Valley Boys’ Basketball Gets a Split; Gymnastics Team Defeats Old Lyme

Boys’ Basketball

The Valley Regional boys’ basketball team moved to 6-7 this season after gaining a split of two recent games. The Warriors took a loss to Hale-Ray before earning a win versus Coginchaug in last week’s contests.

Valley took a 57-47 road loss against Hale-Ray on Jan. 25. The Warriors fell behind 15-4 after the first quarter and were down 25-10 at halftime to the Noises. Valley outscored Hale-Ray 11-8 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 33-21 entering the fourth. The Warriors had a 26-24 edge during the high-scoring fourth quarter, but were unable to come all the way back.

Senior James Marsden scored 16 points to go with 4 blocks and 4 steals for Valley Regional. Junior DiAngelo Jean-Pierre had 13 points with 7 assists and 4 steals in the contest. Junior Andrew Yermenson scored 8 points, junior Brayden Shea scored 6 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and junior Sam Hutchinson grabbed 6 boards for the Warriors.

Two days later, Valley Regional got back in the win column by claiming a 49-37 victory over Coginchaug in a home game. Valley got off to a solid start by outscoring the Blue Devils in the first (11-8) and second (14-5) quarters to take a 25-13 lead into the break. Coginchaug won the third quarter to make it 33-23 entering the final frame, the Warriors held off the Blue Devils’ comeback effort in the fourth and walked off the floor with a 12-point win.

Marsden had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists to help Valley get the victory. Hutchinson scored 14 points to go with 6 boards and 2 blocks on the night. Jean-Pierre had 6 points with 7 assists and 2 steals for the Warriors. Shea had 6 points with 2 steals, while junior Kevin King notched 2 blocks for Head Coach Kevin Woods’s squad.

Girls’ Gymnastics

The Valley Regional girls’ gymnastics team had a road meet against Old Lyme and the H-K/Morgan/Westbrook co-op at ABC Gymnastics on Jan. 28. The Warriors posted a team score of 131.13 to earn a win versus Old Lyme (110.3) and take a loss against H-K/Morgan/Westbrook (138.95).

Senior Grace Jacaruso finished third in the all-around with a score of 33.65 for Valley Regional. Freshman Corina Pagliuco took third place on the beam (8.6), and senior Erin Ward finished fourth on bars (8.6).

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) co-op boys’ ice hockey hosted Amity for a matchup at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 24. The Yellowjackets dropped a 6-3 decision to the Spartans to move to 9-2 on the season.

EH-M-V-EH-OL fell behind 1-0 and then tied the game when East Haven freshman Gennaro Pomparo scored from senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme and East Haven sophomore Michael Savo for a 1-0 score after the first period. Amity scored two goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the third.

The Spartans scored early in the third period, but the Yellowjackets responded with two goals to cut the deficit to 4-3. East Hampton senior Josh Berg scored from Pompano and Morgan junior Tyler Weinzimmer for the first goal, after which Sprankle netted an unassisted goal to get EH-M-V-EH-OL within a goal with 8:38 left in the game. Amity scored a goal to go up 5-3 with 5:42 to play and then scored an empty-netter with 55 seconds left to finish off the 6-3 victory.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand/H-K/Valley/Branford/Coginchaug/Old Lyme co-op girls’ hockey team hit the road to face off against the Avon co-op squad on Jan. 26. The Tigers took a 6-0 loss to Avon at Newington Ice Arena to move to 1-8 on the year.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The H-K/Morgan/Valley (H-K/M/V) co-op boys’ swimming and diving team hosted a pair of meets last week. The Cougars took losses against Cheshire and Notre Dame-West Haven in the two meets at H-K High School.

On Jan. 24, H-K/M/V lost to Cheshire by the score of 78-64. Senior Connor Levy won the 100 butterfly (1:00.16) for the Cougars. Junior Jack Ferguson finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:03.19), while junior Alejandro Campo de la Vera won the 50 freestyle (24.91).

Three days later, the Cougars took a 95-72 defeat to Notre Dame-West Haven. Levy finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.33) and the 100 freestyle (54.00), while Ferguson earned top honors for the 100 butterfly (58.69) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.97). Camp de la Vera finished first in the 100 breaststroke (24.91).
