Morgan Tennis Off to Strong Start on the Court; Several Other Teams Notch Victories

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team is off to a 3-0 start after winning its first three matches of the spring season last week. The Huskies posted victories against East Hampton, Portland, and Haddam- Killingworth during the first week of play.

Morgan notched a 5-2 home win over East Hampton in its season opener on April 4. Junior Joseph Morse clamed a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles for the Huskies. Junior Steven Kinser netted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles; and junior Matt Lopez prevailed by a 6-4, 6-1 score in the No. 3 singles match.

Morgan’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Tarik Hasic and Damian Sevieri netted a 6-0, 6-4 win. The No. 3 tandem of senior Page Guptill and senior Ryan Mansfield gutted out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory for Morgan.

The next day, the Huskies hosted Portland and blanked the Highlanders by a 7-0 score. Morse (6-1, 6-0), Kinser (6-2, 6-2), and Lopez (6-1, 6-0) were victorious on the singles court for Morgan. Hasic and Sevieri claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win in their contest.

Morgan wrapped up the week by earning a 6-1 home victory against H-K on April 8. Morse (6-2, 6-0) and Lopez (6-3, 6-2) won their singles matchups for the Huskies. Morgan’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Nick Bausch and senior Damian Sevieri claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory; and the No. 2 duo of sophomore Ryder Watson and freshman Nate Kinser triumphed by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

Morgan is coming off of a season that saw the Huskies finish with a record of 6-10. Eric Carroll is the head coach of the Huskies.

Girls’ Tennis

The Morgan girls’ tennis squad won its first three matchups of the 2022 campaign for a 3-0 start to the year. The Huskies defeated East Hampton, Portland, and Haddam- Killingworth last week.

On April 4, Morgan posted a 5-2 home victory over East Hampton. Junior Ana Colebank won a 6-4, 6-4 decision in the No. 3 singles match for the Huskies; and sophomore Riley Schmidt earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

Morgan’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kyra Savage and Maddie O’Donnell claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win; while the No. 2 duo of sophomores Ava Johnson and Ainsley Corgan recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The following afternoon, the Huskies hosted Portland and won the contest by a 6-1 score. Sophomore Molly Vitola notched a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 2 singles match. Colebank won a three-setter the final tally of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4; and Schmidt was a 6-1, 6-2 victor for Morgan.

On the doubles court, the team of Savage and O’Donnell netted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top spot. Sara Morrissey and fellow sophomore Gavin Gerez posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.

Morgan closed out the week by earning a 6-1 road win versus H-K on April 8. Vitola (6-4, 6-3), Colebank (6-4, 6-2), and Schmidt (6-2, 6-2) were all victorious in singles action for Head Coach Larry Chapman’s squad.

Savage and O’Donnell notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles; while Johnson and Corgan picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Last year, Morgan finished with a record of 11-7 and qualified for the Class S State Tournament, winning a first-round match in the draw.

Boys’ Golf

The Morgan boys’ golf team claimed a road win versus Cromwell in its opening match of the season last week. On April 7, the Huskies traveled to Cromwell to face the Panthers and squeaked out a 176-177 victory at TPC River Highlands.

Sophomore CJ Giuliano led the way for Morgan by scoring a 39 for the round. Senior Nicholas Schmidt shot a 43, senior Cole Crowley finished with a 45, and senior Drew Nye scored a 49 to help the Huskies defeat the Panthers.

Eric Bergman returns for another year as Morgan’s head coach. The Huskies finished with a record of 11-7 and then came in third place at the Shoreline Conference Championship last season.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team split a pair of contests during the first week of its season. The Huskies took a loss to Haddam-Killingworth before bouncing back with a win against Old Lyme to open the year at 1-1.

Morgan took a 5-1 home loss to Haddam-Killingworth in its season opener on April 5. Two days later, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and edged out the Wildcats by a 7-6 score to get their first win on the year.

Dennis Forbes is the head coach of Morgan boys’ lacrosse this season. Morgan finished with a record of 6-10 last year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Morgan girls’ lacrosse team took defeats in its first two matchups of the 2022 season. The Huskies dropped contests against Haddam- Killingworth and Old Lyme during the opening week of action.

On April 4, Morgan took a 10-7 loss at H-K in its first game. Junior Brooke Carlisle had 3 goals and 3 assists for the Huskies, while sophomore Maeve Madura scored 3 goals to go with 2 assists and 5 draw controls. Sophomore Ava Schmidt scored a goal, and senior Julia Tanner had an assist. Junior goalie Marin Stopkoski made 10 saves in net for Morgan.

Three days later, the Huskies faced Old Lyme on the road and were edged out by a 7-6 score. Carlisle scored 4 goals and also had 3 assists with 2 draw controls in the contest. Senior Alexis Shields had a goal and an assist, Schmidt scored a goal, and senior Cailan Steahle had an assist. Madura had 2 draw controls for the Huskies. Stopkoski made 6 saves in goal.

Bill Lindsay returns for another season as Morgan’s head coach. Last year, the Huskies went 9-10 on their way to qualifying for Shorelines and states.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team won one of its four games last week to move to 1-4 on the season. The Huskies lost contests against Valley Regional, Cromwell, and Bacon Academy to go with a win over Haddam-Killingworth in last week’s action.

On April 4, Morgan took a 7-5 home loss against Valley Regional. The next day, Morgan faced Cromwell on the road and lost the game by a 9-3 score.

Then on April 8, the Huskies claimed a 4-3 win at Haddam-Killingworth. Senior Garret Garbinski pitched a complete game with 6 strikeouts for Morgan. Garbinski also drove home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to put the Huskies up 4-3.

The next day, Morgan took a 9-2 home loss against Bacon Academy. Seniors Bailey Goss and Brady Fritz both had 2 hits for Morgan in the game.

Softball

The Morgan softball squad moved to 1-3 this year after losing three recent matchups. Morgan took defeats against Valley Regional, Cromwell, and Haddam-Killingworth on the ballfield last week.

The Huskies lost to Valley Regional by a 17-7 score in a road game on April 4. The following afternoon, Morgan was on the road to face Cromwell and took a 12-0 loss in the contest. On April 8, Morgan hosted H-K and took a 15-2 defeat to the Cougars.
