The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team hit the court to play three games last week. The Warriors came away with three victories and improved to 7-0 on the year after defeating Westbrook, Portland, and Northwest Catholic in last week’s action.
Valley kicked off its week by earning a 64-38 road victory versus Westbrook on Jan. 11. The Warriors stormed out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter, but Westbrook outscored Valley 19-11 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 26-23 at halftime. However, Valley came back to outscore the Knights in both the third (19-9) and fourth (19-6) quarters to pull way for the victory.
Junior Abby Bradbury scored 26 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to go with 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 8 steals for the Warriors. Sophomore Olivia Cunningham scored 18 points and also had 13 boards with 4 assists and 3 blocks.
Senior Bitzy Klomp had 6 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals for Valley. Senior Ava Cunningham had 4 points with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, and freshman Regan Grow scored 4 points to go with 12 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Then on Jan. 14, the Warriors were on the road to face Portland and claimed a 54-26 win versus the Highlanders. Valley held a 14-7 lead over Portland after the first quarter, then outscored Portland 18-3 during the second quarter to take a 32-10 lead into halftime. The Warriors went on the win the third quarter 13-6 to make it 45-16 entering the fourth.
Grow turned in a huge performance by scoring 16 points and grabbing 22 rebounds in the victory. Olivia Cunningham had 14 points with 5 rebounds, while Bradbury scored 10 points to go with 7 assists, 5 boards, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.
Ava Cunningham scored 5 points and had 4 assists with 2 steals for Valley. Junior Siena Schaller had 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Klomp and junior Elizabeth Allen added 3 steals apiece.
The next day, Valley played a road game versus Northwest Catholic and triumphed by a 46-41 score. Valley was up 16-5 after one and 27-12 through two, but the Lions outscored the Warriors 15-10 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 37-27 heading into the fourth. Northwest Catholic outscored Valley 14-9 in the final frame, but the Warriors were able to hang on for the five-point win.
Bradbury had 27 points with 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals for Valley. Olivia Cunningham scored 11 points to go with 7 boards, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Schaller corralled 10 rebounds and had 2 steals, while Ava Cunningham had 4 assists with 2 steals.
Boys’ Basketball
The Valley boys’ basketball team played home games against Westbrook and Portland in last week’s action. The Warriors earned a win over Westbrook and then took a loss versus Portland to move to 4-4 on the year.
On Jan. 11, Valley Regional hosted Westbrook and defeated the Knights by the final score of 49-25. Valley was up 10-8 after one and held a 22-9 halftime advantage over Westbrook. The Knights won the third quarter 12-10, but Valley outscored Westbrook by a 17-4 margin in the final frame to win the game by 24 points.
Senior Saagar Patel scored 16 points and also had 8 rebounds for Valley in the victory. Senior James Marsden had 14 points with 2 steals and two blocks for the Warriors.
Junior Sam Hutchinson scored 7 points to go with 10 rebounds, while fellow junior DiAngelo Jean-Pierre had 4 points with 8 assists and 2 steals in the win. Senior Simon Partyka and junior Andrew Yermenson each grabbed 3 steals for Valley.
Then on Jan. 14, Valley hit the road to take on Portland and took a 56-37 defeat to the Highlanders. Valley was only down 21-20 at halftime, but Portland outscored the Warriors in the third (12-4) and fourth (23-13) quarters and went on to get the win.
Patel scored 10 points for the Warriors. Jean-Pierre had 8 points with 5 assists, Marsden scored 7 points to go with 5 boards and 2 blocks, and Hutchinson had 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Valley Regional girls’ indoor track team finished in fifth place at Shoreline League Meet last week. The Warriors scored 50 points on their way to placing fifth at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 13.
Senior Madeline Jacaruso finished third in both the 55 (8.17) and the 300 (46.38) for the Warriors. Senior Loretta Cecchini took third place for the 55 hurdles (10.84) and the pole vault (6-6). Senior Caroline Hutchinson came in fifth place in the high jump (4-4).
Valley’s 4x200 relay of Jacaruso, junior Olivia Baldwin, sophomore Abigail Reardon, and senior Sophia Surber finished in second place (2:00.78); and the Warriors’ 4x400 relay of Surber, freshman Kendall Costello, freshman Delny Marsden, and Reardon also took second place (4:57.40). The 1,600 sprint medley relay of Surber, Reardon, Marsden, and junior Bailey Hilliar finished in third place (5:49.17). Senior Stephanie Sheehan finished sixth in the 3,200 (14:22.16), while senior Caroline Hutchinson took sixth in the 55 hurdles (11.52).
Previously, Valley took part in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 10. Jacaruso finished second in the 300 (46.51), and Cecchini took second place in the pole vault (7-0) for the Warriors. Valley’s 4x200 relay of Jacaruso, junior Eileen Russell, Surber, and Reardon finished in fourth place (2:03.69); and the 4x400 relay of Sophia Surber, sophomore Emilee Surber, Baldwin, and sophomore Madeline Siegel also came in fourth place (4:59.83). Sheehan finished sixth in the 3,200 (14:29.01).
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Valley Regional boys’ indoor track team came in ninth place with 16 points scored at last week’s Shoreline League Meet.
Senior Connor Lunz won the shot put with a toss of 39 feet-6.5 inches for Valley at the meet. Sophomore Aidan Babek came in third place in the long jump (17-5.25) on behalf of the Warriors.
Lunz also won the shot put with a throw of 41-4 when Valley competed at the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational earlier in the week. Valley’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Elliott Stack, sophomore Avi Siegel, Babek, and freshman Kenneth Batt finished in fifth place (10:30.39).
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand co-op girls’ ice hockey team moved to 1-6 on the season after splitting its two games last week.
On Jan. 14, Hand hosted the Masuk co-op squad and dropped a 5-1 decision at Northford Ice Pavilion. The next day, the Tigers played a road game versus the Hamden co-op and claimed a 5-1 victory at Lou Astorino Ice Arena.
