North Haven Girls’ Tennis Wins Two Close Contests; Boys’ Track Earns Three Victories

Girls’ Tennis

The North Haven girls’ tennis team won both of its matches last week to boost its record to 3-2 on the campaign. The Nighthawks notched close victories over Hand and Lauralton Hall to make for a great week on the courts.

On April 11, North Haven hosted Hand and notched a big 4-3 win over the Tigers. Freshman Sophia Padro posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles for the Nighthawks. Senior Taylor Morris netted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles; while junior Risa Tobin was a 6-1, 6-1 winner in the No. 4 singles match. North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of freshman Anna Hansard and freshman Emily Cerasoli recorded a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory in the decisive contest to help North Haven prevail.

Two days later, the Nighthawks played a road match versus Lauralton Hall and claimed a 4-3 win over the Crusaders. Senior Ally Vollero netted a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles for North Haven. Morris (6-1, 6-0) and Tobin (6-0, 6-0) triumphed at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Hansard and Cerasoli posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the deciding contest at No. 3 singles for the second match in a row.

Boys’ Tennis

The North Haven boys’ tennis team took two defeats last week to move to 1-4 this season.

On April 12, North Haven took a 7-0 home loss versus Branford. The next day, the Nighthawks were on the road to face Jonathan Law and lost the contest by a 5-2 score.

Senior Ben Rudikoff notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory for North Haven in the No. 2 singles match versus Jonathan Law. North Haven’s No. 2 doubles team of junior Evan Looney and Alex Ranciato claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team swept a tri-meet against Sheehan and East Haven and then posted a win over Platt Tech last week. The Nighthawks improved their record to 4-1 on the season with these victories.

The Nighthawks scored wins over Sheehan (105-45) and East Haven (127-23) in a meet at Vanacore Field on April 12. Junior Tyler Wurm took first place in the 800 (2:16.46) and the 1,600 (4:57.09) for North Haven in the sweep.

The Nighthawks were also bolstered by first-place finishes from sophomore Jake McCreven in the 110 hurdles (17.03), junior Matt Crispi in the 300 hurdles (47.38), senior MJ DeVilliers in the 400 (55.76), and sophomore Nico Boyle in the 3,200 (11:22.48). North Haven also received victories from junior Yousef Gebril in the shot put (45-10.5), senior Cole DeCusati in the discus (126-6), and junior Blake Butler in the high jump (5-4).

North Haven’s 4x400 relay of DeVilliers, senior Luke Nugent, junior Daniel-Mark Thomas, and Wurm finished in first place (4:02.5). The Nighthawks’ 4x800 relay of Boyle, freshman Matthew DeNardis, sophomore AJ Signor, and Nugent also took first place (9:41.39).

On April 14, North Haven hosted Platt Tech and won the matchup by the score of 119.5-30.5. Wurm had another big meet by winning the 800 (2:17.8), the 1,600 (5:06.3), and the 3,200 (11:57) for the Nighthawks.

North Haven also received victories from McCreven in the 110 hurdles (172), sophomore Conor Rourke in the 300 hurdles (47.9), and Thomas in the 400 (54.3). Also winning their events were DeCusati in the discus (125-1), junior Blake Butler in the high jump (5-2), sophomore Liam Millman in the javelin (129-11.75), senior Matthew O’Connell in the pole vault (10-0), junior Ethan Anderson in the shot put (45-6), and junior David Frost in the triple jump (35-7.75).

The Nighthawks’ 4x400 relay of freshman Russell Collins, junior Ronnell Higgins, senior Danial Saleem, and sophomore Daniel Malone finished in first place (4:10.7). The 4x800 relay of freshman Logan Ohanyan, freshman Jace Matthew, freshman Joe Solimene, and freshman Matthew DeNardis also came in first place (10:31.1).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team took two defeats when it hosted a tri-meet last week. North Haven took loss against Sheehan (127-22) and East Haven (77-69) at Vanacore Field on April 12.

Boys’ Golf

The North Haven boys’ golf team teed off the 2022 season by playing several matches last week. The Nighthawks came away with three victories and have an early record of 3-2.

North Haven started its season by sweeping a quad-meet at Alling Memorial Golf Club on April 12. The Nighthawks posted a team score of 198 to earn wins versus Wilbur Cross (230), Hillhouse (259), and Career (260).

Freshman Will Sagnella collected medalist honors by scoring a low round of 45 for North Haven. Sophomore Kevin Lawlor finished with a score of 49, sophomore Dinny LaDore shot a 51, junior Christian Basmadjian posted a score of 53, and sophomore Chris Labanara also scored a 53 for Head Coach Kevin St. Pierre’s squad.

The following day, North Haven took a 197-215 road loss to Coginchaug at Lyman Orchards Golf Course. Sagnella finished with a score of 48 for North Haven. Lawlor (53), Labanara (54), LaDore (60), and Basmadjian (61) rounded out the pack for the Nighthawks.

North Haven finished off its week by taking a 185-206 defeat against East Haven in a road meet at Alling Memorial Golf Club on April 14. Basmadjian recorded the Nighthawks’ low score with a 48 for the round. Sagnella (51), Lawlor (51), Labanara (56), and LaDore (59) also competed in the meet.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team split a pair of recent home games to put its record at 2-3 on the season.

On April 11, North Haven hosted Branford and edged out the Hornets by an 11-10 score for a huge victory. The Nighthawks jumped out to an 8-3 lead at halftime and then held off Branford’s rally in the second half to hang on for the win.

Senior captains Riley Minns, Sophia Dorio, and Shea Saracino all scored 3 goals for North Haven. Senior captain Eliza O’Connor and sophomore Catherine Bianchi added 1 goal apiece. Senior goalie Hannah Sommer made 11 saves in net and also had several solid clears that led to goals for North Haven in transition.

Three days later, the Nighthawks took an 18-9 loss against Sacred Heart Academy in a home game at North Haven Middle School.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team moved to 2-3 after losing two contests last week.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 19-2 road loss to Hand on April 11. Senior Jake Hines and fellow senior Xander Lawless scored North Haven’s goals in the game.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Xavier and lost to the Falcons by the score of 17-8.

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team played three road games last week and came away with one win to put its record at 3-3. The Nighthawks took defeats to Sheehan and Xavier before earning a win over East Haven in recent action.

North Haven started off its week by dropping a 6-4 decision against Sheehan in a road game on April 11. Sheehan scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead s. North Haven cut the deficit to 5-4 by scoring four in the top of the fourth, but the Titans added an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame and went on to get the 6-4 victory.

Senior Mike Anquillare went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and 2 RBI for North Haven. Senior Owen Pincince went 1-for-2 with 2 walks, a run, and an RBI; and fellow senior Anthony Acampora was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Junior Antonio Fusco went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI and also pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing 1 run to go with 3 strikeouts.

Two days later, North Haven traveled to Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford to play Xavier and took a 4-0 loss. Anquillare had 2 hits and drew a walk for North Haven. Pincince allowed 1 run in 3 innings of relief, and junior Jack Martineau tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

In its final game of the week, the Nighthawks claimed a 20-1 road win over East Haven in 5 innings on April 16. Junior Tyler Harger earned the win by allowing 1 run in 3 innings for North Haven. Fusco and senior Chris Tobin each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Senior Sal Giaimo went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI for the Nighthawks. Anquillare was 2-for-4 with a run, two RBI, and a stolen base; Pincince went 1-for-1 with 2 walks, 3 runs, an RBI, and a stolen base; and sophomore Max Cargan went 1-for-1 with a double and 3 runs scored.

Junior Steven Vincent went 1-for-1 with a walk, 3 runs, and an RBI in the victory. Acampora was 1-for-1 with a walk, a run, and 4 RBI; while senior Shaun Murray went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.
