H-K’s Track Teams Compete in Two Meets; Girls’ Hoops Gets First Victory

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ indoor track team hosted the H-K Invitational and then finished in second place at the Shoreline League Meet last week. Both meets took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Senior Jess Timothy took first place in the long jump (15-10.5) and finished third in the high jump (4-8) at the H-K Invitational on Jan. 10. Junior Isabel Berardino took third place in the 1,600 (5:59.19) for the Cougars, whose 4x800 relay of freshman Anna Wojnarowicz, senior Charlotte Selmer, sophomore Sydney Adelberg, and junior Georgia Cancroft also finished in third (10:55.49).

H-K went on to place second as a team with 77 points scored at the Shoreline League Meet on Jan. 13. Berardino finished first in the 1,600 (5:50.07), Timothy won the high jump (4-8), and senior Scarlett Strom won the shot put (28-8) for the Cougars.

Senior Brianna Minervino placed second in the 1,600 (5:50.87), while senior Leah Sosnowski earned runner-up honors in the 55 hurdles (10.35). Timothy finished second (14-3) for the long jump, and freshman Adriana Garoppolo took third place (13-8.5) for H-K.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Cougars’ boys’ indoor track squad hosted the H-K Invitational and then participated in the Shoreline League Meet last week, finishing in third place at the latter event.

Senior Caleb Freeman claimed first place in the 1,600 (4:53.59) when the H-K Invitational was held on Jan. 10. Senior Aidan Law finished second in the high jump (5-10) for H-K, which also saw its 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Law, senior Kevin Cavrell, junior Alexander Lara, and Freeman take second place (3:55.45).

Three days later, the Cougars were back at Floyd Little Athletic Center to compete in the Shoreline League Meet and scored 61 points to finish in third as a team. Law snagged first place in both the high jump (5-8) and the long jump (20-6.25), while freshman Jack Cozean won the 3,200 (11:06.38) for the Cougars.

Cavrell finished second in the shot put (36-10) for H-K. Freeman took second (1:31.89) in the 600 with Lara placing third (1:32.53). Senior Evan Baird finished third in the 1,000 (3:02.57).

Girls’ Basketball

After going a couple of weeks without playing a game, the H-K girls’ basketball team returned to action by playing three contests last week. The Cougars won one of their three games to put their record at 1-6 this season.

H-K dropped a 36-30 decision against Old Lyme in a home game on Jan. 10. Then on Jan. 14, the Cougars earned their first win of the year when they claimed a 52-20 victory at Hale-Ray. The following day, H-K hosted Conard and took a 41-35 loss in the matchup.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainville/H-K (RH/M/P/H-K) co-op boys’ ice hockey team played two home games at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell last week. The team won both contests to improve to 4-3 on the year.

On Jan. 12, RH/M/P/H-K hosted Conard and won the contest by a 3-2 score. Three days later, the team played a home game versus Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook and claimed a 7-1 victory.
