Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team won its last two games of the regular season to finish with a record of 18-2 and take a 16-game winning streak into the playoffs. The Nighthawks, who claimed victories over Guilford and Wethersfield last week, are competing in the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament this week and then have the Division II State Tournament after that.

On Feb. 23, North Haven hosted Guilford and notched a 3-0 victory over the Grizzlies at Northford Ice Pavilion. Junior Will Sullivan got the Nighthawks started by scoring a goal on an assist from fellow junior Tommy Guidone with 36 seconds left in the first period, giving North Haven a 1-0 lead after one. Just 59 seconds into the second stanza, senior Brian Jooss took a pass from fellow senior Mike Anquillare and slipped it past the Guilford goalkeeper to make it 2-0, which was how the score stood up through two periods.

Guilford had some solid scoring chances in the third period, but Nighthawks’ senior goalie Jared Anderson turned them all aside to keep the Grizzlies off the board. North Haven maintained its two-goal lead throughout the period and then finished off the 3-0 victory when junior Alex Petersen scored an empty-netter with one second left in the game.

On Feb. 26, North Haven hit the road to face off against Wethersfield at Newington Ice Arena in its regular-season finale. The Nighthawks claimed a 4-1 win over Wethersfield to secure their 16th-consecutive victory in advance of postseason play.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

North Haven junior Christian Butler finished in second place on behalf of the Greater New Haven Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team at the SCC Diving Championship last week.

Butler posted a score of 432.70 points for his 11-dive performance on his way to earning runner-up honors when the SCC Diving Championship took place at Sheehan High School on Feb. 26. Thomas Kehoe of Fairfield Prep finished in first place with a score of 487.25. Butler recorded points that will count toward the Warriors’ team total when they swim at the SCC Championship at Southern Connecticut State University this week.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-Cheshire-North Haven (A-C-NH) girls’ ice hockey earned a first-round victory in the SCC Tournament before taking a loss in the semifinals last week. The Blades have a record of 4-15 on the year.

On Feb. 21, No. 5 seed A-C-NH claimed a 9-5 win over the 4th-seeded Hand co-op squad in the first round of SCCs at Northford Ice Pavilion. The Blades held a 2-1 lead after the first period and were up 5-2 through two. A-C-NH went on to outscore the Tigers 4-3 during the third period to get the 9-5 victory.

On Feb. 23, the Blades took on No. 1 Guilford in a SCC semifinal contest and lost the game by an 8-3 score at Northford Ice Pavilion. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, and then A-C-NH scored the opening goal of the second period to grab a 2-1 advantage. However, Guilford scored three goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the third period, after which the Grizzlies scored four more goals in the final frame to finish off the 8-3 win.
