H-K Softball Notches Three Wins on the Ballfield; Lacrosse Squads Off to Solid Starts

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team improved to 4-0 on the season after winning all three of its games on last week’s schedule. The Cougars claimed victories versus North Branford, Valley Regional, and Morgan to stay undefeated on the campaign.

H-K started off its week by earning a 9-2 win versus North Branford in a home game on April 4. Junior Kaleigh Bodak pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts for H-K in the victory. Sophomore Cheyenne LaTouche went 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, and sophomore Annabelle Zajac was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, 2 runs, and 3 RBI for the Cougars. Sophomore Keira Czarkowski had 2 RBI, and sophomore Bella LaTorre had a double with an RBI.

The next day, H-K hosted Valley Regional and notched a 5-0 shutout over the Warriors. Bodak allowed just 1 hit to go with 11 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched for the Cougars. Sophomore Brooke Hickman also pitched an inning.

Zajac went 2-for-2 with 3 runs scored, and LaTorre was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Cougars. Sophomore Ivy McNeil also had an RBI for H-K.

The Cougars wrapped up their week by claiming a 15-2, 5-inning road win versus Morgan on April 8. Hickman went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, a run scored, and 5 RBI for H-K. Czarkowski went 3-for-4 with 3 runs and an RBI; Zajac was 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 doubles, a run, and 3 RBI; Bodak went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs, and an RBI; and McNeil was 2-for-3 with a walk, 3 runs, and an RBI.

Bodak threw 4 innings and struck out 8 batters to earn in the win in the circle. Sophomore Bella Richwine also pitched an inning for H-K.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse team won its first two games of the season to begin the year with a record of 2-0. H-K defeated Morgan and Valley Regional on the road during the opening week of its spring campaign,

The Cougars claimed a 5-1 road win versus Morgan in their first matchup of the year on April 5. Two days later, H-K traveled to Deep River to play Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors by a 6-1 score in a rematch of last year’s Shoreline Conference final.

Fred Frederico begins his first year as the head coach of H-K boys’ lacrosse. Last season, the Cougars finished with a record of 14-6 and claimed their first Shoreline Conference title in school history. H-K notched an 11-9 victory against Valley Regional in the conference final before advancing to the quarterfinals of the Class S State Tournament.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The H-K girls’ lacrosse team began its spring season by earning a victory versus Morgan last week. On April 4, the Cougars hosted Morgan and defeated the Huskies by the final score of 10-7 at H-K High School.

Sheila Reilly is H-K’s coach for the 2022 season. The Cougars finished with a record of 4-10 in the 2021 campaign.

Boys’ Tennis

The H-K boys’ tennis team won one of its three matches during the first week of its spring season. The Cougars defeated Portland before losing contests against Valley Regional and Morgan last week.

On April 4, H-K hosted Portland and posted a 6-0 shutout in its season opener. The next day, the Cougars took a 6-1 home loss to Valley Regional.

Then on April 8, H-K was back on the road to face Morgan and lost the match by a 6-1 score. Sophomore captain Eddie White notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 singles match for the Cougars.

Rod Pakus is back for another season as H-K’s head coach. The Cougars finished with a record of 6-11 last year.

Girls’ Tennis

The H-K girls’ tennis team took three home losses in the first week of the 2022 season. The Cougars lost matches against Portland, Valley Regional, and Morgan for an 0-3 start to the year.

H-K took a 5-2 loss to Portland in a home match on April 4. The following day, H-K hosted Valley Regional and lost the match by a 7-0 score. On April 8, the Cougars took a 6-1 loss versus Morgan at H-K High School.

The Cougars went 7-10 for the 2021 season. Donna Clark returns as H-K’s head coach this year.
