Yellowjackets Rally for Big Win Over Cheshire; Golf Team Starts Season with a Victory

Softball

The East Haven softball team earned a win versus Cheshire in a matchup of two squads ranked in the top 10 in Connecticut last week. On April 4, the 8th-ranked Yellowjackets faced No. 9 Cheshire on the road and prevailed by a 5-2 score to improve to 2-0 on the year.

East Haven was trailing Cheshire 2-1 entering the top of the seventh inning, but plated four runs in the frame to come away with the win. Senior Emilee Bishop hit a three-run home run to put the Easties ahead in the seventh.

Bishop, who also had homered earlier in the game, finished the day 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Bishop also pitched a complete-game, six-hitter with 4 strikeouts to lead the Yellowjackets to their first victory versus Cheshire since 2014.

Junior Arielle Dupree drew a walk to start off the seventh inning for East Haven and later scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly by junior Lily Gagnon. Junior Adriana Franceschi then drew a walk and advanced to second on a two-out single by senior Jilien Ayala, after which both runners scored on Bishop’s tie-breaking, three-run blast.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team kicked off its season with a win over Foran last week. On April 5, the Easties hosted Foran at Alling Memorial Golf Club and notched a 194-206 victory for a 1-0 start to the year.

Senior Ethan Roach and fellow senior Nick Sorrentino shared medalist honors for the Yellowjackets with both golfers scoring a 46 for the day. Sophomore Mike Savo shot a 48, while junior Domenic Plano finished with a score of 54 for East Haven in the win.

Rick Narracci is back for another year as East Haven’s head coach. The Yellowjackets went 7-7 and qualified for the Division II State Championship in 2021.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis squad played its first match with new Head Coach Jacob Callahan last week. The Yellowjackets took a 6-1 home loss to Wilbur Cross in their season opener at East Haven High School on April 5.

East Haven posted an overall record of 8-9 and qualified for states for the first time in 13 years last season.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team hosted Hamden for its first matchup of the 2022 season last week. The Yellowjackets took a 7-0 defeat to the Green Dragons at East Haven High School on April 4.

The Yellowjackets finished with a record of 4-12 in the 2021 campaign.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team played three games last week and came away with one win to move to 1-3 on the year. Bfd-EH earned a win versus West Haven before losing to Amity and North Haven in recent action.

Bfd-EH started off its week by claiming a 12-5 home victory versus West Haven on April 5. Junior Sean Bosworth scored 4 goals in the win, while senior Cam Paleski, senior Kevin Lee, and freshman Gennaro Pompano netted 2 goals apiece. Pompano also had 2 assists. Junior Matt McNulty and freshman Alex Dombrowski added 1 goal apiece. Senior goalie Aidan Strebel made 12 saves in net to help Bfd-EH get the victory.

Two days later, Bfd-EH hosted Amity and took an 8-5 defeat against the Spartans. McNulty scored 2 goals, while Paleski, Pompano, and junior Alex Milne each scored 1 goal. Paleski and Pompano both had 1 assist. Strebel made 13 saves.

Then on April 9, Bfd-EH played a road game versus North Haven and took a 4-3 loss to the Nighthawks. McNulty, Dombrowski, and sophomore Gavin Groves scored the goals for Bfd-EH, while Lee had an assist in the game. Strebel stopped 16 shots in net.
