Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team qualified for the Division V State Tournament by defeating Whitney Tech in its final game of the regular season. The Knights also took a loss to Cromwell last week to finish with an overall record of 8-12 for regular-season play this winter.

Westbrook took a 64-44 home loss against Cromwell on Feb. 23. Senior Joey Caslin scored 18 points for Westbrook in the contest. Junior Brandon Naccarato had 13 points, and senior Sammy Freeman scored 9 points.

Three days later, the Knights faced Whitney Tech on the road in their regular-season finale and claimed a 40-39 victory versus the Owls to punch their state tourney ticket. Westbrook had taken a 63-52 loss against Whitney Tech earlier in the season, but used a better defensive and rebounding effort to win the rematch with a playoff spot on the line.

Naccarato was Westbrook’s leading scorer with 21 points on the night. In a back-and-forth contest, the Knights got a steal and a basket from Naccarato late in the game to swing the momentum in Westbrook’s favor. Holding a one-point lead, Caslin came up with a clutch steal with nine seconds left in the game to help solidify the victory.

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team enters phase two of the postseason by competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

The Knights, who are 9-12 overall, have the No. 22 seed in the Class S State Tournament and played at No. 11 seed Windsor Locks in first-round action on March 1 (after press time). If Westbrook wins, the team will play the winner of No. 6 Housatonic and No. 27 Vinal Tech in the second round on Friday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The Class S quarterfinals are on Tuesday, March 8; the semifinals will be held on Monday, March 14; and the Class M final takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 19 or Sunday, March 20.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Southington-Coginchaug- Westbrook (S-C-W) co-op boys’ ice hockey team took four defeats last week to move to 2-17 with one game remaining in its campaign.

On Feb. 21, S-C-W took a 4-3 overtime loss against Hall in a home game at Newington Ice Arena. Then on Feb. 23, the Blue Knights dropped a 6-3 decision to Enfield-East Granby-Stafford in a road game at Enfield Twin Rinks.

The next day, S-C-W hosted the Housatonic co-op squad and lost the contest by a 7-3 score. Then on Feb. 26, the Blue Knights faced Sheehan on the road and took a 6-1 loss at Choate Rosemary Hall.
