H-K Wrestling Picks Up Some Wins; Gymnastics Team Sweeps Another Meet


Wrestling

The Haddam-Killingworthwrestling squad squared off against Guilford for a road meet on Jan. 19. The Cougars claimed a 36-31 victory over the Grizzlies in the matchup at Guilford High School.

Freshman Gunnar Howes earned a pinfall victory at the 1:34 mark of the 120-pound bout for H-K. Freshman Colton Merola won a 7-0 decision in the 126-pound division, while senior Greyson Merola pinned his adversary in 2:35 at 138 pounds.

Junior Cavin Napoletano prevailed via pin at the 1:35 mark of the 145-pound contest. Senior Ben Williams was a pinfall winner at 152 pounds, junior Jacob Martone won his 170-pound bout on a 7-1 decision, and junior Nick Frasco pinned his opponent in 1:43 for the 285-pound bout.

On Jan. 22, H-K hosted the Cougar Duals and claimed a 57-18 victory versus Hand at the meet. The Cougars were bolstered by pinfall wins from senior Ethan Wright (113 pounds), freshman Gunnar Howes (126), sophomore Louis Virgulto (132), Greyson Merola (138), Napoletano (145), Martone (160), senior Nicholas Glynn (170), and junior Neal Scheppach (195). H-K also saw Williams win a decision at 152 to help the Cougars get the victory.

Girls’ Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Westbrook co-op gymnastics squad competed against three teams in a meet at Flip-Flop Gymnastics on Jan. 22. The Cougars swept the competition by posting a team score of 130.85 to defeat Valley Regional (117.05), Mercy (106.95), and Hamden (96.6).

H-K junior Juliana Gagliardi finished first in the all-around by scoring a total of 34.9 points at the meet. Gagilardi took first place on vault (9.0), bars (8.9), and floor (8.9) to go with third-place showing on beam (8.1) on her way to finishing first overall. Morgan junior Megan Cafferty and H-K sophomore Rebecca Rosenblum-Jones finished in a tie for third place on the vault with their respective scores of 8.3. Cafferty also took second place for the floor with a score of 8.6, while Westbrook sophomore Hannah Freund finished third on floor with an 8.4.

Boys’ Basketball

The H-K boys’ basketball team lost a pair of road games last week to move to 0-10 on the year.

On Jan. 18, H-K faced Coginchaug on the road and took a 54-49 overtime loss against the Blue Devils. Three days later, the Cougars played a road game versus Westbrook and dropped a 61-46 decision to the Knights.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Rocky Hill//Plainville/Middletown/H-K (RH/P/M/H-K) co-op boys’ ice hockey team won one of its three games last week to move to 5-5 on the season.

On Jan. 19, RH/P/M/H-K claimed a 4-3 win over Northeastern in a home game at Cromwell Skating Center. Then on Jan. 22, the Terriers dropped a 5-1 contest against E.O. Smith-Tolland in a road game at Freitas Ice Forum on the campus of UConn. The day after that, RH/P/M/H-K took a 4-0 road loss to Woodstock Academy at the Pomfret School.
