Grizzlies Pick Up Plenty of Victories with Spring Season in Full Swing

Softball

The Guilford softball team is 2-1 to start its season after winning two of its three games during the first week of play. The Grizzlies took a loss to Hand before earning victories over Hamden and Wilbur Cross last week.

Guilford dropped an 8-6 decision against Hand at home in its first game of the year on April 4. Senior Allie Petonito went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Addie Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, while freshman Ella Munson was 3-for-4 with a double. Sophomore Sophia Meade pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts for Guilford.

Two days later, Guilford posted a 6-2 road victory versus Hamden. Meade struck out 16 hitters on her way to notching the win on the mound. Senior Ava Singleton and junior Charlotte Martocci each hit a triple to aid the Grizzlies’ offense. Singleton, sophomore Addie Smith, and freshman Ella Munson all had a pair of hits.

On April 8, Guilford earned a road win against Wilbur Cross. Sophomore Adrianna Piascik pitched 4 innings with 6 strikeouts for the Grizzlies. Martocci and Smith each had three hits at the plate.

Meghan Wiese is back for another season as the head coach of the Guilford softball squad. The Grizzlies finished with a record of 7-11 in the 2021 campaign.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team won two of its three matches last week to improve its record to 3-1 on the season. Guilford posted wins against North Haven and Lauralton Hall to go with a loss versus Hand in last week’s contests.

Guilford started off its week by earning a 4-3 home victory versus North Haven on April 4. Junior captain Riley Mullett claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 1 singles match for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Molly Peterson notched a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles match.

Guilford’s No. 1 doubles team of freshman Caroline Hergan and freshman Peyton Lynch won a 6-3, 6-1 decision. The No. 3 doubles team of junior Kate DeAngelo and sophomore Alexie Gipson rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory to help Guilford come away with the one-point win.

The next day, Guilford played a road match against Hand and took a 4-3 defeat to the Tigers. Peterson earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while freshman Sophie Gochman claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. The Grizzlies’ No. 3 doubles team of Gipson and sophomore Gabby Kellner won their match by the final tally of 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

Then on April 8, Guilford hosted Lauralton Hall and recorded a 5-2 victory over the Crusaders. Sophomore Kallie Kagan claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles for the Grizzlies. Peterson (6-0, 6-0) and Gochman (6-1, 6-0) prevailed at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.

On the doubles court, Guilford’s No. 2 team of Kellner and junior Izzy Bowman won a 6-4, 7-5 decision. DeAngelo and Gipson posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis team split a pair of road matchups during the first week of the 2022 campaign. The Grizzlies posted a win over Cheshire and then took a defeat to Amity to begin the year with a 1-1 record.

On April 4, Guilford played a road match against Cheshire and edged out the Rams by a 4-3 score. Junior Patrick Zhang earned a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory for Guilford in the No. 3 singles match. The Grizzlies No. 1 doubles team of junior Max Banning and freshman Tomas Kharabadze netted a 6-0, 6-1 win; the No. 2 duo of senior Dylan Stanton and junior Sean Johnson notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory; and the No. 3 tandem of senior Jay Patel and senior Ben Kellner claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win to lift Guilford to the narrow victory.

Then on April 8, Guilford faced Amity on the road and took a 6-1 loss to the Spartans. Guilford’s No. 2 doubles team of Banning and Kharabadze recorded a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the contest.

Paul Malafronte returns for another season as the head coach of Guilford boys’ tennis. The Grizzlies finished with a record of 9-9 on their way to qualifying for the SCC Division I Tournament and the Class L State Tournament last year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team played three games during the first week of the spring season and came away from the slate with two victories. Guilford took a loss to Wilton before earning wins versus Hand and Fairfield Ludlowe for a 2-1 start to the campaign.

The Grizzlies took a 20-11 defeat at Wilton in their season opener on April 5. Senior captain Taylor Farace and sophomore Payton Root both scored 3 goals in the game. Senior captain Maddie Epke had 2 goals and 7 assists. Senior captain Lorelei King scored 2 goals, and junior MJ Santa Barbara added a goal.

On April 7, the Grizzlies hosted Hand and won the game by the final score of 13-7 at Guilford High School. Epke had 5 goals with 3 assists, and Root also netted 5 goals for Guilford in the victory. Farace scored 2 goals, while Santa Barbara had 1 goal with 1 assist.

Two days later, Guilford took on Fairfield Ludlowe for another home game and notched a 12-11 overtime victory versus the Falcons. Santa Barbara netted the game-winning goal in OT for the Grizzlies.

Root scored 5 goals for Guilford in the win, while Epke, Farace, and Santa Barbara had 2 goals apiece. Junior Kat Baseggio added a goal for the Grizzlies. Senior captain goalkeeper Sydney Widlitz was in net for all three of Guilford’s games on the week.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse squad won two road games last week to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Grizzlies picked up a victory over Jonathan Law before defeating Joel Barlow in recent action.

Guilford was on the road to face Jonathan Law on April 7 and won the contest by an 18-2 score. Two days later, the Grizzlies traveled to Redding to take on Joel Barlow and claimed a 6-3 victory in the game.

Boys’ Golf

The Guilford boys’ golf team played a road match versus Xavier to begin the spring season last week. The Grizzlies took a 171-175 defeat to the Falcons in the match at Portland Golf Course on April 4.

Senior captain Miguel Pearce turned in Guilford’s low score of the day by shooting a 41 against Xavier. Freshman Andrew Beauton was next on the board by finishing with a score of 42. Senior Owen Angkatavanich and junior Aidan Webster both scored a 46 for the Grizzlies.

Dave Esteban returns for another season as Guilford’s head coach. Last year, Guilford posted an overall record of 6-8 before finishing seventh at the SCC Championship and 17th at the Division II State Championship.

Crew

The Guilford crew program hosted East Lyme for a Saturday morning matchup on the waters of Lake Quonnipaug on April 9. The Grizzlies’ boys’ and girls’ teams both took defeats against the Vikings at the meet.

The boys’ varsity crews raced first. Trailing by a half boat length midway through the race, Guilford stormed back and placed less than a second behind East Lyme in an exciting finish. In the girls’ varsity race, East Lyme won the race by a few boat lengths. East Lyme also defeated Guilford in the second varsity and novice races.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track squad competed against two teams in a tri-meet at Cheshire High School last week and came away with a split at the competition. Guilford earned an 80-61 win versus Cheshire and lost to Foran by an 87-61 score on April 6.

Senior Thomas Gregory finished first in the 800 (2:04.7) for the Grizzlies at their season-opening meet. Junior captain Michael Masotti took first place in the 1,600 (4:44), and senior captain Justin Shiffrin won the 3,200 (10:24.5). Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of Masotti, Gregory, junior Bretton Garrick, and Shiffrin finished in first place.

Shiffrin also placed second in the 1,600 with sophomore Coleman Love finishing in third. Masotti claimed second place in the 3,200 and was followed by sophomore Connor Pensa in third.

Sophomore Andres Gutierrez finished second in the 110 hurdles (19.74), the 300 hurdles (49.3), and the triple jump (35-5) for Guilford. The Grizzlies’ 4x100 relay team of freshman Max Freeman, senior Cal Stephens, sophomore Aidan Soper, and junior Mike O’Brien finished in second place (48.5).

O’Brien also took second in the shot put (34-4) and was third in the 100 (12.0). Stephens finished second in the 200 (24.2), and Freeman claimed second place in the high jump (5-0) for Head Coach George Cooksey’s club.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track season began its season by splitting a tri-meet at Cheshire High School on April 6. The Grizzlies earned a 112-34 victory over Foran and took a 97-48 loss to Cheshire to start the year at 1-1.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Clara Gahm, junior Clara Laughlin, junior Alexa Suchy, and senior captain Julia Antony took first place (10:23.7) at the meet. Antony won the 800 (2:27.1), Suchy finished first for the 1,600 (5:32.1). Senior captain Rachel Ellison won the javelin (84-0), and sophomore Tea Davison finished first in the long jump (13-1) for Head Coach Jon Rivera’s squad.

Gahm finished second (5:32.3) in the 1,600 with junior Olivia Kaisin placing third (5:33) in the event. Freshman Riley Hickey finished second in the 400 (66.4) for the Grizzlies.

On April 9, Guilford sent several athletes to compete at the Hammonasset Freshman Invitational at Daniel Hand High School. Hickey finished first in the 200 (28.65) and the 400 (62.21) for Guilford. Freshman Agnes Batters won the 300 hurdles (54.03) and took second in the 100 hurdles (20.94). Freshman Jordan Gould finished first in the triple jump (26-4) and was second in the long jump (12-5). Freshman Ana Sadlon took second in the javelin (48-10), and freshman Abby Williams finished second in the 100 hurdles (20.97).
