Tredwell Gets 200th Win with Hand Girls’ Hoops; Wrestling Team Notches a Couple of Victories

Girls’ Basketball

The Hand girls’ basketball team is sporting a record of 4-1 for the winter season. In their most-recent game, the Tigers earned a convincing win versus Mercy that marked Head Coach Tim Tredwell’s 200th victory with the program.

After defeating Hillhouse in their season opener, the Tigers took a 50-48 loss against New London in their next game at a tournament at Notre Dame-Fairfield. In its next game of the tourney, Hand claimed a 56-43 victory over Thomaston. The Tigers went on to defeat E.O. Smith by the final score of 44-31 in a home game a couple of days later.

On Jan. 7, Hand traveled to Middletown to face Mercy and defeated the Tigers by the score of 57-36 to give Coach Tredwell win No. 200. Hand outscored Mercy 22-3 in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to the 21-point win.

Senior captain Sophia Coppola scored 15 points for Hand in the victory. Fellow senior captain Brooke Salutari scored 10 points, as did junior Natalie Lucas. Junior Coco Rourke had nine points on the night. Junior Maya Blomberg chipped in with five points to help the Tigers prevail.

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball squad took its first defeat of the year when it lost a game against Notre Dame-West Haven last week, but the team came right back to defeat Lyman Hall in its next contest. Hand now holds a record of 4-1 on the year.

The Tigers hosted Notre Dame on Jan. 4 and dropped a 70-58 decision to the Green Knights. Senior Tyler Favre netted 26 points Hand in the contest. Senior Trey Adams and junior Hudson Geremia both scored eight points, while senior Morgan Veth and freshman Chase Geremia added six points apiece for the Tigers.

On Jan. 7, Hand hosted Lyman Hall and won the game by a 77-44 score. The Tigers outscored Lyman Hall 25-7 in the first quarter and 17-12 in the second to bring a 42-19 advantage into halftime. The Tigers then won the third quarter by a 14-9 margin to increase their lead to 56-28 heading into the fourth.

Favre and Hudson Geremia netted 16 points apiece for the Tigers in the victory. Chase Geremia scored 11 points on the night. Senior Danny Hilmer scored nine points, and sophomore Kyle Hoffman had six points for Hand.

Wrestling

The Hand wrestling team hit the road to face East Haven for an SCC showdown last week. The Tigers defeated the Yellowjackets 57-21 at East Haven High School on Jan. 5.

Junior Charles Wahl prevailed via pinfall at the 1:17 mark of his 126-pound bout. Sophomore Larkin Pantano pinned his opponent at the 2:16 mark of the 138-pound bout. Junior Bryan Drews won by pin in 2:48 in the 145-pound contest. Senior Cameron Chieppo was a pinfall winner at the 2:34 mark in the 152-pound division.

Senior Kyle Catalano won a 4-2 decision at 160 pounds for the Tigers. Senior John Portley pinned his opponent at the 2:28 mark at 170 pounds. Freshman Nicholas Pompilli won via pinfall at the 2:26 mark in the 220-pound bout. Sophomore Carlos Santos won by way of pin in 1:12 in the 285-pound match.

On Jan. 8, Hand competed in a meet at Southington High School, taking a 45-36 loss to Norwich Free Academy (NFA) and a 54-24 defeat versus Conard to go with a 51-18 win over Maloney. Against NFA, Wahl (126), Chieppo (152), Catalano (160), senior Charlie Keogh (182), freshman Morris Selmani (195), and Pompilli (220) earned pinfall wins for the Tigers.

In the match versus Maloney, the Tigers received pinfall victories from Wahl (126), sophomore Connor Balletto (132), Chieppo (152), Catalano (160), Portley (170), and Keogh (195), along with a win via decision by Pantano (138).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand boys’ swimming and diving team is off to a solid start with a record of 3-0 on the season.

The Tigers claimed a 98-79 win against Lyman Hall-Coginchaug in their season opener, followed by a 90-79 victory over Foran-Law in their next contest. Then last week, Hand hosted West Haven on Jan. 4 and triumphed 85-56 at Madison Racquet & Swim Club.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand co-op girls’ ice hockey team has a record of 0-5 for the winter season. On Dec. 29, Hand, which also features athletes from Haddam-Killingworth, Branford, Valley Regional, Coginchaug, and Old Lyme, took a 2-0 road loss against West Haven-SHA at Bennett Rink on Dec. 29. The co-op squad was slated to face Amity-Cheshire-North Haven on Jan. 5, but the game was postponed. On Jan. 8, the team took a 5-2 road loss to Conard-Hall at Veterans Memorial Ice Rink.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Hand girls’ indoor track team was represented by several athletes at an SCC Developmental meet held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 4.

Freshman Alexis Kuszpa finished in fifth place for the pole vault (6-6) at the meet. Freshman Grace Hall took fifth place in the shot put (27-7) on behalf of the Tigers.

Senior Meryl Sullivan came in seventh place in the 1,600 (5:42.91) for Hand. Senior Julianna Powell took seventh place in the high jump (4-4) for the Tigers. Junior Michelle Jiang finished ninth for the 55-meter dash (8.17).
