East Haven Girls’ Hoops Loses in SCCs; Mazzucco and D’Auria Compete at State Open

Girls’ Basketball

The East Haven girls’ basketball team took a loss to North Haven in its regular-season finale and then dropped a contest against Hamden in the first round of the SCC Tournament last week. The Yellowjackets are sporting an overall record of 11-10 as they compete in the Class MM State Tournament this week.

On Feb. 15, East Haven took a 47-44 road loss versus North Haven in its last game of the regular season. Two days later, the 13th-seeded Yellowjackets opened play in the SCC Tournament by facing No. 4 seed Hamden on the road for a first-round contest. East Haven took a 46-33 defeat to the Green Dragons at Hamden High School.

East Haven fell behind Hamden 17-7 after the first quarter and trailed 27-12 at halftime against the Green Dragons. East Haven was still in the game while facing a 38-23 deficit entering the fourth quarter, but was unable to make up the deficit.

Sophomore Juliana Iovino scored 7 points for East Haven in the game. Sophomore Olivia Martin scored 6 points, while junior Alice Stettinger and sophomore Gianna Castellano added 5 points apiece.

Sophomore Kelsey Murray had 3 points in the contest. Senior Kate Pycela, junior Gabby Gaetano, and sophomore Seralyn Lendroth all scored 2 points, and junior Gabriella Milici had 1 point for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Basketball

The East Haven boys’ basketball team played two games during the final week of its regular season by facing Branford and Sheehan last week. The Yellowjackets took a defeat to Branford and then lost to Sheehan to finish with a record of 11-9 for regular-season play this winter.

On Feb. 16, East Haven hosted Branford and was edged out by the score of 46-44. Then on Feb. 18, the Yellowjackets traveled to Wallingford to face Sheehan and took a 78-60 defeat versus the Titans.

Sheehan held a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and was up 32-23 at halftime against East Haven. The Titans went on to win the third quarter 26-19 to take a 58-42 lead into the fourth and then finished off the victory with a 20-18 advantage in the final frame.

Senior Shea Carasone scored 19 points, and fellow senior Ron Calderon had 17 points for East Haven in the game. Junior Angelo D’Amato scored 8 points, and senior Kyle Cusano added 6 points on the night. The Yellowjackets’ scoring column was rounded out by senior Joe Verderame (3 points), senior Tim Case (2), senior Chris Bagnoli (2), junior Theo Rawls (2), and junior Josiah Perez (1).

East Haven is competing in the SCC Tournament this week and then has the Division III State Tournament after that.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The East Haven girls’ indoor track team sent two athletes to compete in the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 19. Seniors Emily Mazzucco and Morgan D’Auria represented the Yellowjackets by participating in the long jump at the meet.

Mazzucco finished in ninth place for the long jump by hitting a distance of 16 feet-1.5 inches at the State Open. D’Auria came in 14th place in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet-9 inches.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hamden-East Haven-North Branford (H-EH-NB) co-op girls’ ice hockey squad split its two games last week to move to 6-12 on the year.

On Feb. 15, H-EH-NB took a 3-0 defeat against the East Catholic co-op in a road game at Newington Ice Arena. Then on Feb. 19, the Green Dragons faced the Hand co-op team on the road and claimed a 3-0 victory at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team played one game last week when the Yellowjackets hosted North Haven on Feb. 19. The Yellowjackets took a 5-2 loss versus the Nighthawks at Northford Ice Pavilion to put their overall record at 9-6-1 on the season.

East Haven has four games remaining on its regular-season schedule. The Yellowjackets, who have qualified for the Division II State Tournament, will close out the regular season with contests against the Eastern CT Eagles, Hand, Watertown-Pomperaug, and Westhill-Stamford, the last game of which is the team’s regular-season finale at Northford Ice Pavilion on Tuesday, March 1.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team traveled to Fairfield University to take on Fairfield Prep for its regular-season finale on Feb. 15. The Warriors battled Prep to a 93-93 tie in a battle of SCC heavyweights to finish the regular season with an overall record of 8-2-1. GNH will be competing in the SCC Championship this week.
