North Haven Boys’ Hockey Notches Three Victories; Boys’ Hoops Grabs First Win

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team improved to 4-2 on the season after winning three of its last four games. The Nighthawks scored victories over Amity, Glastonbury, and Westhill-Stamford to go with a loss against Farmington in recent action.

North Haven notched an 8-2 road victory versus Amity at Bennett Rink on Dec. 27. Junior Tommy Guidone scored two goals to go with two assists in the win. Junior Will Sullivan, junior Owen Quick, and freshman Nick Salzano each had a goal with an assist. Junior Alex Petersen and sophomore Jake Donovan contributed two assists apiece.

Senior Jake Hines, senior Brian Jooss, and senior Ayden Mindlin each scored a goal for the Nighthawks. Junior Joey Taft and junior Andre Ohanyan both had an assist. Senior goalie Jared Anderson turned aside 18 shots to pick up the win in net.

On Dec. 31, North Haven took a 3-1 home loss to Farmington Valley at Northford Ice Pavilion. Hines scored North Haven’s lone goal of the game.

Then on Jan. 5, North Haven was back at Northford Ice Pavilion to host Glastonbury and won the contest by a 4-0 score. Petersen scored from Hines to give North Haven a 1-0 lead at 8:23 of the first period. North Haven increased its lead to 2-0 when Petersen scored on assists by Jooss and Quick.

North Haven made it 3-0 on Guidone’s goal from Sullivan and senior Justin Pniewski. In the third period, North Haven closed out the scoring when junior Ethan Buck scored from sophomore Kevin Lawlor to finish off the 4-0 victory. Junior Bryce Petersen made 15 saves in net to get the shutout for the Nighthawks.

On Jan. 8, North Haven claimed a 5-2 road victory against Westhill-Stamford (W-S) at Terry Conners Ice Rink. North Haven struck first during the first period on a goal by Sullivan with an assist going to senior Nick Tondalo. The Nighthawks made it 2-0 when Pniewski scored on an assist by Jooss.

North Haven built its lead to 3-0 as Guidone scored a goal from Tondalo. W-S scored 15 seconds later to make it 3-1, but North Haven closed out the period on a goal by sophomore Ben Gilbert to go up 4-1, which was how it stayed through two.

W-S closed the gap to 4-2 at 4:54 of the third period, but senior Ayden Mindlin finished off the victory by scoring from Guidone to increase the Nighthawks’ lead to 5-2. Bryce Petersen picked up the win in net for North Haven.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey team saw a few games that had been scheduled for recent action get postponed, then returned to the ice for a matchup last weekend.

The team’s scheduled contest versus Conard-Hall was postponed, as was its game against the Hand co-op that had been slated for Jan. 5. Three days later, the Blades took a 10-1 road loss to the Suffield co-op at Enfield Twin Rinks to move to 2-2 on the year.

Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team earned its first win of the season when it claimed a road victory over Career last week. On Jan. 4, the Nighthawks traveled to New Haven to face Career and defeated the Panthers by a 50-39 score to pick up their first victory this year.

North Haven went on to take a 42-39 home loss versus East Haven on Jan. 7, putting the team’s record at 1-6 on the year. Sophomore Adam Pandolfi scored 20 points for North Haven in the game. Senior Aeden Bosticco added six points on the night.

In its previous games, North Haven had taken a 65-60 overtime loss against Amity, a 62-38 defeat to Stratford, and a 66-41 loss versus Newington.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The North Haven boys’ indoor track squad was represented by several athletes at a SCC Developmental meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 4.

Senior Cole DeCusati finished third (45-2.5) in the shot put, and junior Ethan Anderson took fifth place (44-10.5) in the event. Senior Matthew O’Connell finished third (10-0) in the pole vault, and senior Kyle Fitzgerald came in ninth place (8-6).

Sophomore Jake McCreven finished in sixth place (9.18) for the 55-meter hurdles, and junior Matthew Crispi took 10th place (9.79) in the event. North Haven’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of senior MJ DeVilliers, junior Daniel-Mark Thomas, senior Kevin Rourke, and junior Tyler Wrum finished in ninth (4:08.13).

Girls’ Indoor Track

The North Haven girls’ indoor track team sent a few athletes to compete at last week’s SCC Developmental meet on Jan. 3.

Senior Emily Cocco finished eighth in the shot put (26-9) for North Haven at the meet. Fellow senior El-Lana Coleman took 10th place in the high jump (4-2) on behalf of the Nighthawks.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 this season by earning a win versus Notre Dame-West Haven last week. On Jan. 4, the Warriors hosted the Green Knights and prevailed by the score of 101-67 at Walter Gawrych Community Pool in North Haven.

North Haven junior Christian Butler finished first in the 1-meter diving (225.60) for GNH in the victory. Senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 50 freestyle (22.62) and the 500 (5:07.31) Fellow senior Finn Henry swam his way to top honors in the 200 freestyle (1:47.84) and the 100 butterfly (57.95). Junior Aiden Cohen earned first place in the 200 individual medley (2:15.77).

GNH’s 200 medley relay of freshman Kyle Januszewski, Cohen, junior Lucas Espinosa, and junior Spencer Carroll took first place (1:58.72). The 200 freestyle relay of Carroll, Espinosa, Foster, and freshman Hugh Henry also finished in first (1:40.97).
