Yellowjackets Grapple at SCCs; GNH Warriors Earn Win Versus Cheshire

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling team competed in the SCC Championship at Xavier High School last weekend. East Haven finished in 10th place by scoring 22 points when the SCC meet took place on Feb. 5.

Sophomore Jack Batista-Fletcher advanced to the championship match of the 106-pound division for the Easties at SCCs. Batista-Fletcher won an 8-4 decision in the semifinal round to make it to the final, where he lost to Raekwon Shabazz of Xavier by pinfall at the 1:46 mark to finish as the runner-up.

Senior captain Jake Ortiz finished in fourth place for the 145-pound weight class. After losing in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, Ortiz won his first two matches by pin in the consolation bracket to advance to the final. Ortiz lost to Fairfield Prep’s Joseph Cardozo by pin at the 1:12 mark of the third-place bout.

Prior to competing in SCCs, East Haven traveled to Milford to square off against Foran on Feb. 1. The Yellowjackets took a 73-10 defeat versus the Lions to put their regular-season record at 10-10.

Batista-Fletcher won a 12-0 decision in the 106-pound division for East Haven. Freshman Joe Allen earned a pinfall victory at the 3:43 mark in the 182-pound division.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The GNH Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Cheshire at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Feb. 5. The Warriors claimed a 101-76 victory against the Rams to move to improve to 6-1 for the 2022 season.

East Haven senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 50 freestyle (22.97) and the 100 freestyle (49.83) for the Warriors. East Haven junior Brendan Conners finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.81) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.54).

Guilford senior Finn Henry claimed first place in the 200 individual medley (2:01.00) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.48). North Haven junior Christian Butler earned top honors in the 1-meter diving (228.55). GNH’s 200 medley relay of Henry, Conners, Foster, and Guilford junior Lucas Espinosa also took first place (1:42.90).

Boys’ Basketball

The East Haven boys’ basketball team stands at 10-5 after gaining a split of last week’s games. The Yellowjackets won a close one over North Haven and then took an overtime loss to Lyman Hall in recent action.

The Easties started off their week by posting a 42-40 home win against North Haven on Jan. 31. Senior Ron Calderon sank a shot as time expired to give the Yellowjackets the two-point victory, marking the second time in the past two weeks that Calderon hit a buzzer-beater. Calderon had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

The next day, East Haven played a road game versus Lyman Hall and took a 59-51 defeat in overtime. Calderon scored 21 points for the Yellowjackets in the contest. Senior Shea Carasone scored 12 points, and fellow senior Tim Case had 11 points for East Haven.

Girls’ Basketball

The East Haven girls’ basketball team moved to 9-7 on the season after splitting a pair of recent matchups. The Yellowjackets defeated Wilbur Cross before taking a defeat against Hillhouse last week.

On Feb. 1, the Yellowjackets played a road game versus Wilbur Cross and claimed a 58-20 victory over the Governors. The following day, East Haven hosted Hillhouse and dropped a 49-42 decision to the Academics.

Senior Kate Pycela scored 12 points for the Yellowjackets versus Hillhouse. Junior Gabby Gaetano scored 10 points, sophomore Gianna Castellano had 9 points, and junior Alice Stettinger added 7 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team took two defeats last week to move to 9-4 on the year.

On Feb. 2, East Haven took a 5-2 road loss to Sheehan at Choate Rosemary Hall. Three days later, the Yellowjackets hosted Lyman Hall and dropped a 2-1 decision at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme scored East Haven’s goals against Lyman Hall. East Haven sophomore John D’Albero and Morgan junior Tyler Weinzimmer had the assists on the goal.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hamden-East Haven-North Branford (H-EH-NB) girls’ ice hockey team won one of its three games last week to move to 5-11.

On Feb. 2, H-EH-NB took a 3-0 home loss against the Suffield co-op at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The following day, the Green Dragons took a 7-1 loss to Guilford in a road game at Milford Ice Pavilion. Then on Feb. 5, H-EH-NB hosted West Haven-SHA and notched a 3-1 victory in the contest.
