Warriors Take Two Defeats, Bounce Back with Win; Hockey Squads Drop Contests

Girls’ Basketball

The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team took its first two defeats of the season last week, but then finished the week with a victory and is now 12-2 on the year. The Warriors lost contests against North Branford and East Hampton before earning a win versus Fitch in its final matchup of the week.

Valley saw its 11-game win streak to begin the year come to an end when the Warriors took a 67-56 road loss to North Branford on Jan. 31. The game was tied 13-13 before North Branford outscored Valley 15-5 in the second quarter to take a 28-18 lead into halftime. The Thunderbirds were able to hold off Valley’s comeback effort in the second half to win the contest by 11 points.

Junior Abby Bradbury scored 22 points to go with 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 blocks in the loss. Junior Lily Grow also had 22 points with 6 boards and 3 blocks, in addition to grabbing 3 steals. Sophomore Olivia Cunningham pulled down 15 rebounds and had 2 steals for the Warriors. Senior Ava Cunningham had 4 assists, and junior Siena Schaller had a pair of steals.

On Feb. 3, Valley faced East Hampton on the road and dropped a 41-28 decision against the Bellringers. Two days later, the Warriors claimed a 46-32 win versus Fitch in a non-conference home game.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) co-op boys’ ice hockey team took two defeats last week to move to 9-4 on the year.

On Feb. 2, EH-M-V-EH-OL took a 5-2 road loss to Sheehan at Choate Rosemary Hall. Three days later, the Yellowjackets hosted Lyman Hall and dropped a 2-1 decision at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme scored East Haven’s goals against Lyman Hall. East Haven sophomore John D’Albero and Morgan junior Tyler Weinzimmer had the assists on the goal.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand/H-K/Valley/Branford/Coginchaug/Old Lyme co-op girls’ hockey team played an away game against Trumbull-St. Joseph on Feb. 1. The team took a 3-1 loss in the contest at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton to move to 1-9 on the season.

Sophomore Jaimey DiNapoli scored the goal for the Tigers in the game. Senior goalie Megan Hart made 32 saves in net.
