DeCusati Wins Shot Put for North Haven at States
The North Haven indoor track and field program was represented by several athletes at the SCC Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 6, after which the Nighthawks competed in the Class M State Championship at that same site four days later. The North Haven boys’ indoor track team finished in 13th place with 8 points scored at SCCs and then scored 19 points to come in 12th place in states. Senior Cole DeCusati won the shot put for the Nighthawks at the state meet.
DeCusati claimed first place in the shot put by unleashing a throw of 46 feet-4.75 inches for the North Haven boys’ indoor track squad at the Class M State Championship. Junior teammate Ethan Anderson finished second in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet-11 inches for the Nighthawks.
Prior to prevailing in states, DeCusati finished in fourth place for the shot put by throwing 45 feet-3.5 inches in the SCC Championship. Anderson took fifth place in the event with a 44-5.5.
Senior Matthew O’Connell finished sixth in the pole vault (10-6) and was 16th in the long jump (17-5.5) at the SCC meet. Sophomore Jake McCreven placed ninth in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles (8.80). Junior Matt Crispi finished 14th (9.75) in the prelims of the 55 hurdles, while senior Joshua Jasiorkowski came in 20th place (10.36).
Sophomore Nico Boyle finished 10th in the 3,200 (10:31.78) for North Haven. Senior Kyle Fitzgerald finished 14th for the pole vault (9-0). Junior Tyler Wrum took 17th place in the 1,600 (4:58.80). Senior Luca Boyle finished 18th (35-0.25) in the shot put, and fellow senior Rolanyander Pizarro took 19th place (35-0) in the event.
North Haven’s 4x800 relay of senior Luke Nugent, Boyle, senior Michael Rubano, and Wurm finished in sixth place (9:13.36) at SCCs. The 4x400 relay of senior Michael DeVilliers, Rubano, junior Blake Butler, and sophomore Daniel Malone finished in 12th place (4:03.31); and the 1,600 sprint medley relay (SMR) of freshman Christopher Cretella, sophomore Jake McCreven, freshman Russell Collins, and Nugent also finished in 12th place (4:24.84).
For the girls’ indoor track team, North Haven’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Anna Mortali, junior Payton Orosco, freshman Grace DeNardis, and senior Caitlyn McFarland finished in seventh place (11:59.09) at the SCC Championship. The SMR of senior Brooke Waldron, junior Aisling Pretty, senior Grace Finch, and sophomore Rebecca Ford took eighth place (4:56.16) at the meet. The 4x200 relay of sophomore Jade Lewis, senior Grace Finch, junior Carina Esposito, and Waldron came in 12th place (2:02.60).
Senior Emily Cocco finished 15th (26-11) in the shot put, while fellow senior Erin Knapp claimed 17th place (25-5.75) in the shot put for the Nighthawks. Orosco took 20th place (3:46.83) in 1,000, and Mortali finished 22nd (3:56.32) in the event.
A few days later, North Haven sent several athletes to participate in the Class M State Championship meet. In addition to DeCusati’s victory and Anderson’s runner-up performance in the shot put, North Haven saw McCreven sprint his way to a sixth-place finish in the 55 hurdles. McCreven placed sixth in the finals (8.65) of the 55 hurdles after advancing with a sixth-place finish in the preliminaries (8.67).
North Haven’s 4x400 relay of DeVilliers, junior Daniel-Mark Thomas, Malone, and senior Kevin Rourke finished in 12th place (3:50.07); and the 4x200 relay of DeVilliers, Thomas, Cretella, and senior Ty Rooney came in 19th place (1:42.90).
For the girls’ team, Greene took 11th place in the high jump (4-6) for North Haven at states. The Nighthawks’ 4x200 relay of Lewis, Finch, Waldron, and senior Ada Forbes finished in 13th place (1:59.23).
