The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team improved its record to 5-0 by winning both of its matchups on last week’s schedule. The Rams claimed victories versus Cromwell and Haddam-Killingworth to stay undefeated in the 2022 season.
On April 12, Old Saybrook notched a 19-10 road win over Cromwell. Freshman Gretchen Kawecki had 6 goals with 2 assists for the Rams, and senior Lily Cody also scored 6 goals in the victory. Kawecki and Cody also dominated at the center circle by winning 16 of their combined 20 draws.
Junior Maddie Beaudoin scored 3 goals in the win. Senior Chelsea Heinke and freshman Ayla D’Anna both had 2 goals and an assist, while junior Juliette Condulis and sophomore Amelia Sigersmith each had 1 assist. Senior goalie Sam Wakelee made 5 saves for the Rams, whose defensive unit was led by seniors Alexa Coty and Lilly Sigersmith.
Two days later, the Rams hosted Haddam-Killingworth and defeated the Cougars by a 16-2 score. Wakelee made 8 saves in net for Old Saybrook, which was bolstered by an exceptional defensive effort from Coty, Lilly Sigersmith, junior Weston Richards, and freshman Grace Desmond.
On the offensive end of the field, Kawecki scored 6 goals to go with an assist, and Cody had 4 goals and 3 assists for Old Saybrook. Heinke had 3 goals and an assist, senior Grace Adams had a goal with an assist, and freshman Lila Cadley scored a goal in her first varsity start for the Rams.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team played two games last week and came away with split to put its record at 3-2 this season.
On April 12, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and defeated the Panthers by the final score of 16-4. Two days later, the Rams were on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and took an 8-3 loss to the Cougars.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team took on Cromwell and North Branford in a tri-meet at North Branford High School on April 13. Old Saybrook earned victories over both Cromwell (131.5-13.5) and North Branford (133-8) to sweep the meet.
Junior Avery Rueckert claimed first place in the 100 (12.91) and the 200 (26.22) for Old Saybrook. Sophomore Alex Ling finished first in the discus (74-9) and the javelin (82-0.5). Senior Molly Nygard won the 400 (1:08.09), junior Christina Grace finished first in the 110 hurdles (18.28), senior Avery Nosal placed first for the long jump (14-7.25), and junior Alexandra Benni earned top honors in the triple jump (30-4.5).
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Old Saybrook boys’ outdoor track team competed against North Branford and Cromwell in a tri-meet at North Branford High School last week. The Rams swept the meet by earning a 96-24 win over North Branford and edging out Cromwell by a 65-63 final on April 13.
Senior Matthew Johnson took first place in the long jump (18-5.5) and the triple jump (33-8.5) for Old Saybrook. Senior Robert Johnson won the javelin (107-9), while sophomore Bardh Thaci took first in the shot put (37-1) and the discus (107-2) for the Rams. Senior Mitchell Dipalma finished first in the 110 hurdles (16.03), and freshman Everett Miller won the 800 (2:23.3).
Boys’ Golf
The Old Saybrook boys’ golf team teed off its season by playing several matches last week. The Rams came away from the slate with a win, a loss, and a draw for a record of 1-1-1 through the first week of their campaign.
Old Saybrook posted a 182-192 home win over Haddam-Killingworth in its season opener at Fenwick Golf Course on April 11. Sophomore Drew Kulman collected medalist honors by shooting a low score of 42 for the round. Sophomore Rylan Murphy scored a 44, sophomore Jacob Speed finished with a 47, and sophomore Connor Casella shot a 49 for Head Coach Brian Dailey’s squad.
The next day, Old Saybrook hosted North Branford and played the Thunderbirds to a 184-184 tie. Kulman was the match medalist with a score of 41 for Old Saybrook. Murphy (46), Speed (47), and Casella (50) rounded out the Rams’ pack at the match.
On April 13, the Rams took a 199-202 loss to Valley Regional in a road match at the Black Hall Club. Kulman shot a 46 for Old Saybrook. The Rams’ other competitors were Casella (51), Murphy (52), junior Adam Dower (53), and junior Peter Wisialowski (57).
Girls’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis team split a pair of matches last week to move to 2-2 on the season.
On April 13, Old Saybrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and edged out the Cougars by a 4-3 score. The next day, the Rams were on the road to face Valley Regional and took a 7-0 loss in the contest.
Boys’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis squad lost both of its contests last week and is now 0-3 on the year.
The Rams dropped a 3-2 decision at Haddam-Killingworth on April 13. Junior Jack Forrestt and junior Michael Kapij earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles for Old Saybrook. The Rams’ No. 2 doubles team of senior Zachary Nichols and seniors Joseph Maselli won their match by a 6-1, 6-4 score.
The following day, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and took a 6-1 loss to the Warriors.
Softball
The Old Saybrook softball team took two defeats last week to move to 0-4 this season.
On April 11, Old Saybrook took an 18-0 loss at Coginchaug. Senior Sophia Barker hit a single, and freshman Lexi Powers drew a walk for the Rams in the contest.
Two days later, the Rams faced Morgan on the road and lost the Huskies by a 13-0 score. Senior Cassie Johnson had 2 hits with a stolen base for Old Saybrook.
