Old Saybrook’s Track Teams Prevail at Shoreline League Meet; Boys’ Hoops Improves to 4-1

Girls' Indoor Track

The Old Saybrook girls' indoor track team claimed first place when the Rams competed in the Shoreline League Meet on Jan. 13. The Rams posted a team score of 141 points to place ahead of runner-up Haddam-Killingworth (77) and win the meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Junior Avery Rueckert clamed first place in both the 55 (7.81) and the 300 (44.71) to help Old Saybrook finish first as a squad. Sophomore Lauren Dobartz won the 55 hurdles (10.19), and junior Grace Christina earned top honors for the pole vault (8-3).

Old Saybrook also received victories from its 4x200 relay of junior Abigail Colella, junior Maddie Beaudioin, Rueckert, and Brodeur (1:55.03); as well as its 1,600 sprint medley relay featuring freshman Therese-Marie Morosky, sophomore Alexandra Benni, senior Caitlin Wiley, and senior Molly Nygard (5:20.84).

The Rams also saw several athletes take second place at the Shoreline League Meet. Earning runner-up honors for Old Saybrook were Brodeur in the 55 (7.97) and 300 (44.76), junior Vikki Carrica in the 1,000 (3:35.07) and the 3,200 (13:44.92), and junior Katelin Brady in the high jump (4-8).

Previously, Old Saybrook participated in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational on Jan. 10. Old Saybrook's 4x200 relay of Benni, Colella, Rueckert, and Brodeur came in first place (1:57.16). Brodeur won the 300 (44.57), and Rueckert took first in the 600 (1:47.43). Senior Avery Nosal finished second in the 55 hurdles (9.70) for the Rams.

Boys' Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys' basketball team won two of three last week to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Rams notched wins versus Portland and North Branford to go with a loss against Morgan in their recent matchups.

On Jan. 10, Old Saybrook took a 76-57 road loss to Morgan. Senior Riley Lawson scored 20 points for the Rams, and junior Ryan Stratton had 19 points in the game.

Then on Jan. 12, the Rams hosted Portland and defeated the Highlanders by the score of 62-54. Stratton turned in another big performance by netting 23 points for Old Saybrook. Junior Aaron Tolve scored 19 points in the victory. Senior Jake Butler, Lawson, and junior Bradley Kulmann added 5 points apiece.

Two days later, Old Saybrook played a home game versus North Branford and claimed a 54-41 victory over the Thunderbirds. Tolve had 20 points, while Stratton scored 18 points for the Rams. Lawson scored 6 points, and sophomore Auggie Albert chipped in with 5 points.

Boys' Indoor Track

The Old Saybrook boys' indoor track team topped the field when it took part in the Shoreline League Meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center last week. The Rams tallied a team score of 91 points to finish ahead of second-place Coginchaug (65) and claim first place on Jan. 13.

Senior Mitchell DiPalma finished first in the 55 hurdles (8.71) to help the Rams earn top honors at the meet. Old Saybrook's 4x200 relay of senior Carson Brown, senior Noah Hester, senior Nick Rothman, and senior Nicholas Scalzo finished in first place (1:38.51); the 4x400 relay of junior Cam DeAngelo, sophomore Jacob DeAngelo, Scalzo, and senior Matt Johnson took first (3:54.76); and the 1,600 sprint medley relay featuring Brown, Cameron DeAngelo, Johnson, and junior Logan Worman also finished first (4:13.00).

Hester took second place in the 55 (6.94) for Old Saybrook. Also placing second were Cam DeAngelo in the 55 hurdles (9.12), Scalzo in the high jump (5-2), and Johnson for the long jump (18-0).

The Rams' 4x200 relay of Brown, Hester, Rothman, and Scalzo finished first (1:38.88) when the Rams competed in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational earlier in the week. Hester finished second in the 55 (6.94), while sophomore Bardth Thachi came in second place in the shot put (39-3).

Girls' Basketball

The Old Saybrook girls' basketball team took two defeats last week and is now 2-5 on the year.

The Rams opened up the week by taking a 52-31 home loss against Morgan on Jan. 10. Then on Jan. 14, Old Saybrook played a road game versus North Branford and lost by a 59-21 final. Senior Sophia Barker and freshman Breleigh Cooke both scored 4 points for Old Saybrook in the game.
