Three Grizzlies’ Teams Take Defeats in States

Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team notched a first-round victory over East Haven before taking a loss to Killingly in the second round of the Division III State Tournament last week. Guilford finished the year with an overall mark of 13-10.

The 13th-seeded Grizzlies hosted No. 20 seed East Haven in the first round of the Division III tourney on March 8. Guilford defeated the Yellowjackets by the final score of 64-38 to advance into the second round.

Junior Riley Swan scored a career-high of 21 points to lead Guilford to the victory. Junior Justin Hess scored 16 points, while fellow junior Luke Ste. Marie had 15 points for the Grizzlies, who sank 13 shots from 3-point range in the win.

On March 11, the Grizzlies were on the road to face No. 4 seed Killingly for a second-round states game. Guilford took a 72-61 defeat against Killingly in what turned out to be the team’s final game of the season.

Hess netted 21 points for Guilford in the game. St. Marie added 10 points on the night.

Girls’ Basketball

After winning their first two games in bracket, the Guilford girls’ basketball team went up against top-seeded Newington in the quarterfinal round of the Class L State Tournament last week. The Grizzlies took a 54-45 loss against Newington to finish with an overall record of 16-9 for the 2022 winter season.

No. 9 seed Guilford hit the road to take on No. 1 seed Newington for a Class L quarterfinal contest on March 10. The Grizzlies lost to Nor’easters by the final score of 54-45 in the matchup at Newington High School. Guilford was up 12-10 after the first quarter and kept the score close most of the way, but ultimately took the nine-point defeat.

Senior captain Faith O’Donnell hit four 3-pointers on her way to scoring 16 points for the Grizzlies in the contest. Senior Lauren Cunneen had 10 points and 5 rebounds, while senior captain Miabella Diaz scored 7 points to go with 6 assists. Freshman Keira Reynolds had 9 points to go with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the Grizzlies. Junior Kat Bassegio grabbed 6 rebounds and handed out 3 assists.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team saw its season come to a close with a loss against Lyman Hall in the first round of the Division II State Tournament last week. The Grizzlies finished their campaign with an overall record of 8-11-2.

On March 7, 15th-seeded Guilford was on the road to face No. 2 seed Lyman Hall in the first round of states at Northford Ice Pavilion. The Grizzlies took a 10-4 defeat versus Lyman Hall and were eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

Guilford trailed 4-1 after the first period and was down 6-3 heading into the third. Lyman Hall then outscored the Grizzlies 4-1 in the final frame to solidify the victory.

Senior captain Mike Torre, junior Will Petrick, junior Gabe Mongelli, and sophomore Jacob Corso scored Guilford’s goals in the game. Junior Leo Hergan had 2 assists for the Grizzlies, while junior Logan Bertrand and freshman Nathan Ponzio recorded 1 assist apiece.
