Westbrook Girls’ Basketball Earns a Split; Boys’ Hoops Loses to Valley

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team split a pair of games last week to move to 5-3 on the season. The Knights lost to Valley Regional before closing out the week with a win over Wheeler.

Westbrook started off the week by taking a 64-38 defeat against Valley Regional in a home game on Jan. 11. Valley held a 15-4 lead after the first quarter before Westbrook outscored the Warriors 19-11 in the second to cut the deficit to 27-23 at halftime. In the second half, Valley outscored the Knights in both the third (19-9) and fourth (19-6) quarters to pull away for the victory.

Senior Jami Sacco scored 20 points and had 9 rebounds for Westbrook. Senior Sadie Susi had 10 points, and fellow senior Alexandra Zanzalari scored 6 points for the Knights.

Then on Jan. 15, the Knights hosted Wheeler and claimed a 53-27 victory at Westbrook High School.

Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team traveled to Deep River to take on Valley Regional on Jan. 11. The Knights took a 49-25 defeat versus the Warriors to move to 3-4 for the season.

Valley was up 10-8 after the first quarter and held a 22-9 halftime advantage against Westbrook. The Knights outscored Valley 12-10 during the third quarter to make it 32-21 entering the fourth. The Warriors went on to win the fourth quarter 17-4 to come away with the victory. Junior Brandon Naccarato was Westbrook’s leading scorer by scoring 13 points on the night.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook girls’ indoor track team came in sixth place at the Shoreline League Meet on Jan. 13. The Knights scored 14 points as a squad to take sixth place at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Junior Halley Pierson finished second in the pole vault (7-6) and took fifth place in the long jump (13-4.75) for Westbrook. The Knights’ 4x200 relay of Pierson, sophomore Kayla Prisley, junior Mackenzie True, and junior Delaney Belcourt finished in fourth place (2:04.99).

Pierson had taken previously taken fifth place in the pole vault (7-0) when Westbrook competed at the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational on Jan. 10.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook boys’ indoor track squad finished in 10th place by scoring 8 points at last week’s Shoreline League Meet.

Junior Hever Gomez finished third in the 55 hurdles (9.82) for the Knights at the meet. Senior Gregory Araya came in fifth place for the 1,600 (5:14.28).

Gomez also finished fourth in the 55 hurdles (9.73) at the Haddam- Killingworth Invitational earlier in the week.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook (S-C-W) boys’ ice hockey squad lost two games last week to move to 0-5 on the year.

On Jan. 12, S-C-W, took a 10-1 road loss to Guilford at Ralph Walker Skating Rink in New Haven. Three days later, the team played a road game against Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainville/Haddam-Killingworth and took a 7-1 loss at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell.
