Guilford Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ Lacrosse Take Season Openers

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team hit the road to face Waterford for its first matchup of the spring season on April 2. The Grizzlies notched a 6-1 win against the Lancers to begin their year with a record of 1-0.

Chris Marra enters another year as Guilford’s head coach this spring. The Grizzlies recorded an overall record of 13-7 in the 2021 season, qualifying for both the SCC Division I Tournament and the Class L State Tournament. Guilford earned a 6-1 win versus Cheshire in the first round of SCCs before taking a 4-3 loss to Hand in the semifinals. Then in states, the Grizzlies notched a 6-1 victory over Branford in a first-round matchup, after which they dropped a 4-3 decision to North Haven in the quarterfinals.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse squad hosted East Lyme for its season opener last weekend. On April 2, the Grizzlies hosted the Vikings at Guilford High School and triumphed by a 12-9 final in the non-conference contest.

Brian White is back for another season as the Grizzlies’ head coach. Last year, Guilford posted an overall record of 3-12.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team began the 2022 spring season by playing a road game against Branford on April 2. The Grizzlies took a 10-7 loss to the Hornets at Branford High School for an 0-1 start to the campaign.

Nick Merullo returns to the ballfield for his second season as Guilford’s head coach. The Grizzlies finished with a 2-16 record in 2021.

Crew

With chilly temperatures and a 17-mile per hour headwind, the Guilford crew program began its season on a high note by sweeping a meet against Middletown at Lake Quonnipaug on April 3.

In the opening race, the boys’ first varsity eight, featuring senior captains Nicky Amter at stroke and Max Petra in the six seat, defeated Middletown by a little more than two lengths with a time of 5:35.

The girls’ varsity eight raced second and outpaced Middletown for the win with a time of 6:27. Senior Cathlyn Marinis was at stroke, and fellow senior captain Moira McGovern was the coxswain for the Grizzlies.

In the last race of the day, the boys’ second varsity eight claimed a victory by recording a time of 5:49 for the 1,350-meter course
