Guilford Softball Posts Undefeated Week; Other Clubs Grab Multiple Victories

Softball

The Guilford softball team improved its record to 6-2 on the season after claiming victory in all three of its games last week. The Grizzlies notched wins versus Lauralton Hall, East Lyme, and Lyman Hall in recent action.

Guilford kicked off the week by claiming a 6-4 road win over Lauralton Hall on April 18. Sophomore Sophia Meade pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts for the Grizzlies. Senior Allie Petonito led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.

Then on April 20, the Grizzlies hosted East Lyme and defeated the Vikings by a 12-2 score in a non-conference game. Meade earned the win on the mound after striking out 13 batters for Guilford. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate. Junior Charlotte Martocci, freshman Ella Munson, and Petonito each had 2 hits for the Grizzlies, who scored 6 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Then on April 22, Guilford played a home game against Lyman Hall and notched a 4-2 victory. Petonito paced the Guilford offense by going 2-for-3 with a double. Meade tossed another complete game as the Grizzlies increased their win streak to four in a row.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Guilford girls’ lacrosse squad improved its record to 6-1 by winning both of its matchups on last week’s schedule. The Grizzlies earned victories versus Cheshire and Sacred Heart Academy and have now won six-consecutive games.

On April 19, Guilford played a road game against Cheshire and defeated the Rams by a 14-12 score. Sophomore Payton Root scored 4 goals to go with 3 assists for Guilford, while senior Maddie Epke had 2 goals and 4 assists and 15 draw controls in the victory. Senior Taylor Farace and senior MJ Santa Barbara both scored 3 goals, and senior Lorelei King had 1 goal with 1 assist. Sophomore Paige Balletto added a goal for the Grizzlies.

Three days later, Guilford notched a 19-5 home win over Sacred Heart Academy. Root scored 5 goals, Epke had 2 goals with 4 assists, and Farace scored 3 goals to go with 2 assists in the victory. King and Balletto both had 2 goals and 1 assist, Tea Gambardella also scored 2 goals, Santa Barabara and Kayla Nophsker both had 1 goal with 1 assist, and Delaney Victory also scored a goal for Guilford. Senior goalie Sydney Widlitz earned the win in net in both of the Grizzles’ victories during the week.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team faced off against Fairfield Prep for its lone contest of the week on April 23. The Grizzlies took a 19-2 defeat to the Jesuits at Fairfield University to put their record at 4-2.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis team won both of its matches last week to improve its record to 4-3 this year.

The Grizzles began their week by claiming a 4-3 home victory versus Jonathan Law on April 20. Two days later, Guilford hit the road to face Sheehan and claimed a 5-2 win.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team played three road matches and came away from the slate with two wins to improve its record to 6-2 this year. The Grizzlies took a loss to Amity in their first contest of the week, but bounced back by grabbing victories against Nonnewaug and Foran to make for a winning week.

On April 18, Guilford took a 7-0 defeat versus Amity in a road match. The very next day, the Grizzlies were back on the road to face Nonnewaug and won the contest by a 4-3 score. Junior Riley Mullett earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles for Guilford. Freshman Caroline Hergan won a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2 singles; sophomore Kendall Mulligan claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles; and freshman Olivia Cowperthwait notched a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory in the No. 4 singles match for the Grizzlies.

Guilford finished its week by posting a 7-0 shutout at Foran on April 20. Mullett (6-0, 6-0) and Hergan (6-0, 6-1) earned straight-set wins at the top two singles spots. Freshman Sophie Gochman posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles; and sophomore Irene Esplugues won her No. 4 singles match by a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Guilford’s No. 1 doubles team of Alexie Gipson and Mulligan earned an 8-2 win versus Foran. The Grizzlies’ No. 2 team of senior Jadeyn Violette and junior Kate DeAngelo claimed an 8-0 victory; and the No. 3 team of freshman Clara Arpie and freshman Jenna Marra prevailed by an 8-1 final.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team sent several athletes to compete at the Connecticut Distance Festival at Hall High School on April 22. The Grizzlies saw several athletes record personal-best times in the 1,600-meter run at the meet.

Senior Justin Shiffrin ran a personal-best time of 4:27.23 in the mile at the festival. Also turning in personal-best marks for Guilford were junior Michael Masotti (4:32.34), sophomore Coleman Love (4:46.56), senior Thomas Gregory (4:53.59), and sophomore Alex Milano (4:56.82).

Sophomore Mackinley Cho posted a personal-best time of 5:02.69 for the 1,600. Guilford also saw sophomore Cooper Woods (5:16.30), freshman Enzo Taverna (5:27.80), junior Jefferson Guo (5:30.34), and freshman Luca Scafidi (5:30.89) run their way to personal-best performances in the event.

Crew

The Guilford crew program visited Rogers Lake to race against Old Lyme on April 13.

The Guilford girls’ varsity crew rowed well at the meet, staying with Old Lyme until the final 500 meters, when the host Wildcats pulled away to win by two boat lengths.

Old Lyme also earned the victory versus Guilford in the boys’ varsity race, winning by a few lengths. In novice eights racing, the Guilford boys defeated Old Lyme by eight seconds.

After racing eights, both schools sent out varsity fours to compete. For the Guilford girls, the team of Ashlyn Garrick, Hailey Hutchison, Panorea Vasiliou, Cathlyn Marinis, and coxswain Moira McGovern raced well against the experienced Old Lyme fours, finishing two seconds behind the Wildcats’ first varsity boat.

For the Guilford boys, the team of Nicky Amter, Will Sheldon, Max Petra, Bradyn Benben, and coxswain Guilia Magani finished in second behind Old Lyme.
