GNH Warriors Notch a Pair of Victories; Both Yellowjackets' Basketball Teams Get 11th Win

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors co-op boys’ swimming and diving team claimed victory in two recent meets to improve to 8-1 with one contest left in the regular season. GNH defeated Lyman Hall-Coginchaug and Hand in last week’s matchups.

The Warriors posted a 98-78 road win over Lyman Hall-Coginchaug at Sheehan High School on Feb. 8. East Haven senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 100 butterfly (54.94) and the 200 freestyle for GNH. East Haven junior Brendan Conners finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.35) and the 500 freestyle (5:23.86).

Guilford junior Finn Henry earned top honors in the 200 freestyle (1:52.47) and the 100 freestyle (50.88) for the Warriors. Junior Aiden Cohen of Guilford claimed first place in the 50 freestyle (23.72) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.82). North Haven junior Christian Butler finished first in the diving competition (224.00) to help GNH win the meet.

The Warriors’ 200 medley relay of Conners, Henry, Guilford sophomore Alex Hansen, and Guilford sophomore William Cong finished in first place (1:47.50). GNH’s 200 freestyle relay of Foster, Guilford freshman Joey Gould, Guilford junior Lucas Espinosa, and Cohen also took first place (1:38.04).

On Feb. 11, the Warriors hosted Hand and claimed a 95-78 victory at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Conners finished first in the 200 IM (1:59.58) and the 100 backstroke (54.14), while Foster won the 100 butterfly (54.36) for GNH. Henry took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:48.21) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.98). Butler posted another first-place performance in the diving (238.90).

The Warriors’ 200 medley relay of Henry, Conners, Foster, and Cohen finished in first place (1:42.41); and the 200 freestyle relay featuring Foster, Conners, Cohen, and Henry also claimed first place (1:32.90).

Girls’ Basketball

The East Haven girls’ basketball team played recent three games and came away with two wins to put its record at 11-8 entering the last week of the regular season. The Yellowjackets took a loss to Sheehan before defeating Lyman Hall and then Shelton in last week’s contests.

On Feb. 7, East Haven took a 42-32 home loss against Sheehan. Senior Kate Pycela scored 8 points for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Juliana Iovino had 6 points, while junior Alice Stettinger scored 5 points in the matchup.

Two days later, the Easties hosted Lyman Hall and won the game by a 61-56 score. East Haven took a 24-21 lead into halftime and then won the third quarter 25-21 to bring a 49-42 lead into the fourth. The Yellowjackets held off Lyman Hall’s comeback bid in the final frame and went on to get the five-point victory.

Gaetano and sophomore Juliana Iovino both scored 19 points to lift East Haven to the win. Castellano had 11 points to help the Yellowjackets prevail. Pycela added 7 points on the night.

Then on Feb. 11, East Haven played a road game versus Shelton and claimed a 33-22 victory.

Boys’ Basketball

The East Haven boys’ basketball team split a pair of matchups last week to move to 11-6 in the 2022 season.

The Yellowjackets took an 86-47 defeat to West Haven in a road game on Feb. 7. Senior Shea Carasone scored 12 points, while junior Angelo D’Amato had 10 points for East Haven. Senior Tim Case scored 8 points, and senior Hassan Ali added 7 points.

On Feb. 11, the Yellowjackets hosted Foran and claimed a 51-39 victory over the Lions at East Haven High School. Senior Kyle Cusano scored 18 points for East Haven, while fellow senior Ron Calderon had 16 points in the game. Case chipped in with 7 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team moved to 9-5-1 on the year after earning a tie and taking a loss last week. The Yellowjackets played E.O. Smith-Tolland to a draw before losing to Guilford in last week’s action.

In its first game of the week, East Haven notched a 4-4 tie with E.O. Smith-Tolland in a road game at Freitas Ice Forum on the campus of UConn. The Yellowjackets trailed 3-0 entering the third period, but then scored four-straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. Senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme scored on an assist from East Haven sophomore John D’Albero and Old Lyme sophomore Griffin McGlinchey to put the team on the board. Gennaro Pompano scored from fellow East Haven freshman Cameron LaCroix to make it 3-2 within the first two minutes of the final period.

With 4:14 remaining in regulation, East Haven junior Nick Ruggiero scored from Pompano to knot the score at 3-3. About a minute later, East Hampton senior Josh Berg scored on a helper from Pompano to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead. E.O. Smith-Tolland tied the game by scoring a goal with 1:24 to play, and the game ultimately finished in a 4-4 stalemate following a scoreless overtime period. Senior captain Ethan Roach of East Haven made 20 saves in net for the Yellowjackets.

The very next day, the East Haven co-op faced off against Guilford for another away game. The Yellowjackets dropped a 3-1 decision to the Grizzlies at Walker Rink in New Haven.

During the previous week’s action, East Haven took a 5-2 road loss to Sheehan on Feb. 2 and lost a 2-1 contest to Lyman Hall on Feb. 5. Pompano scored two goals for the Yellowjackets against Sheehan with McGlinchey getting an assist on each one of them. East Hampton junior Evan Giovanelli also had an assist in the game. Sprankle scored from D’Albero and Morgan junior Tyler Weinzimmer in the Lyman Hall contest.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hamden-East Haven-North Branford (H-EH-NB) co-op girls’ ice hockey squad lost its two games last week to move to 5-13 on the campaign.

On Feb. 9, H-EH-NB took a 4-3 home loss to the Fairfield co-op team at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. Three days later, the Green Dragons took a 10-2 defeat versus Conard-Hall in a road game at Veterans Memorial Ice Rink.

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling team traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity for its regular-season finale on Feb. 9. The Yellowjackets took a 45-33 defeat against the Spartans to finish with a record of 11-11 for the regular season.

Sophomore Jack Batista-Fletcher earned a pinfall victory for East Haven in the 106-pound weight class versus Amity. Senior captain Jake Ortiz prevailed via pinfall in the 145-pound division, while junior captain Jason Toth notched a win by pin at 170 pounds. Junior Noah Franchi won an 11-4 decision for the Yellowjackets in the 152-pound division.
