the doubles court, Morgan’s No. 1 duo of senior Page Guptill and junior Oliver Baker notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Then on April 20, Morgan hosted Westbrook and lost to the Knights by a 4-3 final. Morse earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles for the Huskies. Morgan’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Ryan Mansfield and Guptill claimed a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win; while the No. 3 team of junior Erik Barrera and freshman Ryan Gray triumphed by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
