Hand Boys’ Tennis Runs Record to 5-0; Baseball Team Makes it Five-Straight Victories

Boys’ Tennis

The Hand boys’ tennis team improved to 5-0 by winning all three of its matchups last week. The Tigers notched victories over Amity, Cheshire, and Guilford to make it a clean sweep on the courts.

Hand started off its week by earning a 6-1 road win over Amity on April 11. Senior Sebastian Lowy claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles for the Tigers. Sophomore Elliot Booth posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles; senior Max Gulla won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles; and sophomore Max Vetter netted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the No. 4 singles match.

Hand’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Will deChabert and Will Fumex rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 victory. The No. 2 tandem of seniors Robbie Washburne and Patrick Hennessey won their contest by the score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

On April 13, the Tigers recorded a 6-1 home victory against Cheshire. Lowy (6-4, 6-2), Booth (6-1, 6-1), Gulla (6-1, 6-1), and Vetter (6-0, 6-0) all won their singles matches. The doubles teams of deChabert-Fumex (6-0, 6-0) and Washburne-Hennessey (6-1, 6-0) also won their matches in straight sets. The No. 3 doubles team of senior Ethan Speerli and sophomore Will Dodd notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The next day, Hand claimed a 6-1 win at Guilford. Lowy (6-1, 6-0), Booth (6-0, 6-3), and Gulla (6-1, 6-1) were victorious at the top three singles spots. deChabert and Fumex won a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles; Washburne and Vetter teamed up for a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles; and the team of Xander Konstintino and Gus Hodge earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.

Girls’ Tennis

The Hand girls’ tennis team took three defeats last week and is now 2-3 this season.

The Tigers took a 4-3 road loss to North Haven in their first match of the week on April 11. Senior Clarie Langille earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles match for Hand. The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of senior Breanna Colonese-DiBello and senior Zhu Zhu Berger netted a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win; while the No. 2 team of senior Bella Vejar and junior Libby Rogers won their match by a 6-1, 6-2 score.

On April 13, Hand took a 7-0 defeat at Amity. The following day, the Tigers hosted Stonington and lost the contest by a 5-2 final.

Colonese-DiBello and Berger notched a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles versus Stonington. Vejar and Rogers posted a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Baseball

The Hand baseball team won both of its games last week to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Tigers earned recent victories against West Haven and Conard and have now won five in a row.

Hand began last week by claiming a 7-5 win at West Haven on April 13. Senior David Antonetti pitched 5 innings to earn his second win of the year for the Tigers. Sophomore Johnny Reh threw the final two frames to get the save.

Senior Jeff Pinover hit a two-run double to spur the Tigers’ offense. Senior Will Kranzler had an RBI single, and sophomore Ben Kuja was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The day after that, Hand hosted Conard and notched a 10-6 victory in the non-conference contest. Trailing 6-3 after four innings, Hand scored 4 runs in the fifth inning and added 3 more runs in the sixth inning to come away with the victory.

Senior Axl Pildner hit a bases-loaded triple that drove home all 3 runs in the sixth. Senior Connor Powell went 3-for-4, and Pinover was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Sophomore Brandon SanMarco tossed 4 innings of relief to picked up the win for Head Coach Travis LaPointe’s club.

Softball

The Hand softball squad split a pair of contests last week to move to 4-1 on the year.

Hand took a 12-0 road loss against East Haven on April 11. Senior Megan Hart had a double for the Tigers in the game.

Two days later, the Tigers hosted North Haven and claimed a 4-2 win over the Nighthawks. Freshman Grace Hall pitched a complete game to get the win on the mound for Hand. Hall pitched 7 innings for the victory, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk to go with 6 strikeouts.

Freshman Izzy Bowler went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace the Tigers’ offense. Freshman Alexa Young went 2-for-4 with a run scored; and Hart was 1-for-3 with a run, a triple, and 2 RBI. Hand committed no errors on defense in the victory. Junior Annie Goodrich led the Tigers with 7 successful chances in the field.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ outdoor track team earned a sweep when it hosted a tri-meet against Fairfield Prep and Xavier last week. The Tigers claimed a 94-56 victory over Xavier and posted a 109-38 win versus Fairfield Prep on April 12.

Senior Mario Mazzarella claimed first place in the discus (102-9) and the shot put (40-3) for the Tigers. Senior Jacob McGeary took first place in the 110 hurdles (15.8) and the 300 hurdles (44.9).

Hand also received first-place finishes from sophomore Kyle Hoffman in the 400 (51.4), senior Nick Montana in the 800 (2:08.1), and junior Harrison Grenier in the 3,200 (9:41.9). Additionally grabbing victories were senior Ethan O’Brien in the long jump (20-0), sophomore Matt Kasper in the triple jump (42-3), and senior Morgan Veth in the high jump (6-0).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Hand girls’ outdoor track team took two defeats when it hosted a tri-meet against Lauralton Hall and Mercy on April 11. The Tigers took a 73-52 loss to Lauralton Hall and lost to Mercy by the score of 74-59 at the meet.

Senior Riley Caruso earned first place in the pole vault for Hand. Caruso cleared 7 feet on her way to winning the pole vault at the meet.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Hand girls’ lacrosse team improved to 3-2 after winning the lone game on last week’s schedule. On April 12, the Tigers hosted Glastonbury and won the matchup by a 7-5 score at the Surf Club.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Hand boys’ lacrosse team split a pair of games last week and is now 3-1 on the year.

Hand posted a 19-2 home victory versus North Haven at the Surf Club on April 11. Senior Mikey McGuirk and junior Will Kleine both scored 4 goals for the Tigers. Junior Sam Sisk had 3 goals with 3 assists. Senior Kevin Sandor had 2 goals and 2 assists, while junior Spiro Maniatis and freshman PJ O’Hanlon each had 1 goal with 2 assists.

Senior Patch Flanagan had a goal with an assist for Hand in the victory. Junior Alex Cushing and junior John Hayden both scored a goal, and senior Wyatt Marcous added an assist. Sophomore Jack Orlando made 6 saves in net for the Tigers.

On April 14, Hand took an 18-5 road loss to Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University.

Boys’ Golf

The Hand boys’ golf team took defeats in its first two matchups of the 2022 season last week. The Tigers lost road contests against Shelton and Fairfield Week during the opening week of their campaign.

On April 13, Hand took a 172-173 road loss to Shelton at Highland Golf Club. Junior Reece Scott finished with a score of 41 for the Tigers. Senior David Ginsburg shot a 42, while junior Matt Gagliardi and sophomore Kasimir Lesnik both posted a score of 45.

The next day, the Tigers played a road match versus Fairfield Prep and took a 154-178 defeat at the Country Club of Fairfield. Gagliardi (43), Scott (45), Ginsburg (49), and freshman Matt McManus (49) competed for Hand in the match.

Jim Holleran returns for another season as Hand’s head coach. Last year, the Tigers finished with a record of 15-0, took second place at SCCs, and then won their second-straight state title with a first-place finish at the Division II State Championship.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Hand boys’ volleyball team took two defeats last week to move to 1-5 on the season.

On April 11, Hand took a 3-0 road loss to Shelton. Two days later, the Tigers hosted Xavier and lost to the Falcons by a 3-1 final.
