East Haven Hockey Squad Improves to 9-1; Boys’ Hoops Gets Two Wins

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team played three games at Northford Ice Pavilion last week and claimed three victories to improve its record to 9-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets defeated Branford, North Branford, and Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks (S-G-WL) in recent action.

East Haven started off the week by posting an 8-2 road win over Branford on Jan. 17. Branford held a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Yellowjackets erupted with six goals in the second period and then added two more scores in the third on their way to the victory.

Senior captain Michael Robert of East Haven tied the game at 1 by scoring an unassisted goal early in the second period. Senior Josh Berg scored from junior and fellow East Hampton resident Nicholas Ruggiero and senior captain Parker Sprankle of Old Lyme to give East Haven a 2-1 lead. East Haven sophomore Michael Savo made it 3-1 by scoring on an assist from East Haven freshman Gennaro Pompano, who netted an unassisted goal just a few seconds later to put the Yellowjackets up 4-1 within the first five minutes of the second period. Joseph Vocatura scored from fellow East Haven junior Alan Schroeter to make it 5-1, after which Savo scored from freshman Cameron LaCroix of East Haven for a 6-1 advantage through two.

Branford scored the first goal of the third period, but East Haven responded when Old Lyme sophomore Griffin McGlinchey scored from Robert and Pompano to make it a 7-2 game. Pompano later scored from McGlinchey and Savo to finish off the 8-2 victory. Senior captain Ethan Roach of East Haven made 24 saves in net for the Yellowjackets.

On Jan. 21, East Haven notched a 4-3 victory versus North Branford in another road game at Northford Ice Pavilion. The following day, the Yellowjackets hosted S-G-W and posted a 5-0 shutout to finish off an undefeated week.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hamden-East Haven-North Branford (H-EH-NB) co-op girls’ ice hockey squad won one of its three games last week to move to 3-9 on the campaign.

On Jan. 17, H-EH-NB took a 5-2 road loss versus Ridgefield-Danbury-Immaculate at Wintergarden Ice Arena. Two days later, the Green Dragons hosted Amity-Cheshire-North Haven and claimed a 7-5 victory at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. Then on Jan. 22, H-EH-NB took a 6-1 loss against Conard-Hall in a home game.

Boys’ Basketball

The East Haven boys’ basketball team played four games last week and came away from the slate with two victories to put its record at 7-4 on the year.

In its first game of the week, East Haven took a 57-42 home loss against Guilford on Jan. 17. The next day, the Yellowjackets played a road game versus Foran and lost by the score of 55-38. Senior Ron Calderon scored 10 points for East Haven in the contest. Junior Theo Rawls scored 8 points, senior Shea Carasone had 7 points, and senior Tim Case scored 6 points.

Then on Jan. 21, East Haven hosted Platt Tech and claimed a 52-50 victory over the Panthers. The day after that, the Yellowjackets had a rematch with Guilford and gained a measure of revenge by earning a 69-60 win against the Grizzlies.

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling team competed against Windsor in a meet at Granby High School on Jan. 22. The Yellowjackets edged out Windsor for the victory by winning the contest by the final score of 43-42.

Freshman Gonul Celik pinned his opponent at the 1:33 mark of the 126-pound bout. Sophomore Elijah Trufan was a pinfall winner in the 132-pound bout, and freshman Joe Allen earned a win by pin at 182 pounds. Senior Mike Pagan won his match via pinfall at the 1:51 mark in the 195-pound division.

On that same day, East Haven faced Suffield-Windsor Locks and claimed a 48-24 victory. Freshman Alex Dombrowski won his 152-bout via pinfall, while fellow freshman Zander Molster prevailed by pin at 285 pounds.

Also at that meet, the Easties notched a 54-21 win over Granby. Junior Marcello Torres (106), Trufan (132), and Pagan (195) each won their respective matches by pin for the Yellowjackets.

Earlier in the week, East Haven wrestling team squared off against Branford for a home meet on Jan. 19. The Yellowjackets took a 71-6 loss to the Hornets in the matchup at East Haven High School.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Xavier for a meet at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Jan. 21. GNH took a 97-81 loss against the Falcons and now has a record of 4-1 for the 2022 season.

The Warriors’ 400 freestyle relay of East Haven senior Hethon Foster, East Haven freshman Aeden Conners, Guilford junior Aiden Cohen, and Guilford senior Finn Henry finished in first place (3:31.26) against Xavier. Henry took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:46.03) and the 500 freestyle (4:52.40) for GNH. North Haven junior Christian Butler finished first in the 1-meter diving (244.30) at the meet.
