Morgan Golf Squad Picks Up Three Wins; Boys’ Lacrosse Team Defeats Valley

Boys’ Golf

The Morgan boys’ golf team scored three victories last week to improve its record to 4-0 this year. The Huskies earned wins versus Coginchaug, Valley Regional, and Hale-Ray in last week’s matchups.

Morgan claimed a 191-217 road victory over Coginchaug at Lyman Orchards Golf Course on April 11. Sophomore Jack Nye turned in Morgan’s best performance by finishing with a score of 45 for the match. Senior Nicholas Schmidt scored a 47, sophomore CJ Giuliano finished with a 48, and senior Drew Nye posted a score of 51.

The next day, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors by the final score of 174-201 at Clinton Country Club. Giuliano finished with a score of 41 to earn medalist honors for Morgan. Drew Nye scored a 43, Schmidt scored a 44, junior Ray Swan shot a 46, and Jack Nye recorded a score of 49.

Then on April 13, Morgan claimed a 179-196 win against Hale-Ray in another home match. Drew Nye scored a 43 for the Huskies in the victory. Swan scored a 44, Schmidt finished with a 45, and Giuliano turned in a scorecard of 47 for Morgan.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse squad swept a pair of recent contests to move to 3-1 on the year. The Huskies earned a win against Valley Regional before losing to Foran in last week’s matchups.

Morgan started off its week by notching a 12-10 victory at Valley Regional on April 13. Junior Ben McDonnell had 4 goals with 1 assist, while fellow junior Dylan Mazzarella scored 3 goals to go with 4 assists for the Huskies. Sophomore Casey Corrigan scored 3 goals, senior Ethan Madura had 1 goals with 2 assists, and junior Jake Mastriano added a goal in the victory.

The following day, Morgan hosted Foran and took a 10-4 defeat against the Lions. Junior Dylan Mazzarella scored 3 goals for Morgan in its game versus Foran. Senior Ethan Madura scored a goal, while fellow senior Aiden Madura had 2 assists.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Morgan girls’ lacrosse team moved to 0-2 this year after taking a loss to Valley Regional in its lone game of the week. On April 13, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional and lost to the Warriors by the final score of 20-5.

Sophomore Maeve Madura scored 3 goals for the Huskies against Valley Regional. Junior Brooke Carlisle had 1 goal and 2 assists, while sophomore Ava Schmidt scored 1 goal go with 1 assist for Morgan.

Sophomores Emma Campagne and Ashley Reemsnyder both had 1 assist for the Huskies. Junior Marin Stopkoski made 11 saves in net.

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis squad played a pair of road matches last week and came away from the set with split to move to 4-1 on the year.

The Huskies took a 4-3 defeat to Valley Regional in a road match on April 11. Junior Joseph Morse earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match for Morgan. The Huskies’ No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Ryder Watson and freshman Nate Kinser claimed a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win; while the No. 3 team of senior Page Guptill and senior Ryan Mansfield were triumphant by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

On April 16, Morgan traveled to Durham to face Coginchaug and posted a 7-0 shutout in the contest.

Girls’ Tennis

The Morgan girls’ tennis team took a recent home loss against Valley Regional to move to 3-1 on the year. On April 11, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 5-2 decision against the Warriors.

Softball

The Morgan softball team played a trio of road games last week and came away from the stretch with one win for an overall record of 2-5 on the season.

Morgan took a 14-1 loss at North Branford on April 11. Two days later, the Huskies were on the road to face Old Saybrook and won the game by a 13-0 score.

Junior Kacey Edwards struck out 12 batters on her way to earning the win on the mound when Morgan defeated Old Saybrook. Edwards also went 4-for-5 with a double at the dish. Junior Angelina Herbst went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, junior Alyssa Maikowski also went 3-for-4, and junior Maddie O’Sullivan was 2-for-2 with 2 walks and a double in the victory.

On April 16, Morgan played a road game against Old Lyme and took a 6-5 to the Wildcats in 8 innings.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team lost three home games last week to move to 1-7 this year.

On April 11, Morgan took a 6-2 loss to North Branford in a home game. The game was tied 2-2 entering the fifth inning, but the Thunderbirds took a 3-2 lead in that frame and then added a few more runs to get the victory.

Senior Garret Garbinski, senior Brady Fritz, and sophomore Sean Green each had one hit for the Huskies. Morgan’s defense played a solid game and committed no errors in the field. Senior Ethan Reemsnyder had the most chances in the field for Morgan and was successful on all 6 fielding opportunities.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Old Saybrook and lost the Rams by a 3-1 score. Garbinksi took the start on the mound for Morgan and pitched 6 strong innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Morgan went up 1-0 when Reemsnyder hit a solo shot for his second home run of the season in the second inning. However, Old Saybrook scored the last three runs of the game and went on to get the win. Senior Ethan Ranaudo had 3 hits for Morgan in the contest.

The Huskies finished their week by taking an 8-6 home loss versus Old Lyme on April 16. Garbinski went 3-for-3 to lead Morgan at the plate. Reemsnyder also had multiple hits in the contest.
