Morgan Girls’ Basketball Notches Fifth-Straight Win; Boys’ Hoops Takes Two of Three

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team won a pair of games last week to boost its record to 6-4 for the winter campaign. The Huskies defeated Hale-Ray and Coginchaug in recent action and have now won five consecutive games.

Morgan started off its week by notching a 50-27 home victory versus Hale-Ray on Jan. 18. The Huskies stormed out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and were up 25-14 at halftime. Morgan went on to outscore the Noises in the third (16-9) and fourth (9-4) periods to cruise to the 23-point victory.

Sophomore Ava Johnson scored 16 points to go with 6 rebounds and 6 steals for the Huskies. Junior Caeley Ayer had 13 points with 6 assists and 4 steals. Junior Sofie Passante scored 10 points and also had 8 boards with 2 steals on the night.

Junior Eva O’Sullivan had 6 points, while fellow junior Katie Martin scored 5 points to go with 5 rebounds for Morgan. Senior Ava Zirlis grabbed 4 rebounds to contribute to the Huskies’ winning effort.

Three days later, Morgan hosted Coginchaug and edged out the Blue Devils by the final score of 50-49. Ayer scored 19 points for the Huskies in the victory. Martin and sophomore Maeve Madura both scored 11 points, while Johnson had 5 points.

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team won two of its three games last week and now has a record of 6-4 on the season.

Morgan took a 75-67 defeat to Hale-Ray in a road game on Jan. 18. The Huskies were up 40-33 at halftime, but the Noises outscored Morgan 26-13 in the third quarter to take a 59-53 lead into the fourth and went on to get the eight-point victory.

Junior Cooper Galdenzi had 16 points and 2 blocks for Morgan in the contest. Senior Tim McComiskey scored 12 points, while fellow senior Alex Fratamico had 10 points with 11 rebounds for the Huskies.

Senior Connor Duffy had 10 points with 8 boards for Morgan. Fellow Senior Andrew Nye scored 8 points and also had 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals. Juniors Matt Reed and Eddie Dwake added 5 points apiece with Dwake also getting a couple of steals.

On Jan. 21, Morgan played a road game against Coginchaug and prevailed by a 76-42 score. The Huskies jumped out to a 23-8 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Blue Devils in both the second (19-10) and third quarters (20-8) to increase their lead to 62-26 entering the fourth.

Galdenzi scored 15 points, and Fratamico had 14 points for Morgan in the win. Duffy scored 10 points, Reed had 9 points, Dwake and junior Ben McDonnell each scored 6 points, and senior Cameron Johnson had 5 points.

The following evening, the Huskies hosted North Branford and posted a 60-40 victory over the Thunderbirds.

Wrestling

The Morgan wrestling team competed against Shelton in a meet at Derby High School last weekend. The Huskies took a 48-36 defeat to the Gaels on Jan. 22.

Sophomore David Mantilia earned a pinfall win at the 1:27 mark in the 138-pound bout for Morgan. Junior Christopher Carmona pinned his opponent in just 10 seconds in the 195-pound matchup.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Morgan-Valley-East Hampton-Old Lyme (EH-M-V-EH-OL) co-op boys’ ice hockey team played three games at Northford Ice Pavilion last week and claimed three victories to improve its record to 9-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets defeated Branford, North Branford, and Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks (S-G-WL) in recent action.

EH-M-V-EH-OL started off the week by posting an 8-2 road win over Branford on Jan. 17. Branford held a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Yellowjackets erupted with six goals in the second period and then added two more scores in the third on their way to the victory.

Senior captain Michael Robert of East Haven tied the game at 1 by scoring an unassisted goal early in the second period. Senior Josh Berg scored from junior and fellow East Hampton resident Nicholas Ruggiero and senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme to give East Haven a 2-1 lead. East Haven sophomore Michael Savo made it 3-1 by scoring on an assist from East Haven freshman Gennaro Pompano, who netted an unassisted goal just a few seconds later to put the Yellowjackets up 4-1 within the first five minutes of the second period. Joseph Vocatura scored from fellow East Haven junior Alan Schroeter to make it 5-1, after which Savo scored from freshman Cameron LaCroix of East Haven for a 6-1 advantage through two.

Branford scored the first goal of the third period, but the Yellowjackets responded when Old Lyme sophomore Griffin McGlinchey scored from Robert and Pompano to make it a 7-2 game. Pompano later scored from McGlinchey and Savo to finish off the 8-2 victory. Senior captain Ethan Roach of East Haven made 24 saves in the win.

On Jan. 21, EH-M-V-EH-OL notched a 4-3 victory versus North Branford in another road game at Northford Ice Pavilion. The following day, the Yellowjackets hosted S-G-W and posted a 5-0 shutout to finish off an undefeated week.
