The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team had a busy schedule that saw the Warriors play four home games in a five-day stretch last week. Valley put together a brilliant week by scoring four victories to improve its overall record to 16-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.
Valley Regional kicked off the week by claiming a 39-37 home win over Old Lyme on Feb. 7. Junior Lily Grow scored 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for Valley in the victory. Junior Abby Bradbury scored 13 points to go with 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Freshman Regan Grow had 6 rebounds, and senior Ava Cunningham came up with 5 deflections.
The very next day, the Warriors hosted Haddam-Killingworth and triumphed by a 55-28 final. Bradbury had a big game by netting 21 points to go with 7 rebounds on the night. Lily Grow scored 11 points and had 9 rebounds, while Regan Grow posted 7 points and 10 boards.
Then on Feb. 10, Valley played a home game against Cromwell and defeated the Panthers by the score of 49-46. Valley held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and led Cromwell 29-19 at halftime. The Panthers tried to rally with a 15-14 edge in the third quarter and a 12-6 advantage in the fourth, but the Warriors were able to hold off Cromwell’s comeback effort and leave the gym with the three-point win.
Bradbury scored 16 points with 8 rebounds for Valley. Lily Grow had 12 points and 9 rebounds in the victory. Junior Elizabeth Allen chipped in with 7 points to help the Warriors get the nod.
The day after that, the Warriors faced Morgan at Valley Regional High School and notched a 51-27 win over the Huskies. Bradbury scored 16 points in the victory. Lily Grow and Allen both scored 10 points, senior Bitzy Klomp had 6 points, junior Siena Schaller scored 5 points, and Cunningham added 4 points.
Boys’ Basketball
The Valley Regional boys’ basketball team moved to 9-8 on the season after splitting a pair of recent road games. The Warriors earned a convincing victory versus Haddam-Killingworth before losing Morgan to come away with an even week.
In its first game of the week, Valley faced H-K on the road and defeated the Cougars by the score of 56-32 on Feb. 8. Valley jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and was up 33-15 at halftime. The Warriors salted away the win by outscoring H-K 17-5 during the third quarter to bring a 47-20 advantage into the fourth.
Senior Simon Partyka recorded a triple-double by scoring 12 points to go with 10 assists and 10 steals for Valley in the victory. Fellow senior James Marsden scored 16 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Warriors. Junior Sam Hutchinson had 12 points with 5 rebounds on the night.
Junior Andrew Yermenson scored 6 points and had 3 steals for Valley Regional. Junior DiAngelo Jean-Pierre dished out 6 assists, while junior Kevin King swiped 2 steals and blocked 2 shots to help the Warriors prevail. Junior Brayden Shea had 4 points with 4 boards. Senior Zach Kirla hit a 3-pointer for Valley.
Three days later, Valley Regional traveled to Clinton to face Morgan and dropped a 46-43 decision against the Huskies. Morgan held an 18-17 lead at halftime and then outscored Valley 17-6 during the third quarter to take a 36-23 lead into the fourth.
Marsden scored 13 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 steals for the Warriors. Partyka had 7 points and 3 steals, while Jean-Pierre scored 5 points to go with 3 assists in the contest. Yermenson had 4 points with 5 rebounds, Shea also had 5 rebounds, and King added 4 points for Valley Regional.
Girls’ Gymnastics
The Valley Regional girls’ gymnastics team competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship at ABC Gymnastics in Old Lyme last week. The Warriors finished in second place out of three teams at meet on Feb. 11, scoring 125.15 points to finish behind the H-K/Morgan/Westbrook co-op squad and ahead of Old Lyme.
Senior Grace Jacaruso finished in third place in the all-around for Valley by posting a total score of 32.5 points. Jacaruso turned in a third-place performance on the vault with an 8.7 on her way to taking third all-around. Senior Erin Ward finished third on the bars (8.0) and the beam (8.2) for the Warriors.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The H-K/Morgan/Valley boys’ swimming and diving team picked up a victory versus Shelton last week. On Feb. 10, the Cougars hosted the Gaels and won the meet by the score of 81-79 at H-K High School.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) moved to 9-5-1 on the year after earning a tie and taking a loss last week.
EH-M-V-EH-OL notched a 4-4 tie with E.O. Smith-Tolland in a road game on Feb. 8. The next day, the East Haven co-op faced off against Guilford for another away game and dropped a 3-1 decision.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand/H-K/Valley/Branford/Coginchaug/Old Lyme co-op girls’ ice hockey squad lost its lone game of the week and is now 1-10 on the year. On Feb. 8, the team took a 2-0 road loss to the East Catholic co-op at Newington Ice Arena.
