Valley Track Competes in Conference and State Meets


The Valley Regional indoor track and field program was well-represented when the Shoreline Conference Championship took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 5, after which the Warriors sent several athletes to compete in the Class S State Championship at that same site on Feb. 12.

The Valley Regional girls’ indoor track team finished in sixth place by scoring 57 points at the Shoreline meet. The boys’ team scored 13 points to finish in ninth place at Shorelines, where senior Connor Lunz claimed first place in the shot put for Valley.

The Valley girls’ indoor track team’s 4x200 relay of senior Madeline Jacaruso, junior Olivia Baldwin, junior Eileen Russell, and sophomore Abby Reardon finished in second place with a time of 1:59.46 in the Shoreline Conference Championship. The Warriors’ 4x400 relay of Baldwin, Reardon, sophomore Emilee Surber, and junior Grace Abderhalden finished in fifth place (4:45.45); while the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Surber, Russell, Abderhalden, and sophomore Riley Soares also finished fifth (5:04.24).

Senior Caroline Hutchinson took third place in the high jump (4-8) for Valley Regional. Fellow senior Loretta Cecchini finished third for the pole vault (7-0), senior Chase Conrad took third in shot put (26-5), and Jacaruso finished third in the 300 (46.23). Baldwin took fourth place in the 300 (47.18).

Jacaruso claimed fourth place in the finals of the 55-meter dash (7.90) after advancing with a fifth-place performance in the preliminaries (8.06). Senior Stephanie Sheehan finished in fifth place for the 3,200 (14:10.27). Cecchini placed seventh in the prelims of the 55 hurdles (10.53) to make the finals and then moved up to sixth overall with her performance in the championship heat (10.52).

Hutchinson took 10th place in the 55 hurdles prelims (11.11) for Valley. Sophomore Madeline Siegel finished 16th in the shot put (19-2), while Russell finished 22nd for the 55 prelims (8.73).

On the boys’ side, Lunz launched a toss of 41 feet-9 inches on his way to winning the shot put for the Valley boys’ indoor track squad at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Lunz’s throw beat out runner-up Kevin Cavrell of Haddam-Killingworth with a 39-10.5. Lunz also finished in 11th place for the preliminaries of the 55 dash (7.23) for the Warriors.

Sophomore Aidan Babek finished eighth in the 600 (1:37.14) and claimed ninth place in the long jump (17-2.5) at Shorelines. Valley’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Avi Siegal, Babek, sophomore Zachary Scott, and freshman Kenneth Batt finished in seventh place (10:02.93).

Batt turned in an 11th-place finish in the 1,600 (5:24.13) for the Warriors. Siegel came in 14th place (5:26.19) for the 1,600, and Scott finished 20th (5:30.17) in the event.

A days after the Shoreline meet, Lunz finished 10th in the shot put for the Valley boys’ indoor track team at the Class S State Championship. Lunz recorded a top throw of 41 feet-4 inches.

Cecchini took 11th place in the high jump (7-6) for the girls’ team in states. Jacaruso finished 13th in the 300 (45.21), while Baldwin finished 16th (46.88) for the event. Jacaruso came in 25th place for the preliminaries of the 55 dash (8.07). Valley’s 4x200 relay of Jacaruso, Baldwin, Russell, and Reardon came in 11th place (1:57.93).
