GNH Warriors Take 3rd Place at SCC Championship

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors co-op boys' swimming and diving team put forth a stellar third-place performance at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship last week. Led by a pair of victories from East Haven junior Brendan Conners, the Warriors scored 822 points on their way to finishing third when the SCC meet took place at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) on March 2. Fairfield Prep finished in first place by scoring 1,007 points, and Xavier came in second place with 957 points.

Conners claimed first place in the 200 individual medley for the second-straight season at SCCs by winning the event at this year's championship. Conners swam a time of 1:55.57 to finish ahead of senior Mitchell Wollen of Xavier (1:56.67) for top honors in the event. Conners also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.52 seconds, edging out Fairfield Prep freshman Owen Tharrington (51.70) for first place.

GNH's 200 freestyle relay of Conners, Guilford sophomore William Cong, Guilford junior Aiden Cohen, and East Haven senior Hethon Foster took second place (1:28.62) at the SCC Championship. The Warriors' 400 freestyle relay of Cohen, Guilford junior Joey Gould, Foster, and Conners came in third place (3:19.31).

Foster finished fourth in the 50 freestyle (22.24) and took fifth place in the 100 butterfly (53.55) for GNH. Cohen finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (49.72) and was sixth for the 50 freestyle (22.74).

East Haven freshman Aeden Connors placed seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:10.54) and finished 12th in the 100 backstroke (58.47). The Warriors' 200 medley relay of Aeden Conners, Guilford freshman Hugh Henry, Guilford sophomore Alex Hansen, and Cong finished in seventh place (1:44.81).

A few days earlier, North Haven junior Christian Butler competed in the SCC Diving Championship and came in second place at Sheehan High School on Feb. 26. Butler posted a score of 432.70 points for his 11-dive performance on his way to claiming runner-up honors. Junior Alley Farrell of North Branford took fifth place in the SCC diving competition with a score of 301.35 points. Fellow North Branford junior Natayla Guerrero finished 12th with 236.60 points.

Guilford sophomore Sam Mayo finished 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:18.58) and was 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:56.40) when the conference meet resumed at SCSU. Henry finished 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.29) to go with a 12th-place performance in the 200 IM (2:07.81). Cong took 11th place in the 50 freestyle (23.42) and also finished 20th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.63) for the Warriors. Hansen claimed 12th place in the 100 butterfly (57.51) and finished 15th for the 200 IM (2:11.39).

Gould finished 13th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.43) and was 21st in the 100 freestyle (53.03) at the SCC Championship. Junior Lucas Espinosa of Guilford finished 16th in the 100 butterfly (58.17) and took 21st place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.19). North Branford junior Spencer Carroll finished 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.82) and came in 20th place in the 100 butterfly (1:00.03) for GNH.

Guilford junior RT Trotter finished 20th in the 500 freestyle (5:42.21) and placed 27th in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.89). Freshman Kyle Januszewski of North Haven took 24th place in the 200 IM (2:21.93) and finished 27th for the 100 butterfly (1:03.01). Guilford junior Devin Lu finished 30th in the 50 freestyle (25.18) and was 32nd in the 100 freestyle (57.28). North Haven sophomore Victor Zito finished 30th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.51) for the Warriors, who will be competing in the Class LL State Championship this week.
