Palluzzi Leads Hornets to Perfect Week; Girls’ Hoops Defeats Wilbur Cross

Boys’ Basketball

The Branford boys’ basketball team notched three wins last week to improve to 8-1. The Hornets defeated Shelton, Classical, and North Haven in recent play.

Branford started off its week by claiming a 57-40 victory at Shelton on Jan. 11. The next day, the Hornets hit the road to square off against Classical and edged out the Gladiators 58-56.

Freshman Max Rosenberg hit a basket as time expired to lift Branford to its win over Classical. Rosenberg scored 6 points to go with 8 rebounds for the Hornets, whose leading scorer was sophomore Jake Palluzzi with 32 points. Palluzzi also had 4 assists and 4 steals. Sophomore Nate Florio had 8 points with 5 assists, while senior Dylan Sachs scored 4 points and had 6 steals.

On Jan. 14, Branford played a home game versus North Haven and defeated the Nighthawks 61-42. Palluzzi put forth another brilliant performance by scoring 40 points in the victory. Junior Zach Turbert scored 12 points with 6 rebounds, Sachs also had 6 rebounds, and Florio had 5 boards. Sophomore Brennan Holmes grabbed 3 steals for Branford.

Girls’ Basketball

The Branford girls’ basketball team had a busy schedule with four games last week. The Hornets came away with one victory to put their record at 2-6.

On Jan. 10, Branford notched a 50-38 home victory versus Wilbur Cross. Two days later, the Hornets hosted North Branford and took a 61-33 defeat.

Freshman Shelby Burnham scored 13 points against North Branford. Sophomore Lyra Clifford scored 7 points, sophomore Ally Coburn had 6 points, and junior captain Lauren Kendrick scored 5 points.

Branford played a road game versus Guilford on Jan. 14, taking a 46-22 defeat. Burnham scored 8 points for the Hornets.

The following afternoon, Branford was back on the road to face Jonathan Law and lost 52-30. Clifford scored 11 points, junior Alexa Markelon scored 8 points, and Coburn had 5 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Branford boys’ ice hockey squad took two defeats last week and now has a record of 2-5.

On Jan. 12, Branford was the road team when it faced North Haven at Northford Ice Pavilion. The Hornets took a 10-4 loss in the contest.

Three days later, the Hornets played a road game versus Cheshire at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. Branford took a 5-4 overtime loss in the Saturday night matchup.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand co-op girls’ ice hockey team moved to 1-6 on the season after splitting its two games last week.

On Jan. 14, Hand hosted the Masuk co-op squad and dropped a 5-1 decision at Northford Ice Pavilion. The next day, the Tigers played a road game versus the Hamden co-op and notched a 5-1 victory at Lou Astorino Ice Arena.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Branford girls’ indoor track team participated in two meets at Floyd Little Athletic Center last week.

On Jan. 10, Branford sent several athletes to the James Barber Invitational. Sophomore Tess Wasiolek came in first place in the 1,000 (3:06.00) for the Hornets. Branford’s 4x200 relay of sophomore Raiyn Fries, senior Katie Laska, senior Julia Duffy, and sophomore Joelle Budz also took first place (1:58.82).

Duffy finished third in the 300 (45.27) with Budz placing fifth (47.30) and Laska taking sixth (47.58). Budz also finished fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.75). Senior Bella Finta took 13th place in the 1,000 (3:38.24).

The following day, Branford was represented by some athletes at the SCC Novice Meet. The Hornets’ 4x200 relay of freshman Glorianna Buckley, freshman Katie Harmon, junior Lila Wasiolek, and junior Hannah Jackson finished in second place (5:02.24). Harmon finished sixth for the 600 (1:59.47).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Branford boys’ indoor track team recently competed at two meets at Floyd Little Athletic Center. The Hornets took part in the James Barber Invitational on Jan. 10 and the SCC Novice Meet on Jan. 11.

Senior Cam Meli took third place in the 300 (39.16) for the Hornets at the James Barber Invitational. Branford’s 4x200 relay of senior Tyler Jarvis, freshman Nate McCall, sophomore Mike Shaw, and Meli finished sixth (1:48.67). The Hornets also received strong performances from sophomore Enaji Muhammad in the high jump (5-6), junior Colin Donahoe in the 1,000 (2:55.40), and junior Massimo Corrick in the 1,000 (2:57.98).

At the SCC Novice Meet, Branford’s 4x400 relay of senior Peyton Moriarty, McCall, sophomore Adam Biehl, and senior Colin Walsh finished in first place (3:58.31). The 1,600 sprint medley relay of freshman Lucian Marshock, Biehl, Walsh, and junior Kevin Zuniga came in third place (4:28.19).

Marschock claimed sixth place in the long jump (17-6). Branford’s also saw solid showings from sophomore Tanner Marrandino in the 1,600 (5:35.65), along with sophomore Carter Moore in the 300 (44.47).
