T-Birds’ Girls’ Lacrosse Begins with Win; Baseball Takes Defeat

Girls’ Lacrosse

One year after winning its third-straight Shoreline Conference title, the North Branford girls’ lacrosse team opened the 2022 season by playing a road game versus Branford last weekend. On April 2, the Thunderbirds squared off against the Hornets at Branford High School and notched an 18-11 victory in the contest.

Senior Braedan LeBeau scored 4 goals to go with 5 assists for North Branford in the victory. Senior Olivia Toto scored 5 goals, senior Marissa Raffone had 3 goals with 1 assist, senior Grace Marra scored 3 goals apiece, and sophomore Keana Criscuolo added 2 goals for the Thunderbirds.

Lori Connelly returns for another season as North Branford’s head coach this spring. The Thunderbirds recorded an overall mark of 15-4 on their way to the Shoreline Conference three-peat last year. North Branford notched a 16-2 win over Morgan in the Shoreline semifinals before defeating Old Saybrook 9-3 in the championship game. The T-Birds then took a 14-10 defeat to Weston in the first round of the Class S State Tournament.

Baseball

The North Branford baseball team began the 2022 spring season by hosting Valley Regional for a Saturday morning matchup on April 2. The Thunderbirds took a 6-5 loss against the Warriors at North Branford High School for an 0-1 start to the campaign.

Billy Mitchell is back on the ballfield for another season as the T-Birds’ head coach this spring. Last year, North Branford finished with an overall record of 12-10 while qualifying for the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class S State Tournament. The T-Birds took a 1-0 loss to Cromwell in the Shoreline quarterfinals, but then came back to claim a 13-7 victory versus Oxford in the first round of states. North Branford went on to take a 4-2 loss to Immaculate in the second round of the Class S bracket.
