North Haven Cheer Squad Places 2nd in Class L; Girls’ Hoops Wins States Opener, Loses in Next Round

The North Haven cheerleading team finished in second place at the Class L State Championship that was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on March 5. The Nighthawks posted a team score of 170.30 points on their way to earning runner-up honors at the Class L state meet. Shelton finished in first place with a score of 182.90 points.
Prior to states, North Haven had previously competed in the SCC Championship at East Haven High School on Feb. 5. The Nighthawks took fourth place with 80.05 points scored at SCCs.
The North Haven cheerleading competition team features senior competition captains Isabella Izzo and Maxine Samperri, senior gameday captains Courtney Ciszewski, Rebecca Anastasio, and Arianna Stewart; juniors Vianca Pham, Jenna Roby, and Jazmin Teclechiel; and sophomore Ava Guarniere. The other members of the North Haven cheer squad are Emma Baichulall, Aubrey Bessette, Brooklyn Bonner, Elle Burke, Gianna Carrano-Lanza, Lexy Coppola, Abby Crowder, Jennie DeMennato, Francesca Keefe, Caylin Newson, Kylie Signore, Emily Vece, and Alexa Wargo.
Girls’ Basketball
The North Haven girls’ basketball team won its first-round game versus Naugatuck in the Class L State Tournament before losing to Notre Dame-Fairfield in the second round last week. The Nighthawks finished with an overall record of 10-13 for the winter season.
North Haven was the No. 19 seed in the Class L State Tournament and started off the draw by facing No. 14 Naugatuck on the road in first-round action on March 1. North Haven claimed a 46-40 victory against the Greyhounds to advance into the second round.
On March 4, the Nighthawks hit the road to play No. 3 seed Notre Dame-Fairfield in the second round of the Class L bracket. North Haven took a 59-17 defeat against the Lancers and was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
