Morgan Boys’ Hoops Nets Two Victories; Wrestling Team Defeats New Haven

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team played three games last week and came away with a pair of victories to improve to 11-5 this year. The Huskies earned wins versus North Branford and Valley Regional to go with a loss against Barlow last week.

Morgan claimed a 66-44 road victory against North Branford on Feb. 7. Two days later, the Huskies hosted Barlow and dropped a 57-50 decision.

Senior Alex Fratamico scored 19 points for Morgan versus Barlow. Senior Andrew Nye scored 12 points, and fellow senior Connor Duffy had 8 points for the Huskies.

Then on Feb. 11, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and claimed a 46-33 win over the Warriors. Morgan held an 18-17 lead at halftime and then outscored Valley 17-6 during the third quarter to take a 36-23 lead into the fourth.

Duffy scored 13 points in the victory. Junior Cooper Galdenzi scored 12 points, while Fratamico had 11 points for the Huskies. Nye added 7 points on the night.

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team lost a pair of contests last week to move to 9-8 heading into the final week of its regular season.

On Feb. 7, Morgan was hosted North Branford and took a 53-32 defeat to the Thunderbirds. Sophomore Ava Johnson scored 11 points to go with 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the contest. Junior Caeley Ayer had 6 points with 5 rebounds, while junior Katie Morgan scored 6 points and had 7 boards for Morgan. Junior Sofie Passante added 5 points on the night.

Four days later, the Huskies played a road game versus Valley Regional and lost by a 51-27 score.

Wrestling

The Morgan wrestling team finished its regular season with a record of 6-6 after earning a road win over New Haven last week. On Feb. 9, the Huskies squared off against New Haven and won the matchup by a 37-15 score.

Junior Nick Spaziano won a 7-4 decision for Morgan in the 132-pound weight class. Fellow junior Anderson Darr claimed a 12-2 decision victory in the 160-pound division. Freshman Ariana Farr was awarded a forfeit victory in the 106-pound division for the Huskies. Morgan also received wins via forfeit from senior Alfredo Supik (126), junior Christopher Carmona (182), junior Christopher Dowd (220), and junior Luis Mendez (285).

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Morgan girls’ indoor track team came in ninth place by tallying 14 points when the Shoreline Conference Championship was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 5.

Morgan’s 4x200 relay of junior Logan Pernal, junior Camryn Coffey, junior Brooke Carislie, and senior Emilia O’Neill took third place at Shorelines by clocking in with a time of 2:03.13. The 1,600 sprint medley relay of senior Bryana Bautista, junior Emily Smith, Carlisle, and junior Sophia Morello finished in seventh place (5:22.99) for the Huskies.

Junior Logan Pernal took fifth place in the finals of the 55 hurdles (7.97) for Morgan. Pernal had finished in fourth place for the preliminaries (7.98) to advance to the championship heat. Pernal also finished eighth in the 300 (50.65) at the Shoreline meet. Senior Kailina Olcott took eighth place in the shot put (24-8.5) for Morgan.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Morgan boys’ indoor track team scored 13 points to finish in ninth place at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 5, after which the Huskies saw a few athletes compete in the Class S State Championship at that same site on Feb. 12.

Morgan’s 4x200 relay of senior Garrett Garbinski, senior Fabio Siliveira, senior Alex Gallardo, and senior Bailey Goss took second place by recording a time of 1:39.34 at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Siliveira also finished in sixth place for the long jump (18-11) for the Huskies. Fellow senior Jason Dombkowski came in seventh place in the 3,200 (11:33.92).

Morgan’s 4x200 relay team of Garbinski, Siliveira, Gallardo, and Goss went on to finish in fourth place (1:38.66) at the Class S State Championship. The quartet scored 4 points that put Morgan in 23rd place at the meet.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Morgan fencing program faced two opponents on the road last week, taking defeats against Hand and Guilford.

On Feb. 8, the Huskies traveled to Madison for a matchup with Hand. The boys’ team took a 14-13 defeat to the Tigers, and the girls’ squad lost a 16-11 decision. Senior Connor Loth went 3-0 for the boys’ saber team, while senior Maggie O’Donnell was 3-0 for the girls’ foil squad.

On Feb. 10, Morgan faced Guilford on the road. The boys’ and girls’ teams both took 16-11 defeats against the Grizzlies. O’Donnell had another 3-0 day for the girls’ foil team.

The Morgan boys’ fencing team now has a record of 7-3 on the season. The girls’ fencing team is 6-4 on the year.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The H-K/Morgan/Valley boys’ swimming and diving team picked up a victory versus Shelton last week. On Feb. 10, the Cougars hosted the Gaels and won the meet by the score of 81-79 at H-K High School. Junior Connor Levy claimed first place in the 200 individual medley (2:13.69) and the 100 freestyle (53.13) at the meet.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) moved to 9-5-1 on the year after earning a tie and taking a loss last week.

EH-M-V-EH-OL notched a 4-4 tie with E.O. Smith-Tolland in a road game on Feb. 8. The next day, the East Haven co-op faced off against Guilford for another away game and dropped a 3-1 decision.
