North Branford Girls’ Basketball Sweeps its Week; Boys’ Hockey Takes Two Losses

Girls’ Basketball

The North Branford girls’ basketball team won all three of its three games last week to improve to 6-3 for the season. The Thunderbirds earned wins versus Portland, Old Saybrook, and Branford in recent action.

In its first game of the week, North Branford claimed a 52-34 home victory over Portland on Jan. 10. Two days later, the T-Birds faced Branford on the road and defeated the Hornets by a 61-33 score.

North Branford trailed Branford 14-9 after the first quarter, but outscored the Hornets in both the second (18-5) and third (25-3) quarters to pull away for the win. Senior captain Braeden LeBeau had a huge game by scoring 32 points for the Thunderbirds. Sophomore Keana Criscuolo added 11 points on the night.

Then on Jan. 14, North Branford hosted Old Saybrook and claimed a 59-21 victory versus the Rams. North Branford stormed out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter and was up 35-11 at halftime versus Old Saybrook. The T-Birds put the game away by outscoring the Rams in the third (11-4) and fourth (13-10) quarters.

Criscuolo turned in a big-time performance by netting 31 points for North Branford in the victory. LeBeau scored 13 points for the Thunderbirds.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Branford boys’ ice hockey team took defeats in its two games last week to move to 3-5 on the season.

On Jan. 12, North Branford hosted Westhill- Stamford and took a 3-2 defeat at Northford Ice Pavilion. Then on Jan. 15, the T-Birds faced North Haven as the road team at Northford Ice and lost a 6-1 decision against the Nighthawks.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hamden co-op girls’ ice hockey team hosted the Hand co-op for a game at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Jan. 15. Hamden took a 5-1 loss against the Tigers to move to 2-7 for the winter season. The Green Dragons also had a scheduled Jan. 12 game versus Guilford postponed last week.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The North Branford girls’ indoor track team finished in seventh place at last week’s Shoreline League Meet. The Thunderbirds scored 12 points on their way to placing seventh at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 13.

Junior Payton Kamienski finished in first place for the 600 by running a time of 1:49.49 for North Branford. Junior Carolyn Heffernan took sixth place in the 600 (2:03.49) for the T-Birds. Sophomore Kiley Mullins finished sixth in the shot put (23-3.5).

Junior Sophie Gambardella took seventh place in the high jump (4-4) for North Branford. The T-Birds’ 4x200 relay of junior Ava Gambardella, junior Alexa Teodoro, Sophie Gambardella, and freshman Daytona Kamienski also finished in seventh place (2:15.12).

Kamienski had previously placed fourth in the 600 (1:50.51) when North Branford participated in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational on Jan. 10. The T-Birds’ 1,600 sprint medley relay of Heffernan, Dayton Kamienski, Payton Kamienski, and Ava Gambardella came in seventh place (5:26.75).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The North Branford boys’ indoor track team finished in 11th place with 1 point scored at the recent Shoreline League Meet.

North Branford’s 4x200 relay of junior Benjamin Taylor, sophomore Lars Peterson, senior Francesco Spinelli, and sophomore Logan Barrett finished in sixth place (1:57.01) at the meet. Sophomore Aidan Chittenden finished seventh in the shot put (30-7.5), and senior Zachary Chittenden took ninth place for the 1,000 (3:21.91).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team continued its strong start to the season by notching two more victories last week. The Warriors claimed home wins over West Haven and Lyman Hall-Coginchaug to improve their record to 4-0 on the campaign.

On Jan. 11, GNH hosted West Haven and claimed a 93-72 victory at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Then on Jan. 13, GNH went up against Lyman Hall-Coginchaug for another home meet and triumphed by the score of 98-80.
