Easties Improve to 5-1 with Three-Win Week; Tennis Squads Notch First Victories

Softball

The East Haven softball team played four games last week and came away with three victories to improve to 5-1 in the 2022 spring season. The Yellowjackets, who are also 4-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division, notched wins over Hand, Hamden, and Foran to go with a loss against Amity in recent action.

On April 11, East Haven hosted Hand and claimed a 12-0 victory in 6 innings. Senior Emilee Bishop pitched 5 innings and allowed just 1 hit to go with 10 strikeouts for the Yellowjackets. Bishop also hit a home run, freshman Alexa Heaphy had 2 home runs, and senior Jilien Ayala also homered for East Haven.

The next day, the Yellowjackets took a 1-0 loss to Amity in a home game. The Spartans scored the lone run of the game in the first inning on their way to the victory. Bishop allowed 4 hits and had 9 strikeouts for East Haven.

The day after that, the Easties hit the road to play Hamden and claimed a 10-5 win. Junior Lily Gagnon pitched the first 5 innings to earn the win for East Haven, striking out 7. Bishop threw the final 2 frames and struck out 4 to notch the save. Sophomore Gianna Fowler had 4 hits, including a pair of home runs; and Bishop had 3 hits, one of which was a homer. Heaphy and junior Gianna Bernovich also had 3 hits with Ayala and senior Lena Barthel adding 2 hits apiece.

Then on April 16, East Haven closed out its week by claiming a 10-1 win at Foran. Bishop tossed a five-hitter with 7 strikeouts for the Yellowjackets and also had a double and a triple at the plate. Ayala, Fowler, Heaphy, and junior Arielle Dupree each had 2 hits in the victory. Fowler, Dupree, Heaphy, and Barthel all hit a double for Head Coach Ed Crisafi’s club.

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team took three defeats last week to put its record at 1-4 on the season. The Yellowjackets took losses against Fairfield Prep, Foran, and North Haven in last week’s matchups.

East Haven took an 11-1 defeat to Fairfield Prep in a road game at Fairfield University on April 11. Two days later, the Yellowjackets hosted Foran and dropped a 3-2 decision. Then on April 16, the Easties played a home game against North Haven and took a 20-1 loss to the Nighthawks at East Haven High School.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team earned its first victory of the season by winning a close contest against Lyman Hall last week. The Yellowjackets went on to take a loss to West Haven for an overall record of 1-2 on the year.

East Haven hosted Lyman Hall on April 12 and came away with a 4-3 win for its first win this spring. Junior Sydney Herard notched a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match for the Yellowjackets in the contest.

The Easties swept doubles play on their way to the victory. East Haven’s No. 1 team of senior Camryn Lendroth and senior Karlee Win earned a 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 win; the No. 2 duo of senior Carole Tapia and sophomore Alyson Alberino notched a 6-2, 6-2 win; and the No. 3 team of junior Diya Patel and sophomore Melania Korenovsky netted a 6-2, 7-6 victory to help Head Coach Anthony Perrotti’s squad emerge victorious. Perrotti is taking the reins as head coach of the East Haven girls’ tennis program after having coached the boys’ team for the past several seasons.

On April 14, the Yellowjackets played a road match against West Haven and dropped a 5-2 contest against the Blue Devils.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team picked up its first win of the year by defeating Career last week. The Yellowjackets also took losses against Hamden and West Haven to put their overall record at 1-3 this season.

On April 11, the Easties hosted Career and netted a 4-3 victory over the Panthers for their first win with new Head Coach Jacob Callahan. The following day, East Haven played a road match against Hamden and took a 7-0 defeat.

The day after that, the Yellowjackets were on the road to face West Haven and took a 6-1 loss. Senior Thanh Ngo and junior Shiv Patel earned an 8-6, 4-6, 10-7 victory in the No. 1 doubles match for East Haven.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track team earned a split when the Yellowjackets hosted a tri-meet versus North Haven and Sheehan on April 12. The Easties claimed a 77-69 victory over North Haven and took a 114-35 loss to Sheehan in the meet at East Haven High School.

Junior Alice Stettinger finished first in the javelin with a throw of 113 feet-2 inches for the Yellowjackets. Stettinger also won the shot put by recording a distance of 34 feet-1.5 inches. Senior Morgan D’Auria earned top honors in the triple jump by reaching 34 feet for East Haven.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track team hosted a tri-meet against North Haven and Sheehan on April 12. The Yellowjackets took two defeats by losing to both North Haven (127-33) and Sheehan (93-66) at the meet.

Junior Dominic Salato took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet-8 inches for the Easties. Salato also finished first in the javelin by launching a throw of 139 feet-1 inch.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team played three matches last week and came away with one victory to move to 2-2 on the season. The Yellowjackets took losses against Branford and Jonathan Law before finishing the week with a win over North Haven.

On April 11, East Haven took a 175-200 defeat to Branford in a home match at Alling Memorial Golf Club. Senior Nick Sorrentino shot a 48 for the Yellowjackets. Junior Domenic Plano scored a 49, senior Ethan Roach finished with a 50, and sophomore Mike Savo recorded a score of 53.

The next day, East Haven took a 205-216 road loss to Jonathan Law at Orange Hills Country Club. Roach finished with the Easties’ best score by shooting a 49 for the afternoon. Plano (52), Sorrentino (53), and senior Norah Rome (62) also competed for the Yellowjackets.

Then on April 14, East Haven hosted North Haven and notched a 185-206 victory against the Nighthawks. Sorrentino earned medalist honors by posting a low score of 41 at the match. Roach was next in line with a 42, while Plano and Savo both shot a 51 in the win.
