Guilford Girls’ Lacrosse Defeats Simsbury for Fourth-Straight Victory; Boys’ Lacrosse Notches Win Versus Amity

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team played two road games last week and came away with a pair of wins to improve to 4-1 this season. The Grizzlies earned recent victories versus Amity and Simsbury and have now won four games in a row.

On April 12, Guilford claimed a 16-5 victory over Amity in a road game. Then on April 16, the Grizzlies were back on the road to face Simsbury and notched a 12-5 win in the contest.

Senior Maddie Epke scored 5 goals to go with 2 assists when the Grizzlies defeated Simsbury. Sophomore Payton Root had 4 goals in the win. Junior MJ Santa Barbara scored 2 goals, and fellow junior Ella Clarke added 1 goal.

Senior goalie Sydney Widlitz made 9 saves for Guilford in net. Juniors Kat Baseggio and Scout Climie played lockdown defense to help the Grizzlies get the win.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse squad moved to 4-1 on the year after splitting a pair of recent matchups.

The Grizzlies took a 14-6 defeat against Notre Dame-West Haven in a road game on April 11. Three days later, Guilford hosted Amity and notched a 13-11 victory versus the Spartans.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team improved to 4-1 this year by defeating Cheshire in its lone match of the week. On April 14, the Grizzlies played a road match versus Cheshire and edged out the Rams by the final score of 4-3.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis team won one of its three home matches last week and is now 2-3 on the year.

Guilford began the week by claiming a 6-1 victory versus Xavier in a home match on April 11. Junior Patrick Zhang earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles for the Grizzlies. Senior Dylan Stanton claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles; and senior Luke Robbins won his No. 4 singles contest by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Guilford’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Max Banning and freshman Tomas Kharabadze won a 6-2, 6-4 decision. The No. 2 team of junior Sean Johnson and freshman Vincent Palatiello earned a 6-3, 6-1 win; and the No. 3 team of senior Ben Kellner and senior Nick Meeks posted a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7 victory.

On April 13, Guilford took a 7-0 home loss against Fairfield Prep. The next day, the Grizzlies hosted Hand and lost a 6-1 decision to the Tigers.

Boys’ Golf

The Guilford boys’ golf squad improved to 1-1 on the year by earning a win versus Hamden in its lone match of the week. Guilford claimed a 174-190 road victory over Hamden at Laurel View Golf Course on April 12.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team played three games last week and came away from the slate with one win to put its record at 3-4 on the season.

In its first game of the week, Guilford took a 2-0 home loss to Fairfield Ludlowe on April 11. Junior Sam Ametrano threw a solid game for the Grizzlies, allowing just 1 earned run to go with 5 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched. Senior Mike Torre, senior Tyler Zajkowski, and sophomore Bryce Meder all had a hit for Guilford in the game.

On April 13, the Grizzlies earned a 17-5 road victory against Hillhouse-Career. Ametrano went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while junior Andrew Shosho was 2-for-2 with a double and 4 RBI. Senior Aiden McBrierty, senior Ethan Clark, freshman Lucas Deshefy, and junior Preston Markham combined on the pitching duties for Guilford in the win.

The following day, Guilford took a 5-4 defeat to Cheshire in a road game. Senior Carter Williams hit a two-run home run and had 3 RBI in the contest. Torre, junior Jack Farrah, and junior Brendan Skoglund all had 2 hits.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team traveled to Shelton High School to take on the host Gaels and Lyman Hall for a tri-meet last week. Guilford split the meet by defeating Lyman Hall 101-44 and losing to Shelton 90-51 on April 12, putting the Grizzlies’ record at 2-2 on the season.

Senior Julia Antony finished first in the 800 (2:27.5) and the 1,600 (5:28.6), while freshman Riley Hickey took first place in the 200 (28.2) and the 400 (61.7) for Guilford. Junior Olivia Kaisin won the 3,200 in 11:51.3 and was followed across the finish line by junior Alexa Suchy (12:11) and sophomore Clara Gahm (12:19). Senior Rachel Ellison won the javelin with a season-best throw of 92-7.

Senior Francesca Meneo took second in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 26-2. Sophomore Ella Young recorded a personal best of 15-7.5 in the long jump to claim second place and also finished third in the 300 hurdles at 55.9. Junior Clara Laughlin finished third in the 800 (2:48), and junior Ella Esposito placed third for the high jump (4-6).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team competed against Shelton and Lyman Hall in a tri-meet at Shelton High School on April 12. The Grizzlies gained a split by earning a 74-63 win over Lyman Hall and taking a 97-44 loss to Shelton to move to 2-2 on the year.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of junior Mike Masotti, senior Thomas Gregory, junior Zachary Pawelek, and senior Justin Shiffrin took first place (8:39.2) at the meet; and the 4x400 relay of freshman Max Freeman, Shiffrin, senior Cal Stephens, and Gregory also finished in first place (3:36.6). Gregory also ran his way to first place in the 400 (52.7) for the Grizzlies.

Guilford was additionally bolstered by second-place performances from sophomore Andres Gutierrez in the triple jump (38-6.75), freshman Max Freeman in the high jump (5-2), and Stephens in the 200 (23.6) at the meet. Also placing second were Pawelek in the 800 (2:10.7), Shiffrin in the 1,600 (4:38.1), and sophomore Alex Hansen for the 3,200 (10:29).

The Grizzlies were also bolstered by solid performances from Gutierrez in the 110 hurdles (18.9), junior Mike O’Brien in the shot put (34-11) and the 200 (25.6), sophomore George Wiley in the javelin (104-9), sophomore Aidan Soper in the long jump (15-3.75) and triple jump (32-6.75), sophomore Colin Cassar in the javelin (94-8), and freshman Kian Pixton in the triple jump (31-3.5). Head Coach George Cooskey also noted that Guilford saw strong showings from junior Joshua Chen in the 100 (12.2) and 200 (24.3), sophomore Cayden Diaz in the 400 (61.2), sophomore Mackinley Cho in the 800 (2:12), Masotti in the 1,600 (4:39.1), and sophomore Coleman Love in the 3,200 (10:36.4).
