Nighthawks’ Hockey Runs Win Streak to 11; Butler Helps GNH Warriors Take Two

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team increased its win streak to 11-straight games by winning both of its matchups on last week’s schedule. The Nighthawks notched road wins over Hamden and Branford to improve their record to 13-2 on the season.

North Haven claimed a 7-1 victory against Hamden at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Feb. 9. Senior Mike Anquillare got the scoring started with an unassisted goal to give North Haven a 1-0 lead after the first period. The Nighthawks went on to score five goals during the second period to take a 6-0 lead into the third.

Senior Jake Hines scored from junior Alex Petersen to give North Haven a 2-0 lead. Junior Tommy Guidone made it 3-0 with assists going to senior Nick Tondalo and junior Will Sullivan. Sophomore Logan Cole put North Haven up 4-0 on an unassisted goal, after which senior Brian Jooss extended the lead to 5-0 on an assist by freshman Nick Salzano. Sullivan scored an unassisted goal to close out the second period with the Nighthawks in command.

Hamden scored its lone goal of the game early in the third period. Later in the frame, sophomore Ben Gilbert scored from Petersen and Hines to put a bow on North Haven’s 7-1 victory. Senior Jared Anderson made 11 saves in net for the Nighthawks, who were bolstered by stellar defense from senior Justin Pniewski and junior Owen Quick.

On Feb. 12, North Haven faced off against Branford and posted a 2-1 win at Northford Ice Pavilion to make it 11-consecutive victories. North Haven struck first when Petersen scored from Hines and Quick during the first period. The Nighthawks extended their lead to 2-0 on sophomore Jake Donovan’s goal from Gilbert in the second period. Branford scored a goal in the third to cut it to 2-1, but that’s as close as the Hornets would get. Junior Bryce Petersen picked up the win in net for North Haven.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors co-op boys’ swimming and diving team claimed victory in two recent meets to improve to 8-1 with one contest left in the regular season. GNH defeated Lyman Hall-Coginchaug and Hand in last week’s matchups.

The Warriors posted a 98-78 road win over Lyman Hall-Coginchaug at Sheehan High School on Feb. 8. North Haven junior Christian Butler finished first in the diving competition (224.00) to help GNH win the meet. East Haven senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 100 butterfly (54.94) and the 200 freestyle. East Haven junior Brendan Conners finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.35) and the 500 freestyle (5:23.86).

Guilford junior Finn Henry earned top honors in the 200 freestyle (1:52.47) and the 100 freestyle (50.88) for the Warriors. Junior Aiden Cohen of Guilford claimed first place in the 50 freestyle (23.72) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.82).

The Warriors’ 200 medley relay of Conners, Henry, Guilford sophomore Alex Hansen, and Guilford sophomore William Cong finished in first place (1:47.50). GNH’s 200 freestyle relay of Foster, Guilford freshman Joey Gould, Guilford junior Lucas Espinosa, and Cohen also took first place (1:38.04).

On Feb. 11, the Warriors hosted Hand and claimed a 95-78 victory at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Butler posted another first-place performance in the diving (238.90). Conners finished first in the 200 IM (1:59.58) and the 100 backstroke (54.14), while Foster won the 100 butterfly (54.36) for GNH. Henry took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:48.21) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.98).

The Warriors’ 200 medley relay of Henry, Conners, Foster, and Cohen finished in first place (1:42.41); and the 200 freestyle relay featuring Foster, Conners, Cohen, and Henry also claimed first place (1:32.90).

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-Cheshire-North Haven co-op girls’ ice hockey team split a pair of contests last week and now has a record of 3-12 on the year.

A-C-NH earned a 5-4 home victory versus Ridgefield-Danbury- Immaculate on Feb. 9. The Blades trailed 4-2 heading into the third period, but rallied to score the last three goals of the game and come away with the one-goal win.

Three days later, the Blades played a road game versus Guilford and took a 9-3 defeat at Milford Ice Pavilion.

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team played two games last week and came away with split of the set. The Nighthawks have a record of 8-10 as they head into the last week of the regular season.

On Feb. 7, North Haven hosted Shelton and defeated the Gaels by the final score of 45-22 at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. Sophomore Damaria Williams-Davis scored 11 points to go with 9 rebounds and 5 steals for the Nighthawks. Sophomore Ava Halovatch had 10 points with 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. Sophomore Ava Papa scored 7 points with 4 steals, while junior Talia Annunziato had 7 points, 8 boards, and 3 steals. Sophomore Zaria Bradley had 3 steals in the victory.

Then on Feb. 11, the Nighthawks played a road game versus West Haven and took a 69-50 defeat against the Blue Devils. Junior Livi Johnson scored 16 points and also had 3 steals for North Haven. Williams-Davis scored 8 points to go with 9 rebounds, and freshman Olivia Ball scored 7 points in the game. Annunziato had 6 points and 5 rebounds, while sophomore Alyssa Cherian added 6 points. Halovatch had 5 boards with 2 steals, and Bradley grabbed 3 more steals.

Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team took two defeats in recent action to move to 2-16 entering the final week of the regular season. The Nighthawks lost contests against Hillhouse and Guilford last week.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 68-33 home loss against Hillhouse on Feb. 8. Junior Ryan Bernardo scored 8 points for the Nighthawks in the game. Senior Michael Brandt had 7 points, and fellow senior Matt Cocco scored 6 points for North Haven.

Three days later, the Nighthawks hosted Guilford and lost a 50-39 decision to the Grizzlies at North Haven High School. Sophomore Brendan Grudberg and Brandt both scored 10 points for North Haven in the game. Sophomore Max Cargan and sophomore Matt Bosticco had 6 points apiece.
