Branford Baseball Defeats Guilford in Opener; Lacrosse Squads Drop Contests

Baseball

The Branford baseball team hosted Guilford for its 2022 season opener on April 2. The Hornets claimed a 10-7 victory against the Grizzlies at Branford High School to start off the year at 1-0.

Stephen Malafronte returns to the dugout as the head coach of the Branford baseball squad. The Hornets are coming off of a season in which they finished with an overall record of 3-15.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Branford girls’ lacrosse team began its season by hosting North Branford for a Saturday morning matchup on April 2. The Hornets took an 18-11 loss against the Thunderbirds in the contest at Branford High School.

Sophomore Ally Colburn scored 6 goals and had 1 assist for Branford in the game. Junior Jennifer Spencer had 3 goals with 1 assist, senior Nina Shamas handed out 2 assists, and sophomore Raiyn Fries and junior Aurelia Keberle added 1 goal apiece for the Hornets.

Branford enters the season with a new head coach in Caitlin O’Brien. The Hornets are coming off of a 2021 campaign that saw the squad post an overall record of 5-10.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) co-op boys’ lacrosse squad was on the road to face Sheehan for its 2022 season opener last week. On April 2, Bfd-EH traveled to Wallingford to take on the Titans and took an 8-7 loss in the contest.

Bfd-EH is coming off of a season that saw the team finished with a mark of 6-10. Head Coach Jim May’s club qualified for the Class L State Tournament and took a 7-6 loss against Newington in the qualifying round.
